Exclusive: After an annus horribilis that left each of them in hospital, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond tell Sunday Times Driving about getting back on the road for their new Grand Tour.
The Twat-Virus: Symptoms include: Rambling speech, tortured metaphors, feeling of entitlement and occasionally someone else bellowing: CLARKSON! at the top of their voice when protesting your genius.
4:55 when Hammond is talking about cars being so appealing to us, he's damn right. The allure of speed, competition, technology etc etc will always be in us and always has been. "Auto racing began five minutes after the second car was built" -Henry Ford
Frankly, I thought Hammond's last comment regarding autonomous cars was one of the most intelligent statements I've yet heard on the subject. Many thanks, Hamster!
You are probably right but that will only increase interest and participation in motor sports. Also better simulators will be developed which will give people the full experience of G forces vibrations and all the other senses involved in driving which will give people an experience almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Also let's be honest the kind of cars that hammond is driving, they aren't "selling loads of them" they are selling a few to a very small customer base of very rich people who already have dozens of cars. Hammond is a bit out of touch on this. I've driven a Bhugatti Veyron round the Nurburgring in a computer game but I can safely say I'm never going to do it in real life. Not everyone has the luxury that he has and a little bit of perspective from him wouldn't go a miss but he's out of touch so of course he doesn't realise that while we would all like to drive a Lamborghini most of us will be lucky if we ever see one.
Hammond was spot on with that last statements of the video. But then he is a smart cookie, and has a passion for the subject matter, if only more people on the internet were so articulate with their arguments.
I wonder how many people in the 1920s were passionate about horses and were scoffing at the idea of cars replacing them, because really, people have been riding them for thousands of years and they're in our blood and nothing can beat the thrill of riding a horse. The fact is, times change. There may well be a future where very few people drive cars anymore. But, yeah. For as long as there are people into it, there'll be a market for it -- it'll never completely die.
@@Michael_Shoemaker Well, Hammond isn't running since his accident. He said in an interview that he is not allowed by his doctors to go running for 18 months.
The smile you get when you see your car when you wake up, that slight chill you feel run down your spine as you sit down, hands on the wheel and feel that engine spark to life, the pride you get after spending hours washing and grooming your car to perfection and admiring the shine when the sun hits it perfectly, that rush of adrenaline when we push the speeds and turns while hearing the roar of the engine and the smile you get as you look at it one last time before closing the door to your house knowing you will see it again tomorrow. That is the thrill of cars. That is that feeling that can never be outmatched by any auto-drive vehicle. That is why we love cars so much. Those feelings and memories they bring; you can never put a price tag on that.
Gonna say it now when Hammond was talking bout the driverless cars he really sounded like David Attenborough but for the motoring world.... it was great
Is it just me or is Hammond the best character ever? I think hes quite derpy and the handsome one of the bunch. The most humorous, Clarkson, derpy one, Hammond, and the nerdy dummie of the bunch was always known as James.
They are as entertaining now as Monty Python and the Beatles used to be. There is not much else out there worth watching. Even if they get too old to do all the grueling stuff I would still watch just to hear them talk. My favorite show. Thankyou Andy Wilman.
Whenever I’m feeling a bit “down”, I watch a clip or a show including 1,2 or all three of these guys and voila! I’m laughing and all is better in my world. Thanks guys!
You gotta give it to hammond, he really remains a good sport about it all even though that crash could have easily taken his life. Takes a strong person to be able to poke fun about something that nearly killed them.
What's with all these comments about James and Jeremy looking bad, geez...They look pretty much the same to me as they have for a long time, apart from James having cut his hair short, which looks fine imo. Give them a break people.
I totally agree with Jeremy's sentiments about the road and how it should be either buses or bicycles, not both. But I would like to add that on the highways, there should be semi-only lanes, at least here in the US
Jesus, Hammond...Your Wife must be at the point where she tells you if the crash doesn't kill you, she will !! Either you are a Cat...or you're pressing your luck. Yowza !
For copyright reasons they couldn't bring The Stig into the show. In fact they had a really big legal gauntlet to run the new show. You don't want to fight against the BBC
Fantastic point by Hammond. They will never be able perfect auto driving apart from on motorways in my opinion. I drive a large vehicle in a city daily. There is no way a computer can "NEGOTIATE" through peak hour traffic, no way.
Its kinda funny that they all went in hospital for completely different reasons. James went in cause he ate something dodgy, Jeremy went in cause he was cold and Richard went in cause he doesn't know that you're supposed to stop after the finish line
If every car is electric, that would make the day to day trips safer and give everyone more time and money to do fun things with cars on the track. So yeah, Richard is 100% on point. Assuming all of the money autonomous cars would save wouldn't go into pockets of a few thousand CEOs like what's been happening with most big innovations these last 50 years.
The majority of the BBC crew moved with the trio yes, however there were some who decided to remain with the BBC. It was their decision. Jeremy did say around 70% of the Top Gear crew came over, the other 30% is new people, especially people who are used to online television, promotion etc.
4:20 Hammond, you are 100% right on that! Fun Cars will not simply go away. There is something Primal that alures people to cars that are fun to drive, and it won't go away because most of the cars will be autonomous Toyotas. There is a big market for Fun Cars and the way the Capitalism Works is that if there is a demand, then there will be supply and if the demand is great enough (which it certainly is for fun cars) then there will be competition, and the competition is the best thing for a customer because companies have to make you buy what they make and not just be there like "people will buy it one way or another so why bother making it better?". Autonomous Cars will never make Drivers Cars go away. They may become less common, but they will not go away- they will evolve and be much more fun to drive then ever before :D
4:21 Funny he should say that... one of the guys who manages the automnomous driving projects at a major company (can't remember his, nor the comany's name) actually has several Porsche 911s, and he has the same mind-set as me; it's a fun thing to toy around with and to figure out how it works and if it's possible, but (his very own words:)"I will never let it get so far that the people who actually enjoy driving aren't allowed to do so anymore"
Has anyone else noticed these three are not aging well? Sadly, we're all getting older but their work load which I suspect is horrendous, has impacted on their appearance.
am i the only one that it's going to mention the rimac safety? the car went downhill spinning and hitting the ground multiple times and Hammond got out almost unharmed.
An autonomous car will be linked with other autonomous cars creating a trackless train. But there will always be a need to access remote places where an autonomous car can not go.
Won't it be great (and a boost for the motoring nation) when the BBC asks Clarkson, May and Hammond to return to presenting Top Gear ? It will be front page news all over the globe. COME ON BBC , HAVE SOME COURAGE, ACCEPT YOU'VE RUINED IT, ADMIT IT'S CRAP NOW, AND GET THE BEST TRIO BACK.
About what Clarkson said about poor people.. I have even better idea. If people are too poor to own a car, they should build camps, where they could work and live. That way they can just walk, or have their bicycles to stroll around between their job and home. They wouldn't bother normal people and we could get rid of the busses. Everyone wins and everyone is happy. 🙂👍
And thats why adverts are inheratably bad it makes people crave something they cant/afford what they dont need but forced to want its a disease on our life
