Description: "Clarence Alphonse Gagnon was a painter, draughtsman, engraver and illustrator who was born in Montreal on November 8, 1881. From 1897 to 1900, Gagnon studied drawing and painting under William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal. In 1904, Gagnon left for Paris to work in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. He was able to distinguished himself early in his career by the fine quality of his engravings. Gagnon won a gold medal at the St. Louis Exhibition in 1904 and an honourable mention at the Salon des artistes français in Paris in 1905. From 1909 to 1914, Gagnon moved between Canada, France, and Norway; always working up the sketches he had made in Quebec.
Gagnon became a member of the Royal Society of Canada and in 1910, became an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a full member in 1922. In 1923, he received the Trevor Prize of the Salmagundi Club of New York. Between 1924 and 1936, Gagnon spent time in Paris and traveled throughout Europe. It was during this period that he illustrated a number of books, including Rouquette's, Le grand silence blanc (1929) and the deluxe edition of Louis Hémon's Maria Chapdelaine (1933), a story that celebrated Canadian frontier life. Upon his return to Quebec in 1936, the Université de Montréal awarded him an honorary doctorate.
Clarence Gagnon died in Montreal on January 5, 1942. He was sixty-one years old."

I had never heard of this artist until today. I quickly fell in love with his paintings, many of which have a fairytale book quality to them although they are of real life. I love his use of bright colours and depiction of light and shadow. Very beautiful! Thank you for introducing him to me. My daughter and I have finally found an artist whose work we both love! We are already thinking of buying prints!

I am from Quebec same as Gagnon and I had never seen so much of his work at one place. The paintings from Quebec versus the ones in Europe are very different. My heart goes to the colorful houses of Quebec and our blue mountains.

Осенние пейзажи великолепны. А в зиму мастер влюблен. На снежном фоне краски домиков сияют ярче и веселее. Зима мягкая в горах. Так захотелось попасть в детство к бабушке в деревню. А морские мотивы. Пляж отдыхающие и обязательно облака. Глубина и воздушность. Прекрасное решение. Мои любимые женщины покорили нежностью лёгкостью и шармом. Мастер глубоко верующий человек. Это видно по изображению храмов. С какой теплотой и осторожностью любовью к Богу они нарисованы. Спасибо. Я попала в сказку.

Thes best and obviously great impressionist painter of Canada that nobody knows about. He is probably the greatest Canadian painter ever and easily trumps Monet ,due to his powerful knowledge of composition. The reason he is ignored is probably because he lived in Quebec. Lauren Harris had the wealth and connections to promote his group and that did not include a Quebec artist probably due to language alone. Those who have the best promotional machinery win. Artistic ability is secondary to the cocktail gossip and media machinery.
