Love the note stickers on the jupiter, incredible to think of a kid learning on a legend like that. Always good stuff!

Thanks for the awesome vid! It’s pretty cool to hear these synths back to back like this, comparing not really the same sounds, but their unique sonic strengths and highlighting why a person may prefer one over the other. I hope these keep coming for years!

What I like so much on the prophet 5 is the poly-mod where the 5 OSC B chips act as an lfo for the 5 OSC A chips. If you play a chord, each note will have the lfo at a different speed since OSC B (in LFO mode) is still being tracked by the keyboard. If you try this on the jupiter-6 and put OSC 2 in low mode, key-tracking is automatically turned off, all lfo's (OSC 2) will have the same speed. The prophet 5 rev 1-2 sound phenomenal, but even the rev 3 in on a different level when compared to the jupiter-6. There is literally no comparison. I still like the jupiter-6, great for layering with another synth.

I agree but the Jupiter 6 is more than just a layering synth. The Band Pass filter is awesome and the poly unison mode is wonderful.

Great match up! The Prophet-5 is far more significant from a historical and technological perspective obviously. Although, from a sonic perspective, I think the match up is closer, but that the Prophet-5 still wins out. That being said, the Jupiter-6 is absolutely superb and deserves to have been brought out into the spotlight a bit more, as we've seen people like yourself do recently. I will never sell mine. It is one of the synths I play most. Anyway, nice work! Keep this type of content coming!

Personal preference listening to the two here, is the Prophet 5. It has a fullness to it's sound that I gravitate to. I'd love to be able to play two patches at the same time on the Jupiter 6 but first and foremost is the sound and the Prophet 5 just has it. I'd sacrifice splits to get that sound all day long

I can’t really explain it…but the Prophet-5 was (and still is) magic. It’s sound is on countless recordings from the late 70’s through the 80’s. If you were a keyboard player, you HAD to own one. I personally got a lot of gigs just because I owned one.!! All those cool sounds from the 80’s were mine with the push of a button. The Jupiters were cool…they had their own sound and vibe. But for me, it was always the Prophet-5 and the Oberheims OB-X….total keyboard Nirvana !!!

JP6 has a multimode filter, combinable waveforms per oscillator, an arpeggiator, two kinds of polyphonic glide, a programmable pitch bender, MIDI, a splittable keyboard for playing two patches at once, a keyboard that doesn’t use Pratt-Reed gold plated J-wires that are always going bad, 6 voices instead of 5, and instant auto tune. The prophet-5 has none of these features. I’ve owned both. The JP6 is a way better synth in every way,
@anoniconoclast2030
@anoniconoclast2030 3 года назад
Add to that the bender board LFO can be modified to go slower for big sweeps. The action is very good and that band pass filter is awesome.

I've owned both too and I'd take the snappier envelopes, MUCH better low pass filter, filter FM, noise modulation, and just generally fatter, warmer sound of the P5 over the JP6.

All well and great but the Prophet is regarded as having arguably the top 3rd best sounding synths of all time. There is a reason it’s on every song !
@electro-classicorchestra1585
As a Prophet 5 owner, I am extremely bummed that there’s no reverse saw waveform on the LFO. The reverse saw is essential for pulsating bass lines. The regular saw wave on the LFO is useless! And props to the JP6 for its glissando mode in the portamento. Essential for playing Turn Me Loose by Loverboy and After the Love Has gone by Earth Wind and Fire 😊 If you follow my channel you know I have lots of synths. None of them gave glissando 😡

Had both of these, sold the Prophet 5. If you only had a couple of synths, the P5 probably makes sense, if you had a bunch of analogs, the JP6 sticks out from the crowd.

I trying to buy an analog hardware synth I make quick melodies and I try to put vocals over a trap beat something like the melodies you hear on here. I don’t have a lot of money but I would buy a used analog synth. What would you go for if u were in my shoes and I go for the sounds definitely. My max would be like a $2,000 analog synth

Beautiful, warm, soft, soothing vs. thin, harsh, exciting, punchy. The Prophet certainly sounds good, but if you want to get inspired, the Jp-6 is the better choice, IMO. My JP-6 is in the shop (not for a serious problem but for some future-proofing and the Florian Anwander filter mod) and I am seriously pining!

it's funny how a $7000 legendary synth has "my first keyboard" stickers attached to it. it's like a dentist bought this keyboard for his daughter in 1983 and nobody took the stickers off.

I wouldn‘t say the JP-6 sounds worse, just completely different. In fact, I like it more than the JP-8; there are some gorgeous patches in this video. The P5 has the warmest sound ever, but IMHO the polymod is overrated. You lose the 2nd oscillator, and the no. of destinations is very limited. I prefer dedicated LFOs per voice like on the (P08) Rev 2.

@@sauermusicDE Sure, I have several VSTis (OPX Pro II etc.) and a real OB-6 with SEM-like filters. Fantastic synths which can for sure sound very warm. However, the general perception is that 2-pole filters don‘t sound as warm and creamy as 4-pole filters.

Nobody has ever asked if the Jupiter 6 is better than the Prophet 5. Everyone already knows the answer. The JP6 was a major dud in its time and didn't acquire collectibility until pretty recently. ...and yes, I have owned both synths simultaneously on multiple occasions. The Jupiter 6 is a decent synth, don't get me wrong, just a little bit sterile and lacking low end. It's great to supplement other synths, but the Junos always sounded more full.
@loskedanne
@loskedanne 2 года назад
I agree with this. I always ended up dubbing my JP6 patches with the juno because it just sounded better dubbed than on it's own. JP6 is still great sounding and I think it's amazing in every way, but it's not the synth to buy if you want a bread and butter all-rounder.
@markus6409
@markus6409 Год назад
Nobody has asked for your opinion either, so it seems that you don't follow your own logic. I think "Alamo Music Sound Lab" is very sorry for this video. And what a honor: Listen People the synth expert has spoken. Listen carefully because he knows exactly which sound is better to you. I mean he specifically noticed that he had both synth SIMULTANEOUSLY. So it is a true and objective fact that the prophet 5 sounds better. A wise man falling down the stairs and tell people he flew. I prefer the Jupiter 6. period.
@jamesmeeker6933
@jamesmeeker6933 Год назад
@@markus6409 Question: under what conditions have you had the opportunity to compare a Jupiter 6 and Prophet 5 side-by-side? Generally speaking, and if you happen to be a Johnny-come-lately to synth collecting, check back in the archives (such as Analog Heaven's mailing list from the 90s) to confirm that, historically, the Jupiter 6 was a market failure on introduction and did not acquire a decent reputation until the 2000s. If you aren't new, you have no excuse not to know this.
@markus6409
@markus6409 Год назад
@@jamesmeeker6933 answer: I know that the jupiter 6 was kind of of a flop back then. How does that relate to my post? When i look back in history there was a time not long ago where most people had no interest in this boring analog sound anymore. Dx7 was the shit and a juno6 was thrown in the garbage. That the jupiter 6 was a major flop doesn't matter. The old instruments sound the same today than back then. And you don't have to have them both at the same time to know what you prefer. My taste is in reverse to yours. I really like the sound of the prophet 5 but i prefer the jupiter 6. The prophet 5 is not my kind of sound after all when i compare it to xpander or jupiter 6 or so. Maybe in 20 years old 90's va synth are what people search for? That shouldn't matter to you. I just meant you can't come here and say the prophet sounds better than the jupiter 6 for a fact. How dare you? The jupiter 6 is just a unique sounding synth like every synth is. And it has a very distinctive character that i very like. The filter is awesome. I love the concept and i love that "cold" Character. If you buy a synth because it was popular and is popular again then it is not so much about your personal taste and more about a statussymbol. I really don't like if people come up and pretend that there is a clear and objective way to rank the sound of synthesizers. You know how that is when you new to something and maybe young. You have to let people decide by themselves what they prefer. But i understand the you have tested them and you prefer the prophet 5. That is your personal opinon, nothing more. There are always movies f. E. which are flops and later they get very popular like donny darko. For you as a musician what does that mean to you that the prophet 5 was the most popular analog polysynth? Maybe my music profits or prophets from the jupiter6 and not so from the prophet 5. I don't want to shock but i also think the evolver is one of the best synth ever. Or i really like the alesis ion. I prefer a sem to a minimoog soundwise. What i mean is that it is just taste! Don't you dislike any popular synth which is hyped at the moment or back then? I don't want people to tell them that there are objective sound quality criteria. And you seems to be someone who think is able to tell people whats good or whats bad sound. So excuse me.
@jamesmeeker6933
@jamesmeeker6933 Год назад
@@markus6409 Let me get this right: according to your argument, there is no objective quality difference between the Prophet 5 and Jupiter 6, yet you claim to prefer it due to its "cold" character. Certainly there must be objective differences to account for the "unique" cold sound of the JP-6 that you praise. Objectively speaking, the Prophet 5 is the superior synth. It DEFINED what every polysynth afterwards should sound and operate. It is the yardstick that all other analog polys get measured against. True facts.
@splintercast8092
@splintercast8092 2 года назад
Let's be honest, the only thing the JP6 has over the P5 is the extra voice. With relation to all other factors that are of any real importance, the P5 is the far superior synth. This isn't a controversial opinion - it has been a commonly accepted fact for almost the last 30 years and I have no idea why this video is trying to present these two synths as being of a similar calibre. I've owned both by the way.
