40085 arrives at Hereford station with two railfreight vans.
Awaiting the rest of the speedlink freight which arrives via the ever present '08' shunter.
Meanwhile a crew change is afoot to the tune of constant whistling before leaving Hereford with that familiar English Electric growl.

Great film. 40085 stopped running in March the next year. At least you have it here in action. Great to see.

Superb stuff, really enjoyed this - the simple pleasure of just seeing (and hearing) a Class 40 idling away!

indeed, the side lamps on the Brake van, and the wave from the second man once underway (you get a second tip from the guard on unfitted trains to say the van is moving and the guard still with us, so presumably in response to this) would suggest that you are right

Very nice. Live near to Hereford so this is a nice thing to see rather than dull 175s.

I would sell my soul to be back in 1983.

Hereford was less busy those days except for the appearance of an occasional weekend steam special. There were far fewer passenger trains, those were usually Class 33-hauled with five Mk 1s and I think it gave train crews more time and have less to worry about safety.

@andrew chaston - you are terrifically funny. "Thank god for Mrs Thatcher and John Major" and "thank god the railways of Great Britain were put into private hands and are now run by accountants not railway people". That really is a very funny joke indeed!

Fantastic, railways were run by proper railwaymen back then.

Always something to learn from when visiting utube!. i didn't realize the 40s ventured into this part of the country. i am guessing it was some kind of M.O.D. working with the two short wagons?

You could see them down at Severn tunnel jcn pretty regular, they ventured down from Crewe on various jobs.

What a great video from a time when it was trainspotters heaven,and the world wasn't so pc,it's sad that some people need to spout political rubbish about the railways ,I would love to turn the clock back to those days !

+andybyrne50 Terrible health and safety procedures and polluting locos which thank goodness have been cut for scrap. We have far more efficient locos and railways today.
@andybyrne50
@andybyrne50 9 лет назад
+heelfan1234 health and safety (the world gone mad) ,and the more efficient trains you talk about are no more efficient ,and as a railwayman a lot of these trains are still in freight service or in preservation coming out of retirement to help the modern ones. P.s when you say health and safety ,try filling out all the crap forms that come with it !

+heelfan1234 Compared to road transport all of these are not nearly as inefficient. The Class 40 with it's short rake of vans was a better choice in the wider national interest.
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 8 лет назад
Isochest Well a class 40 with a longer rake of vans would surely be better? And it still usually needs road transport at either end to get to the final destinations.

Governments make rules and have chosen to give Road Haulage a free ride

must be running partially fitted, as vans should be air braked and the minerals are definitely vac as you can see the bag hanging down
