Yeah, what Yigit said. I'm writing for clarinet, and this helps a lot. I love when Fred Ho does these things on the Bari Sax. I recommend checking out some of his playing.

After seeing your video and the video you refer as best way to learn slap-tongue, I really wonder how I managed to do it right, because I'm doing it really differently from both ways... but thanks for bringing attention to different ways of how to teach it!

Please post a video of how you do it.

Interesting, I bet your technique would work on the bassoon. Thanks! I'll try it.

this is brilliant, man. I'm trying to write a kind of beat box clarinet piece for a uni assignment and these are exactly the techniques I need to be using. My only trouble now is trying to fid out how to notate it for the player? Can anyone help?

+Richie Ryan When I write slap tongue, I use the snap-pizzicato symbol. There is another interesting sound you may like, where you play with the tongue lightly layed on the reed for a muted sound. I notate that with the stopped-Horn symbol (+) S

Richie Ryan did you ever finish writing that piece?

Does the mouthpiece's tip opening have any influence on how effective this application of faux slap tongue is? I am on the closed side of the tip spectrum.

I don't think so. Mine is an average opening. Try it on an open mouthpiece and see if you have improvement.

does slap tonguing damage the reed?
@SeanOsborn

Some people who do real slap tongue have reported some slight damage. I think it can be avoided. Faking it my way should not damage your reed.

I’m 62 and started with the Clarinet on my own 2 yrs ago. Here’s a question for anyone: The way I learned was that for each note I blow I must force air into the mouthpiece with a blast from my mouth simulating the letter “T”. OK, great, but everytime I view a practiced Clarinetist on RU-vid who produces a professional sounding passage and hitting the buttons like he’s on Ritalin I don’t see him spitting into the mouthpiece like I do in a lumbering and non-fluent manner, so, I put it to you aficionados, is that “T” bidniz just for neophytes like me or what?

I know that I'm very late to answer this question, but just in case someone else has the same question, I'll answer it anyway. There isn't anything particularly wrong with the whole "T" thing. The problem seems to be your airflow. There are a couple easy ways to fix this. 1)Focus on blowing through your Clarinet, not into it. Just trust me. It makes a huge difference. 2) tighten your embouchure(your lips). It reduces how much air is escaping out the sides of your lips and not going into the Clarinet. It's more efficient that way. 3) Sit up straight, then tighten your abs like your flexing for a magazine. What this does is when you blow out, your air flow is very very consistent. You will have a great deal more control over your Clarinet, though you will feel like your airflow is somewhat constricted.
