Thank you for doing this. As a MacDonald, I am ALWAYS pleased to see us get ANY recognition that is not centered on the Golden Arches. A couple of points - Member of the Clan refer to it as Clan Donald. Most Scottish Clans use the whole family name (e.g Clam MacMillan,) Clan Donald is different . The family name is MacDonald (McDonald, Donnelly, Connolly, etc, etc) but the Clan name is Donald. Godfrey's title may be Baron, but in this context, he is known as Lord MacDonald, Chief of the Name and Arms of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald. He is referred to as High Chief because there are four other Chiefs within Clan Donald: Macdonald of Sleat Captain and Chief of Clanranald Chief of Glengarry Chief of Antrim

Has your family done any ancestry research? My great great grandmother was one Johanna Mary MacDonald (born in Scotland but not known where exactly) who likely entered America through Castle Garden when they immigrated to the United States in 1864, lived in New York for a time before marrying my Norwegian great great grandfather, and then moved to San Francisco. My aunt had a friend who was a genealogist who did an amazing amount of research for her. However the only clue left before he died (he was really old when he did this book) was to include the family name history of the Clan MacDonald and the battle of Glencoe. I have been doing ancestry research since 2012 so this will be exciting to trace and see where she connects.

A video I can relate to. Funnily enough, my dad’s grandparents were from Irish ‘McDonalds’ , but I was able to trace a female Maclean on that side all the way back to Princess Margaret of Scotland, so apparently the two versions converge. Fascinating! Also the Clan would just be Donald, The old meaning behind the spelling of MacDonald is Son of Donald, as in a Son of the Founding Father (Domnhall/Donald). EDIT: It’s why we capitalize the D in MacDonald.

There’s an argument to be made that the Glencoe Massacre shouldn’t be included in the feud between the Campbells & MacDonalds- because it was orchestrated by the Lowland Dalrymple clan, & the government- a Campbell actually gave the fleeing MacDonalds shelter, but the former were able to use the old antipathy toward the Campbells to direct attention away from them... guess it worked, because that’s the perception we have after all this time- hell, it even worked at the time. @OcarinaSapphr-
@OcarinaSapphr- 4 года назад
Juan Ferreira I’ve also done some research on it- it was more of a slow-burn than I expected- most of the feuds were more like guerrilla warfare, & hit-&-run tactics - very few were ‘wars’ in the sense of pitched battles & stuff; there were dozens of feuds over the centuries, but because most were situated entirely in the Highlands- unless they generated Crown (&/ or English) intervention, they were not regarded as especially important. Three big ones that involved my MacDonald ancestors; against the Campbells, as already stated - against the Clan MacGregor; made somewhat famous by Rob Roy & a movie, that made a petty cattle thief out to be a hero- the MacGregor clan *invented* the term ‘blackmail’: it came from the ‘black meal’ ‘payments’ they extorted from people, to ensure their cattle wouldn’t be stolen. Retributive cattle stealing was practically a way of life- I’m not lumping it all on them, or anything. The MacGregors didn’t have the same kind of heritage the Highlander ‘royalty’ MacDonalds had- & they never openly faced them. The third big feud was against Clan MacLeod- unlike the MacGregors, the MacLeods were warriors with a substantial heritage of their own- & this would be one of the few examples of open clan warfare; more people died in one of their battles than at Glencoe- in fact, it had the highest death total of any of the feuds. And it was this feud that may have inspired _that_ Monty Python scene. They buried their differences under royal command, when James VI acceded to the English throne.

I have ancestors in the Donald of Clanranald branch as well as Clan Currie which are a sept of them ( some are also a sept of Clan MacPherson ). I also have Stewart, MacLaine and ironically Campell ancestors. And way back a few early Scottish kings. Not really surprising as a Swede, many of my ancestors where Danish, Norwiegian vikings ( including Fairhair, Bluetooth, Forkbeard , Ironside etc ), contact with Scotland eventually leading to the gall gael. All this on my maternal side. Geneology on the paternal side would be harder unfortunately. Ivar the boneless is also among my ancestors ( whether or not he was the same as Imar ).

My Grandmother told me, "I'm a Donald, not a bloody McDonald!" The other curious thing. When I was a lad, about 7 years old I had been to the Pictures & sae Rob Roy. I told my grandmother, who loved me. She took a broom & belted me around the Kitchen. I went to see her brother, my uncle who would tell me about all the things that the Donald's were famous for. He chased me out of his house & never to come there again. I, then, went to see grandma's sister, bawling my eyes out. I told her all that had happened & she grabbed me & shhhhed me. Then pointed to Grandma's other brother sleeping on the veranda. She whispered in my ear, “Ah, laddie, there are somethings, in this family, we never talk about." I never did find out what it was. My grandma & her uncle always treated me badly after that. A bit more history. The French beat the English at the Battle of Orleans. Well, not exactly. Apparently the Doufant didn't trust his own Army & he hired two Regiments of Donald's to be his personal Body Guard. It is with these that St. Joan of Arc, beat the English at Orleans.

First, the fast food chain McDonald's is spelled without the first A (though I often see people misspell it "MacDonalds" on the internet). Second, the McDonald brothers, for whom the chain is named, were primarily of Irish descent, not Scottish (their parents were both Irish immigrants who came to America with their families as children). I saw something today saying that today was the 80th anniversary of the McDonald brothers opening their first business; did you time the upload or is it just coincidence?

The heir to the House Macalister Branch is rumored to be a master tactician in the art of defensive warfare. He is known as the "Bane of the Bandits" and his last known location was somewhere in rural Illinois just outside of the city of Chicago. Also one member of the house of MacDonald survived the dreaded Glencoe massacre, today he is rarely seen (if not only in effigy at the many houses of MacDonald) his appearance is well known, dressed in gold, his face painted in the colors of war. This last of the MacDonalds to this day wages an unceasing war against the one known as "the King" and his name... is Ronald.
