Ralph Emery "Pop Goes the Country" show Webb Family all together around mother Clara Webb Butcher interview and singing. Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Peggy-Sue Wright, Jay-Lee Webb
I've always been impressed at the fact that Loretta Lynn and her family came from such abject poverty in the hills of Kentucky and had little education, but still carried themselves with a sense of pride, grace, and decency.
Depends on what you call poverty. I call a house full of love and singing wealthy, and no amount of money can purchase the love that grows from the struggles of poverty where the smallest things bring the greatest joy.
There are a ton of rich scumbags. They just know how to pretend like they aren't scumbags. Mountain people in those days were very proud and Loretta's mother was an exceptional woman who raised good kids.
tea pea I know, she had an extremely troubled marriage with Mooney and the movie sugarcoated it making you think at the end their marriage was healed after she returned to the stage after a nervous breakdown and spending months of isolation at her ranch.
tea pea There's a story Loretta told about appearing with Dean Martin. She was supposed to sit on his lap. She said her mom told her to never sit on any man's lap and she never saw her mom sit on her dad's lap. She refused and they had to re-write that part of the show.
tea pea Loretta said on several occasions, the marriage was abusive. They stayed together out of love. She said his cheating hurt. As far as him hitting her, she says "He never hit me once, that I didn't hit him back twice. I could whoop him, and he knew it!".
Jay Lee Webb was a wonderful and kind man. My father was a musician and we knew him well. Clara was very kind as well, true lady indeed. Thank you for the videos, so nice to see and hear them again.
I owe it to Mooney for Loretta getting where she was. He may have been an SOB at times, but got her out of her shell to sing to the public and fulfill her potential.
Weeb butcher family has came along way baby their as beautiful today as they we're way back when beautiful Loretta Lynn she's Amazing Lady And so Truly Beautiful!!
Ps..Loretta's son Ernest..very very good looking guy, even now. I watched the Loretta''s Lynn bio/ documentary STILL A MOUNTAIN GIRL (3 TIMES...SO FAR..LOVE IT) and what one heck of a great looking family. Peggy and Patsy are gorgeous..and such a nice humble family..Xx..-Kirk
Precious! She reminds me so much of my sweet beloved Granny from the hills and hollers of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of upper East Tennessee. They do not make ladies of such grace, dignity and true grit anymore.
+Denise Hunt- Most southern whites (@ that time) were mixed w/ Cherokee! Including myself! Love this family..Crystal's idea for the reunion! Both Loretta & Crystal have star charisma...meant to be!
For those saying Clara's last name is Webb, she married Tommy Butcher after the death of Ted Webb. Her name was Clara Marie Ramey Webb Butcher. There were two main families, the Butchers and the Webbs. There were more Butchers than Webbs, hence the name Butcher Hollow (or as mountain folk say, Butcher Holler).
Such an amazing Family!!Every one in Loretta's family is talented. Her brother Herman still has a strong amazing voice. Thanks for sharing this with us.I really enjoyed it.
Amazing! Thank jesus for our mamaz! All the boys look like Dad nd the girls look all over their moms! Awesome 8 kids nd Dad managed to do everything he cud for his wife nd family!
He didn't do it alone ---- his wife worked real.hard too , even if she didn't get paid a wage . I read Loretta's book years ago ---- they had a. Hard , poverty filled life , her parents loved them all.
Thanks Charles, brings back some great memories of Clara such a sweetheart and my famous sweetheart Brenda. Sweet smiles, gentle voice and loving hearts. Jay Lee and Peggy Sue sure do miss you. Thanks for the kiss on the cheek Miss Loretta. HA>
I've always loved Loretta's singing. I grew up with all the good old country songs. My mom and daddy listen to all the greats. And I learned to love them as well.My daddy was a Ramey. I know we have some connection to Loretta's mama Clara. I've been working on our family tree for sometime now. But I've come to a stand still. If anyone out there knows anything about Loretta's mother. Please let me know. I surely would appreciate it. Thanks.
I vaguely lknew couple ppl.in MO. With that name , one " Laura " l went to SB buisness College with , and NOT very nice person .And there is --- or was l believe a small Grocery store chain by that name too---- here in MO. And maybe other states ??? Does anyone know of it ???😉
Lynn was Loretta's married name. Her maiden name was Webb. And Crystal Gayle is a stage name she took. Her birth name is Brenda Gail Webb. I've been a huge fan of both Loretta and Crystal every since I can remember!
Amazing to find this on RU-vid stuff like this would be lost to history if it wasn't for RU-vid. Lot of TV studios shredded their old shows once they aired after number of years. NBC destroyed many of the Tonight shows with Carson prior to 1972 only 33 episodes exist from 1962 to 1972.
the baby that Peggy Sue Holds in the beginning of the movie it Betty Ruth, seventh child of Clara and melvin Webb, the info was revealed by Loretta or Peggy herself in an interview.
very simple... Crystal Gayle is Loretta Lynn little sister. Loretta married to mr lynn most commonly known under nickname "Doolittle" or "Doo". Loretta and Crystal were Webb sisters from Ted & Clara Webb. Crystal Gayle married to Bill Gatzimos, and Crystal Gayle is her stage name which Loretta found for her, made from Krystal hamburger chain (or because she was bright and shine like Crystal) and her middle name "Gail". Her Real name was originally Brenda Webb.
Crystal did not take into the backwoods mentality like Loretta, since she lived almost all her childhood in the Midwest. I still keep forgetting they're sisters and full at that!
Mrs. Butcher was very down to earth and unimpressed with the finer things in life. In fact, Loretta bought her mom house back in Wabash, IN, but Mrs. Butcher refused to accept it. But I don't know what happened to the house...maybe it was sold or another family member moved in.
richer enouff I didn't know much about Clara's life before recently. In the Coal Miner's Daughter movie, she was still living in the family home when Ted died, but as I read she lived in Indiana not long after Loretta married. She's obviously a tough personality on this video; I suppose Loretta's sentimental ways were more inherited from her father
Seen a documentary of their house in Butcher Holler , with a few other houses around it . It was Nice grassy area all around . I loved seeing inside house , with things still set up ----; furniture , kitchen, antiques ---; which l just love , and it has an upstairs too !!!l hope it's still there , ld love to see it some day . 🏠🌻
And the recording company Decca, which already had Brenda Lee, didn't want any confusion when they signed her for the first time, so they asked her to change her name...
most probably 1976 according to copyright info displays at 3:53 end of the video. She also wears that same dress than on the 1976 "Crystal" album cover!
Anyone who has seen Coal Miner's Daughter...the movie...will remember when this song was sang while putting the kids to bed in bump beds. The little boy who sat up and said "bullshit" was little Ernie Lynn...the young man in this video.
according to Loretta's book "coal miner's daughter" they didn't even had a washing machine. Crystal Gayle (Brenda) didn't appear in the movie, she wasn't even born. The baby rocked there was so Betty Ruth.
Chrystal.would of been born by then ,shes 70 something now , and yes she is in that book ---- her real name ' Brenda' ... She looks do pretty in this video !!!
What a beautiful family! WHERE'S HERMAN? Ha Ha!!!! I have a brother named herman too & my mama grew up in wallin's creek over by butcher holler. It's beautiful there & I miss it! I think most Herman's come from there! LOL
the Host asked clara Butcher waht was the name of th town where she leared the song I did not understand the namke of the town Psease post the name of that town.
I am a bit confused, maybe someone can help? I noticed Clara, the Webb children's Mama went by the name, Clara Webb Butcher. Did perhaps after Mr. Webb passed away Clara might have eventually remarried one of the Butcher Men? I mean the area is known as Butcher Holler so I'm assuming there was a Family there that the area was named for and perhaps she married one of the descendants? Just curious.
Yes, she married Tommy Butcher after death of her first husband, after moving In Wabbash Indiana, so probably not much to see with Butcher Holler name ? (Unless Tommy Butcher when from Butcher Holler as well) Tommy Butcher was a relative (cousin I think) of her first husband Melvin (Ted) Webb, as far as i remember
terri5757 They moved to Wabash Indiana when Crystal was 4 years old. Crystals dad passed away 4 years later. I'm not sure if Crystals mom ever remarried.
she remarried with a cousin of her dead husband, mr Butcher as mentioned in my previous reply, please read it. Tommy Butcher has been Crystal's stepfather then.
In the movie, Clara was still living at the old homestead when her husband died, but in reality, they already lived in Indiana and the challenges of city life for a shy country boy and a flood killed him.
Eileen- it wouldn't have been Crystal she was rocking in the movie. Loretta got married at 15 and left home which would have been 1947 and Crystal wasn't born until 1951
Actually l think she married at 13 or 14 which is way too young ....lm amazed her parents allowed that .........and Doo was so mean and abusive to her !!!
mrlafayette1964 Because Crystal is Loretta's sister...not her daughter....Their maiden names were Webb....Crystal's real name is Brenda Gail Webb...Crystal Gail is her stage name....
Or do you mean Alex Amaretto? When I heard that he had another daughter, who was born in Sydney, Australia...it never really surprised me much...he was a man whore...LOL!!!
***** Calm down there tiger...I don't have to get anything straight...I never said anything other than he was a man whore back in the day...no disrespect to Earnest Ray, just a sly joke about a man who jokes about himself being a ladies man back in the day.
this was in the movie, with loretta rocking her baby sister while doing laundry on the porch, at least I think she was rocking little crystal gayle, and kicking the washing machine to keep it going. not sure but almost sure.
