during the war, my family sought shelter in the Holloway road underground station, Piccadilly line. People were sleeping on the stairs, the tunnels and on the platforms. fold up bunkbeds were attached to the walls an upper and a lower. most of the platform was crowded with family groups and they came prepared with bedding and camping stoves. people were sleeping between the rails. their was a party atmosphere with people singing and accompanied by mouth organs und other instruments. it was jammed park. poor people who had to work the following day.

Unbelievable, there are whole cities undergound. There must be official maps of these underworlds, otherwise they would collide with new subway tunnels or canals. How many are still unknown to us, how many are known just by officials? Thanks for this interesting tour and regards from Germany/Bremen.

Love the idea of abandoned tunnels that still have power, the odd light on a control board and a few fluorescents still working ...

Back in the 80s I worked for a maintenance company that worked for a company called security archives , they rented tunnels in the deep level shelters. once at Clapham south the sump pumps stopped working and divers from the MOD came to in fix them.

This entire vid feels like the start of a paranormal horror film

Fascinating stuff. All I can think is if they were capable of building such deep structures in the 30's/40's, imagine the underground set ups the government could have now.

It's so unbelieveable that someone designed the whole installation and then people build this... under the earth! Crazy!

I worked in tunnelling in London from 1960 onwards on the first was an enlargement of an exist BR tunnel at Chalk Farm that was going to be electrified and needed more head room. After that it was the repair of the Northern Outfall sewer carrying bridge at West Ham. Followed by working on 3 sections of the Victoria Line. Then on the Severn Wye cable tunnel and lots of smaller jobs around the country and one under the Suez Canal. I then joined the tunnelling department of a large Consultant Engineering company for a project in Cairo, the start date was delayed so I was given the job on inspecting those deep shelters this was 1984. The 1st one I looked at was in the West End and was used by the US Military, Eisenhower even had a bunk room there. One of the S London shelter was being used by a film crew for a spooky music video. This was a smaller station if I remember correctly. The accessed in the middle of a roundabout, maybe the one you were, had a working lift and operational phone. Workers were sealing some leaking joints in the shaft CI segments and also moving supplies in, I was going up and down in the lift while they did this as I needed to make several call about my next appointment. Another site still had steel bunk beds in and was being used to store documents for a security company. It was all very interesting but I wanted to move on and the sun shine of Egypt.

Amazing how deep they were. London's an amazing city. I saw a history channel documentary about deep tunnels in London during war 2 that were for Churchill and top wartime leaders to escape and they kept secrets about that under wraps. To think this is all British engineering in war time. Truly amazing.

I was totally fascinated by the vastness of the tunnel system under London. I cannot imagine the amount of work that was put in to building this. It's incredible how people can come together during war time effort to safeguard its citizens. Subscribed!

Great work. I have always wanted to go down one of these, I used to live in Wandsworth and passed the Clapham shaft most days. There is a hidden shelter in Wandsworth itself, covered years back when I was at school. It's still there untouched. Get in touch if you want s heads up. Best wishes, Paul

Its almost as if we will never know what really happened during WW2

With lack of space and also homelessness etc it’s a wonder these underground space haven’t been used. Especially considering it’s lasted longer than most rubbish built today lol.

The amount of time, effort and amazing engineering that went into building this structure seems so great and for it to lie abandoned and rusting just seems like such a waste!!! Cheers

9:58 shows what appears to be a double staircase (i.e. double helix). I know of the base at cliffs of dover, they had similar as the top brass would use one set and the grunts the other set of stairs. Didn't want the 2 classes mixing.

Remember my late father telling how he slept on bunks in the tunnels below London in the 1950's, when he was either waiting to go or after he returned from serving with the Welsh guards in Egypt. Wish he was still around to see this video.

I think the reason they ventilate (still) is because it's key that the area remain structurally sound since the metro is so close. Those tunnels would eventually degrade and pose a risk. There's no other sound reason, just a pencil pusher somewhere did the math based on a report and said "yeah, it would be cheaper to just ventilate than do anything else".

i have passed this many times, and knew that it was a deep service tunnel for the underground. but never thought that it would be so extensive, or, that it was used for homeless immigrants. they kept that one quiet. with the way things are going recently, it could end up back in use for young people, unable to afford, to keep a roof over their heads, people who were born here, and don't want to emigrate

There was a pub 20 yards away from the shelter in Stockwell not by the station , towards Clapham direction and a bomb dropped killing all the occupants that chose to stay there in the pub . Hidden on the floor is a remembrance plaque just by the cafe . South London was heavily bombed . These shelters are at Clapham South , Clapham Common , Clapham North and 2 in Stockwell 😇✊🏻🙏🙏🙏

Att 43.28. It makes you wonder how far down they are and who fitted the stepladder and rings to the hatch and who installed the air intake fan thing. Who friggin dug it all out in the first place. Someone must know. And further you dig, the harder to get the excess out Like p.o.w's diggin an escape tunnel

21:53 note how the stairs are deep, yet short (H). Engineered that if you fall by way of slipping, you have enough surface area to stop quickly.

Saw this place when Simon Subex first posted. Amazing place with so much history and parts being utilized today to support the city infrastructure above. I bet that whole place vibrates at times, with the trains, traffic, and people above. I bet that sump well goes very deep to absorb flooding from nearby water sources. Just have to switch on those pumps, someone must have tried with those hoses and small pumps.

A great explore, thanks for dragging us along. One wonders when they were dug and who predicted their needs.

Looks very much like the shelter used for filming in the 1977 Doctor Who story, 'The Sun Makers'.

Interesting to see the combination of very old, somewhat old, been there a little while, a tad new things running threw that place. The place may not be in service, but it is being inspected from time to time.

I used to work at Clapham South Deep Level Shelter (as well as Down Street Underground Station) for TFL Museum’s Hidden London tours. It’s a very different world down there!

I'm loving how there are thick power cables running through shallow water ... insert Simba saying "I laugh in the face of danger hahah" And when that cover was moved and there was clearly a whole other level going down completely full of water 😮😮 it's just so cool and a nightmare at the same time ... thinking of accidentally falling into it, panicking and ... no I can't finish the thought!

It’s scary to think about why they were built but would be cool to explore if there were anything like that where I live. There is some in the US but none that’s accessible here in the south Eastern United States.

Blows my mind these tunnels all over the world we're built so well and constructed under so many different circumstances, doesn't seem possible with info we are given .

As featured on "Blake's 7" if I remember correctly - This place always reminds me of the BBC Sci-Fi programmes. Some of that electrical gear down there isn't as old as you might think - some, no older than the 1990s. While you were there, did you fellows find the remains of the dead cat? Apparently lost and starved to death in the darkness. Also, did you find the old 'tyre-less' bicycles? There were two, at one time, devoid of tyres and decidedly dodgy to ride on! I think these tunnels might still be listed as Government assets, and as such, their future reuse would always be under review - Granted, it could be a long time between reviews!

Would be so cool to turn it into cool apartments.

They should sell them. Perfect location for a datacenter, since you can cool the air easily with heat pumps.

Where does one even begin to build something like this??? Did they build and dig as they went down? If they built upward how did they get all the metal and lift mechanics How do you even dig a hole that deep in the first place? And those staircases?

Well this is amazing, me and my girlfriend have been to London a few times and we are allways taken back by the amazing history, didnt realise this was all there, we love the underground aswell, great content IKS , stay safe

Hey guys, check out growing underground! They're using one of these tunnels to grow hydroponic microherbs in clapham common. Very good idea to use these kind of spaces!

It's such a warren of tunnels it would be easy to get lost there. I marvel that there was manpower, equipment and materials available during the war to build these.

A truly brilliant video amazing never ever thought that any thing like this existed. I'd been on the underground many times when I used to visit my grandparents in shepherds Bush but never thought there was anything like this truly great boy's well done

i have been lucky enough to have seen a lot of the bits that the public cant get to ,,i worked for Balfour Beatty on London underground and we were in the substations that go with each station , we knocked through a wall at embankment station and it went into a huge void that must have gone lower than the river level outside id love to have spent more time exploring all the tunnels we found behind walls and under stations

Amazing the tunnels completed in 2 years.

The 10 to 10 markers can serve multiple purposes, i have doubts it being a construction aid, i think it's a logistics marker. For example, persons from A to F stay in section 60 to 70, F to J in section 70 to 80 and so on. Note that the smaller section prefabs are in these areas, technically speaking those are the more resilient of the two types you've seen, the larger being more rigid and unyielding.

2:40 This staircase gives you the tube station feels. Also arguably 1 of the bet bits in there. The white membrane in the tunnel ceiling section is new.
