which region? east asia is fine with crowded area that close to lot of sites aka convenient. and southeast asia too.. but they still need infrastructure western style is boring. grid and large area of houses n roads. it's because they're too focus on the cars. but now they embrace the ecofriendly stuff. probably they gonna look at japan how to manage public transportation. with lot of trains and pedestrian streets. and actually we need citybuilding games that not just focused on the western style. we need a street n road where it's just for pedestrian, bicycle, pedicab, and some vehicles that slow. just like in asia. the road itself also need to have more variation tho.. people in asia tend to have road without the pedestrian way. it's great to create some kind of slum area or overcrowded area in your gameplay tho.. citybuilding game have lot of space for improvements. for now they still focused on the western style of building city. not yet the middle east style where you dont have a big bodies of water and the roof because the rain is so rare in there, or the southeast asian style where it's rain a lot so lot of erosion and moss and puddles there, or the east asian style where it's modern amazing future city thing like in every future game/movie setting. if EA want to revive the simcity franchise, first, they need to make the basic like cities skylines. like the simcity 4. you can make a huge city. with agriculture and export-import stuff. and the second is, expand the possibilities. dont too focused on the western style of building city.
It's not just eco-friendly building but finance-friendly building. Bulldozing a block of run down businesses with a taxable value of 1.1 million and replacing it with a shiny new taco joint sounds great until you realise it only has 60% of the taxable value of the block of old businesses, and uses all the same infrastructure. Less income + the same or greater expenses isn't a good thing, and any businessperson will tell you that.
Streetcar suburbs are also the best places to ride your bike because the grade is usually gentle, cars drive slower, and the tree cover is perfect for sun or rain
I think it'd be great if you made the Cabrillo Fire Department a thing. Like if you made each fire station really fit into its neighborhood instead of just seeing it as plopping another service. I think there's an interesting discussion to be had about how everyone wants a fire station nearby but not so close that the sirens start bothering you and what not. I'd take a look at the South Metro Fire Rescue youtube channel to get into how each station can have some kind of personality
Loving this series. The building methods and story telling is giving me infrastructurist vibes. You should add some places of worship to your neighborhoods. Especially in old neighborhoods, they’re everywhere.
This is one of my favorite CS youtube series. These suburbs also remind me a lot of mid city in new orleans along canal street and the sunset in san francisco along judah and taraval which is what always comes to mind when i think of streetcar suburbs.
Wow, this was my favourite episode. This zoning approach is perfect for fast expansion and I am excited to see what's next. I'd love to see a 'densified' shopping mall; I.e. one with a transit hub and nearby residential instead of the suburban island surrounded by a sea of parking.
Nice! Be cool if the city reintroduced a street car to one of these roads. H Street Corridor in DC is a good example of a city returning to this type of infrastructure.
hey Pres, amazing town, I love it! Just a thought from the other point of view, I grew up in a medium-sized city in Europe and my family never had a car: Honestly I think that cars should have their room in a city too. In my city in Switzerland you can clearly see the ideology being so radical against cars that they (even though the city is growing) try to make streets even smaller, causing a ton of standing, idling cars everywhere. The public transit system is great, you can‘t improve it a lot, but still there is a high demand for cars, for whatever reason. Not everybody wants or can use public transit to go to work and I think in a modern and free society you should still have a choice. So instead of taking away space from each other I consider the best strategy (without any professional knowledge about city planning) to separate the different means of transport as much as possible. For example, use parallel streets to the main arterial road for bicycles only instead of just painting bicycle lanes. Or build big parking garages at major train/subway stations outside the center with good freeway connections. I think it‘s okay to have a few very busy, wide arterials where traffic can flow with high speeds to keep the cars out of nice walkable, pedestrian only city centers. See, I don't want to remove the choice to have a car. Rather, I want to give people the choice *not to,* which only exists in the densest parts of the most populated cities in the US.
@Julian Rohner you have to understand Pres is a white suburban kid from california, he doesn't know owning a car is something the vast majority of the people dream of in other places of the world. He also doesn't know how uncomfortable, crowded and unhealthy public transportation can be. He just thinks motorized transportation is the devil and everyone should either use public transit or bicycles, which of course doesn't work in the real world, for real people with real needs. I'm hoping he will eventually understand ALL modes of transportation are useful and necessary and incorporate that into the cities he builds.
There's a suburb in my city called Claremont, which is somewhat similar to your Claremont. Since it's about halfway between the city and the port, a fairly dense community grew around the train station (late 19th century). It's also quite walkable, like your Claremont. I'd like to live in your Claremont as well; it's the perfect density for me.
I live in Oakland and it makes me so happy to see these beautiful victories displayed. also, streetcar suburbs are pretty good I can bike to every single one of my friend's houses in 20 min usually more like 15 min. it could be a bit denser but I do love my area.
Check out the Strip District Terminal in Pittsburgh. They remodeled this super old terminal that takes up multiple blocks into a bunch of different bougie boutiques. Kinda hit and miss with the local people.. but it's nestled in this old pittsburgh area close to downtown with old factories and produce warehouses. There's also new 2020-looking 4 story apartments and townhouses. Kinda of a, imo, cool clash of times. I think that'd be kinda cool to incorporate something like that..
I would recommend checking out Montreal for the more inner city areas. Especially the Plateau, Mile End, and Sud-Ouest neighbourhoods are truly the best walkable and lively inner-city neighbourhoods. I could imagine those types of neighbourhoods fitting in nicely just outside the CBD or adjacent to this suburb but closer to downtown.

I can't wait to see how Cabrillo grows/evolves! if I've missed your comments on this topic in a previous video, please disregard (!), but...since all your cities have major universities/university districts, a few possibilities came to mind, some I haven't seen before in CS: - super-compact urban campuses, like GGU/UC Hastings law schools in SF; only a couple city blocks, max, interspersed with mixed-use/civic buildings, like courts (by Hastings) or offices (South of Market/around GGU) - a sorta "decentralized" university, like the multiple campuses of UCSF -- maybe one of those hilltops west/across the river from downtown could host something like UCSF's Twin Peaks complex? - or even an out-and-out university district with its own presence in part of the skyline, something like the Oakland/Squirrel Hill neighborhoods in Pittsburgh (with Carnegie Mellon/U. Pitt) could be a basis for the scale/planning, if not the architectural style(s)? if you're eager to keep inspirations firmly west coast/N. Cal, the University of San Francisco campus is stunning, but seems often overlooked. regardless, keep up the fantastic work, Pres!

11:30 there is a mod that helps to align those zoning grids so that they aren't in weird shapes too much. I can't remember the name but there is :D Also some children's parks would be great in suburbs, like some slides and swinging sets and benches around.
I watch NotJustBikes too. I like when he talks about why the great suburban experiment is unsustainable and how this way of building things affected American society and way-of-life.

a little over a month ago i visited my sister who lives in redwood city- it looks a lot like this, higher development on the main avenue and single family homes. it’s so much better than cul de sac suburbs i wish i lived there 😩😩 great place to bike too
Just to add to history, can you build the train station in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Most of this town (which is birthplace of Neil Armstrong) is former Streetcar district, and the train station was a common meeting place. Maybe for when Cabrillo was still a region instead of one giant city?
Love the series so far! It would be so cool if you built a soccer stadium in a more rough or industrial neighborhood that has brought business, tourists, and money to an otherwise forgotten part of town. I feel like that is super common with new stadium builds in the US and especially with the MLS (the Philadelphia Union's stadium in the south suburbs of Philly or DC United's new stadium in Buzzard Point, DC are great examples).
Some really good examples of streetcar suburbs are a lot of the outer lying residential neighborhoods in Toronto, Ontario. They have very pedestrian friendly layouts with dense commercial thoroughfares like College street, Dundas, Queen, Gerrard, and St. Clair, which all have a streetcars connecting these streets with the rest of the city. The pedestrian or cyclist become far more advantageous and important than the car. If you plan on continuing these sorts of things in Cabrillo i would suggest taking some inspiration from there. Obviously southern Ontario isn't the west coast but in terms of layout it could give you some great insight! Just a suggestion, cheers.
Hi I’m from Richmond Ca and I love your videos and how you explain history and how things in the world all come together as a whole and I would love for you to build a community like Richmond capture how we are not only surrounded by water but that we also are surrounded by train tracks and it’s a hard place to grow up but once again love the videos and keep up the good work
Amazing job on the build! I just visited northern California and the bay area and one town that peaked my interest was Sausalito and how the main street/downtown strip was on the water and the residential areas overlooked the main street on the cliff side. I'm sure its pricy to live there but nonetheless the layout was cool as it felt like an Italian village or something
U should build a historic golf course on the downtown side of the river with a big history and the government bought the golf course to make into office spaces and other stuff, but a petition was made to keep it there.
I know I missed your Q&A but I just wanna throw out the idea of doing a small build of Detroit durning DEMF. I live nearby and it’s literally the best festival in the world. Your my favorite detailer when it comes to this medium and I think Detroit has a pretty stellar layout that could challenge you to your liking. A mini build of Hart Plaza during Movement would please you. I would also be willing to write all original music for your videos. I’ll write music for you whether you may choose to or not. Suggestion here Parks in a city in comparison to parks outside of the city Maybe when you'll be doing the nature reserve? Also Creating public spaces Maybe with waterfront or while putting a park in a spot where buildings used to be
I thought of an Hollywood type area, since I'm not able to build my Japanese/Mediterranean-inspired city (crappy graphics card). I got the idea from gta 5 vine wood hills as well, like the movie studio's and very expensive shopping spots. A few old theaters and fast food chains. Some hotels (also a famous one where celebrates lived and some was murdered there), Casinos and huge golf course. Maybe a floating hotel as well like the Queen Mary. You gave me, a lot of neat ideas for my city:O
Love the city, and love the talk on urbanistic subjects. Maybe you can gain some control over auto zoning by working with fixed plot sizes? So all 3x4 plots are single family, 2x3 for denser building types, ect. You'd still have to make the plots yourself, but you could detemine what goes where and how much space there is between the buildings..
I commented this on a previous video but I still think you should put in a college town in the middle of the city before it gets too built up. Similar to Madison wisconsin. Where the city rises above the college that’s in the middle of it with some areas of the campus disconnected; almost like islands all across downtown. Different themes with each area to represent different areas built at different times.
Kinda along the lines of not providing services I think it would be really cool if you did a massive hospital university complex in the hills kinda like OHSU in Portland and feature the sky lift that goes to the hospital.
As you asked for suggestions, would you consider doing a park or trail that's built on an abandoned/removed railway line? Not sure how common those are in the US, but here in the UK they're fairly widespread, usually being old freight lines, but occasionally passenger routes that didn't come to fruition or became unprofitable. Maybe you could apply these in alongside something like a former industrial area that's being converted into new developments, or a fringe streetcar line through a once sparsely developed area? Anyway, I've been enjoying your series so far, your observations on city planning and infrastructure are quite engaging and I look forwards to seeing where you take this city next
I think it would be a cool idea if you put a soccer/football(if you life anywhere but the USA or Canada) specific stadium because it is a huge sport in this region of the USA it’s also a growing sport and you don’t really need that big of a market to sustain a team especially in the mls look at stadiums like providence park in Portland or even a bit further south dignity health sports park in LA (providence park is a much better example) (Edit). Also if it is one of the only professional sports team (along with 1 or 2 other teams i.e baseball, basketball. Or just the only pro sports team in the city) it would make it pretty realistic if it were even a USL team instead of the mls it would make sense.
This is gorgeous! Claremont reminds me a lot of the NE Broadway/NE Weidler corridor of Portland east of that fucking mall. Makes me miss Sullivan’s Gulch/Irvington.
Zoning, can we see some organic growth from a small humble town. It’s nice watching you guys flex with your creativity forces. but it’s nice to see small humble towns grow organically instead of all these Dubai plop and go cities
I get super annoyed when people say that zoning things makes you a bad CS player, screw off, not everyone has time for that. Glad you're utilizing zoning, it can be an arse to work with but I'd rather you save time and get where you want to go a bit faster, I think it looks good.
I watched that NJB video the other day, and it was really amazing. I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see a good streetcar suburb in Cabrillo. Here’s hoping for many more sanctuaries of livability.
The northwest of the US has a high native population and it might be cool to add a Native American history museum near the waterfront to promote the diversity of west coast cities.
As a European and living in walkable cities is just a matter to have mixed areas so walking is simply entertaining, there are things to watch and to do, and every neighbourhood has its personality, its special places. Having to walk through a small residential block is boring... if you have a three level building with restaurants, stores, cafes and the next building has different places.... walking is fun... but walking by a gas station or a backyard... boring
What do you think of steep streets (in terms of walkability)? Should the grid pattern still be followed? Should stairs be added even if it limits wheelchair access?
I'd love to see a downtown/gentrified sporting complex. NBA/MLB. See how the immediate areas don't match the further surrounding areas, i.e Sacramento kings new arena
I would 10/10 live here rather than being waay outside the city in an area where all the homes look the same and have cul- de sacs. Plus i'd give anything to see trains or lightrail everyday.
Everything is "big" in the United States. In Europe, planners have to work with how the districts were planned two hundred, three hundred years ago. Everything is so packed and designed for an era were cars didn't exist. The U.S. is a clean slate. There is no need to pack things so closely together in a world with cars.
My summer just started and I don't have as many obligations as I've had throughout the year. Not exactly sure how long I'll keep up with 2x weekly, but it's working for now.
You should consider doing a series similar to donoteat01’s “Franklin” series, in which you build a pioneer settlement to begin and go through the history of this settlement turning into a city. You could teach a lot of history along the way.
Since I started to watch Not Just Bikes I've come to feel like the R1 zoning it's rooted on racism and elitism. I've seen other youtubers kinda tackle on this issue too but Not Just Bikes was the one that made me open my eyes to it.
I don't get the hate for everything that isn't a pedestrian path. I mean cars have to go somewhere, and if you don't want them on local roads you need to have fast arterials to contain traffic.
i live in a downtown-adjacent neighborhood in phx. its got a freeway blasted through it abd walkabiliry is not very good. i have to walk a mile in any direction to buy anything orher than a couple overpriced corner stores
While I am also against building freeways in the middle of neighborhoods, I didn't really understand your hatred against those two parallel wide roads. Every neighborhood needs an arterial main road that connects the neighborhood to the rest of the city you know.
I would recommend reading Jeff speck’s walkable city if you haven’t already, he’s got a whole chapter on why one way roads aren’t great when they’re used as an arterial. It basically turns a street into a mini highway, and the only users who benefit from that are car drivers. It’s not good for pedestrians, who don’t want to walk across a street where the cars are going 40+ mph. It’s not good for businesses, since the only storefronts people really see are on the one way road getting home from work. And most of the time it’s just unnecessary. One of the benefits of a grid is that there are many equally valid paths to the same destination. By forcing an arterial where it doesn’t need to be, it funnels all the traffic that would usually be dispersed in the grid. Sorry if I’m not that great at explaining, but I would highly recommend walkable city if you want to read more about it.
Some level of road hierarchy makes sense, but these roads in Cabrillo really do make it somewhat more dangerous for pedestrians in the area. Regardless, there are worse examples.
