Great video. Also the car looks in fantastic condition. I bought a facelift cl500 3 months ago and I've restored the car to nearly as new condition. It had one owner and 60k on the clock but it needed a full respray and other work. Everything underneath had been cleaned and painted so it looks like new in, out and underneath but i had no idea it also had a problem with the abc system as it had a warning light for one of the seats saying seat not locked and I only found out about the abc problem yesterday after fixing the seat (left the seat as a last job) and to say I'm upset would be in understatement. I've plugged it in and it says unknown fault ( c1525 c1526) and it won't let me clear the fault. Inside it says active body control ABC visit workshop. The fluid level was a bit low and I've topped it up and drove the car for about 3 miles but the light is still on. It goes up and down no problem and even if it's parked for 1 week it doesn't go down. Sorry for the long post in your video, I wish I never bought the car now

Instead of Strutmaster, Coilovers, etc. just buy a Toyota. Hello? Unless you just did this, Flush out the old fluid with new fluid (8 - 10 quarts) and install new filter Right Now. I stayed on top of the fluid level for months (slow leak, front left). Couldn't understand why the light kept coming back on when the fluid was full. Eventually became the DANGER, DO NOT DRIVE, CAR TOO LOW msg. in red. Not too much later and it wouldn't raise up anymore when started, despite full fluid level. Sunk to the ground & stayed there. I couldn't fit a broom handle between the driveway & the bottom of the car. $3,600.00 estimate for local dealership to do a flush, filter & New Pump. Did the flush & filter at home (per a YT video) and Thank God, the pump works great now. Dirty hyd. fluid in ABC is SERIOUS, little did I know. It is NOT like dirty engine oil that you can get away with almost indefinitely. I hope your luck is as good or better.

The cost for the ABC isn’t nearly as costly as it used to be. 1st you can buy new shocks thru arnott for 450 each usually cost 1500 each. Tandem pump for 450 used to be 900-1200 usual service is 3k so labor will be the same. 6k you can have a brand new abc system.

Would sooner buy a coilover conversion & be done with it. Nice car tho, I'm running a CLK at the moment.
@MichaelJwolf1984
@MichaelJwolf1984 9 месяцев назад
No you wouldn’t. Prices for shocks and tandem pump have dropped significantly. The ride is way better with the ABC suspension. Coils ruin the ride and actually cost close to the same at this point due to prices dropping so drastically. New ABC set up for 6k will last you another 80k miles.

My 3rd car is gonna be CL500 but im gonna fuse this car with M120 + ZF8HP (Never gonna tune engine after swap, tuning that reliable engine with this roar is a crime) But ZF8HP is just the most economic, easy to find and smooth gearbox for cheap money able to stand 600nm for a long time. ~I was in Mercedes W140 (Sadly not S600 but 4.2 V8) The car also was very nice (Comfort in the car, place inside - big 4+) But 4 gear automatic shift gears like me trying get driving licence for the first time🥲

About to purchase a 2009 SL550 with 13k miles on it. Gonna take a turkey baster to check the hydraulic fluid color. If I buy, gonna purchase an Autel Maxisys Pro for diagnostics and Rodeo test. The hydraulic fluid should be done at least every 40k miles. You can buy a 20ltr of Pentosin CHF11-S for $260 and half it and do it yourself. Yes, the blocks and accumulators are the next phase of repairs should the previous owner NOT change out the hydraulic fluid with flush and filter.

If you keep the fluid & filter fresh, refresh the seals in the valve blocks, keep an eye on the lines/make sure nothing is leaking, & replace shocks when needed, you'll stay ahead. If you don't know how to wrench or don't have enough money to properly service these cars, or don't know how maintenance works, then yes ABC will probably ruin you. If you don't at least educate yourself on the systems, then Mercedes shouldn't be in your vocabulary.

I had a 2000 CL500 and the suspension was giving me static and left me on the side of the road one night so I replaced the whole ABC system with regular struts and springs. Ride quality wasn’t as nice as the stock ABC system but when those cars get to the point where you can buy one for less than $10,000 it doesn’t make sense to pay that much to just fix the suspension. I never ever had to worry about the system failing on long trips again. I used Strutmasters but their service dept could use a tune-up. Now you can get an adjustable-height set. Awesome car, overall.
@mguytv
@mguytv 5 лет назад
Yes, that is a sensible option - but when the ABC is working it is a great ride!
@coreyduo9961
@coreyduo9961 5 лет назад
Scott McEwen when replacing the suspension system, does the car sit up high off the ground?
@ScottMcEwen1
@ScottMcEwen1 5 лет назад
Corey Duo The front end sat a bit higher than I would have wanted but the rear was fine. Saying that, I believe that a slightly lowered suspension looks nicer in most cars. There is a conventional strut system for the CL that has a adjustable ride height but it’s not the Strutmasters kit. I believe it was a Chinese made kit but I’d be willing to bet that the Strutmasters kit is Chinese, as well. I spoke to Strutmasters just after I installed their kit and asked when an adjustable kit would be available. They said, at that time, that they’re working on it. That was 2014..so I doubt they had any intention of following through with a height-adjustable kit. I’m sure they would rather spend their time on higher demand applications.

I saw this by chance having, last year, had a similar issue. No warning lights no major issues - just a slight noise. Local garage didn't know but called on Merc main agents who diagnosed issues with the ABC pump. You know it is going to be the pump when they say "we've never known one go much under 150,000 miles. Yeah - right. It was 2 years old when I purchased it in 2012 and is the first of the Blue Efficiency/High Cost models. New price was a shade over £100,000. 2nd hand and with 14k on the clock it was £45k. As Maserati Guy says it's a nice car. I'd go further. I had been looking at Bentleys and the CL 500 (but not the CL 63) is a way nicer car to drive. A friend I see every Christmas when I go on holiday and is pretty well heeled thinks much the same. Out of the 6 Bentleys and 2 MB CL 500s and CL55 he has owned the Mercedes leads the pack. Apart from checking fluid etc one of the pieces of advice I had was not to let it stand for months without driving it, so I don't. Just as a bit of a funny story, I bought this car from Mercedes Guildford. I knew how much it should be and they had reduced it by £5k. I had a picture of the guy I had been talking to (as about 55-60 and died in the wool slightly better than most other car salesmen). When I met him he turned out to be 23, just having finished a degree in business studies and his first day in used car sales. He was utterly charming and engaging. I asked him to price my car, mentally agreed the price and asked him how much deposit he wanted. He practically fell over the desk. "You going to buy it?" Yes. "What this one?" Yep. "What - now?" The CL was the first car more or less he had sold. He looked after me until he discovered how nice Sydney was on a holiday and a city from which he's never returned. I no longer go back to MB Guildford. I think they've lost the plot and sadly they've lost him. It's people who make a business. People buy cars in the UK but after Brexit they may have to rely on people again.

After all the expense, time & trouble, and 2 videos . . . He doesn't have a clue what the recommended service interval is. I'm flabbergasted! Nice guy, well intended, but poster child for the addage, "DON'T LOSE THE LESSON!" FYI 60k, 40k & 20k miles are recommendations I've heard on various YT videos. Lastly, he's absolutely right about not ignoring warnings & maintaining the proper fluid level. The other absolute is keep that fluid & filter fresh & clean. Its also the first thing to do at any sign of ABC trouble or warning: Flush w/new fluid & put in a new filter. Amazingly, a lot of problems are resolved by this alone, not to mention preventing further issues, worse problems & and an even more costly repair expense. Ask me how I know? You guessed it, I learned it the hard way.

What about replacing those hydraulic hoses that burst? Also, if the fluid gets low there must be a leak, so it's pointless just topping it up without further investigation. Sounds like a lot of money was spent for not a lot of return. If you're not going to do a lot of this work yourself, ie be an enthusiast, prepare to be skinned alive by whoever you pay to do it. I think they are a magnificent vehicle and have seen one I'd like to buy, but I would be doing everything done in this video myself, as that's part of the satisfaction of owning one and knowing exactly what state it's in.

Sounds like the transmission output speed sensor is bad, it's giving a reading which doesn't match what the wheel sensors are measuring, and the ECU/TCU is therefore putting the car in limp mode to avoid any possible damage. Hopefully it can be replaced without too much hassle.

@@jimmyj4395 I'm sorry! Idk if that reset has more to do with acceleration than transmission, or if it's all about the same thing. It's an automatic transmission in an engine that won't rev high enough to cause the gear to shift when you accelerate. So I think it's both / same thing. I have a new accelerator pedal but never put it on because it doesn't do it very frequently. The guy I bought it from got the new pedal for me, said it would fix the limp. On flat ground, I don't think mine would accelerate to more than ~30 mph, and would slow to a crawl, maybe 5 mph, trying to make it to the top of the overpass. Just barely made it. Are those your symptoms too?
