Well most parents don't expect their children to leave home without a word for 12 years. That must of been pretty devastating for Martha Kent. Glad the new version altered that bit of storyline. It was kind of cruel.

One of the best scenes in the entire movie. The music, the cinematography, the acting... The little touch of Ma Kent having to hug Clark a second time is like a gut-punch. Snyder even gave this scene a little nod in Man of Steel where Clark returns home. When the two hug, Clark releases himself from the hug early on, but Ma Kent holds on so he gives her a second hug. Such a motherly thing to do.

Yes indeed. I noticed the similarity when watching Justice league. Snyder did a number of respectful things to both Superman and Michael Keatons Batman with a free bars from the original themes to both of those movies as well as these scene as you pointed out, though it was no where near as powerful as I would have loved in Justice league. Diane lane should have run up and clutched onto Clark as ma Kent did in this scene to, especially after losing him for months and expecting to never see him again. But then so few actors or directors today can REALLY capture the feel, emotions and power in scenes like this people really want to see anymore.

@@user-ve5ln5le9y true I read they had originally wanted to film it in Kansas but the wheat fields had been threshed so they had to go further north to Alberta where it was still cool enough to still grow the wheat for a few more months plus Canada at that time was a well known “ tax shelter” meaning films shot there could avoid heavy tax burdens.

Someone said that showing this movie to kids 20, 30, 40 years later, they might think it's boring because not much happens; he rescues a few people and stuff. But it is very heartfelt. I agreed with you upon first viewing of Man of Steel, but not after subsequent views. Man of Steel in its own way tries for a similar-but-different gravitas to the one that Donner gave this movie, and mostly succeeds. Mind you, I'm not saying that any scene in Man of Steel equals this one; it doesn't. But Man of Steel stands on its own right as a worthy presentation of Superman.

You can feel the waves of the fields of gold canvas in the background, hugging the partly cloudy blue skies in the distance, such cinematographic perfection when it comes to details and capturing the moment. This is how movies should still be made alongside the new technology. The art should never be forgotten just for the sake of more profit.

Since it is rather popular to accuse Williams of "stealing", my hackles rise when people make unqualified statements about how something Williams wrote is some other composer's work. But what Williams wrote for Superman is Williams. He used the Copland style to give his score a communicative flavor, but Williams' music is original right down to how he uses his borrowed elements of style. It's never all that important that Williams took inspiration from some other composer's work, it's always that he made such thoughtful, powerful, and original use of the materials. I went and listened to The Soundtrack Show to hear for myself what the argument re: Copland was, and was pleasantly surprised. That guy understands Williams better than anyone else I've run into.

Sometimes it's the small things. Look at Thaxter's eyes when she looks out the window. It conveys her love of her son, and the slight smile too where she knows it's time for him to find himself. His destiny. It's a very human thing that every mother goes through letting their children go...for better or worse to find their own way. That's what this cast and crew NEVER lost sight of: The Humanity all around.

Sure, there were some nice, friendly people here and there in the city, and sure not everyone in the country is nice and neighborly, but by and large people in the country are far more neighborly and treat you like family. I remember this scene when i was just a kid and watching it.. beautiful photography, acting,music.. colors,oh my God the colors, why today movies are so dark and gridy..I love this movie, they don't make them like this any more, but they don't have to.. CGI crap that you forget the moment you step out of cinema..

This film stands out due to it's wide range of emotions and lack of dependence on effects compared to today's films.

What a poignant scene. Makes me lament the state of the movie industry today, which is focused all on special effects, one-liners, and other superficial things. There is no focus on basic human decency which in this scene is represented by the great sadness of leaving home.

@@mutalemwananshiku4098 often ruined by melodramatic hifalutin over acting and treating the audience like they can’t think for themselves. Oh that’s right, today’s audiences are so dumb down.

I know Clark had a destiny but it makes me sad and uneasy that he would leave his mother alone on the farm by herself.

Abe don't worry. He made sure that Ben Hubbard would help her out, and when he began working for Mr. White at the Daily Planet, he arranged for some of his pay to be sent to her. He never forgot her. But then good dutiful sons always look out for their mama.

I recall my next oldest brother and I watching this scene as kids at the time and just THINKING about losing our own mom at some point would make us tear up! POWER, MUSIC, WRITING & ACTING like this is what's missing from soooo many movies today!

It's a pity that this was pretty much the last we saw of Martha in the films. We know she's still alive when Clark joins the Planet (he sends half his paycheck to her), so there was plenty of room for her to appear again. While Phyllis Thaxter was semi-retired after this, she lived all the way into the 2000s (so did Glenn Ford, funnily enough).

I saw this scene first as a child and remember being touched by it, even then. It is beautifully shot. The score, cinimatography and writing are evocative of 40s and 50s films. I love this scene.

They surely don't make them like they used to.. this is truly a cinematic piece of art. I bet I watched this movie 20 times growing up in the 80's. On a side note the Ben Hubbard that Clark spoke to yesterday is not a relative of mine ... just saying ;)

This is a scene cinematography was invented for. The complete tragedy of Superman can be seen here through Geoffrey Unsworths eyes and can be heard by John Williams talent. I'm so thankful that I was born early enough to watch this movie in a big theater, when it was released the first time...

This still brings tears to my eyes. It went through my head when I said goodbye to my parents as I headed off to college, then later to California. It also sometimes ran through my head when my kids went to college, and later my daughter left home. Finally, sadly, it also ran through my head when we got my dad's cancer diagnosis. In this scene, Clark is leaving home. In my dad's case, he'll soon be going home.

Kudos to Donner for constructing a scene that is so classically heartland American in its imagery and feel. Clark and Ma Kent both exude a beautiful Midwestern dignity. And Canada does an outstanding job subbing for Kansas here.
