A 1980s-built, VW-powered Class 5 Unlimited Baja Restored by Its Original Builder.
A hardworking, successful business owner, a husband, a father of two daughters, and a racer for life: Mike Mocaby from Orange County, California, is all that. He also shined in off-road racing during the 1980s and ’90s with his Dad, Lyn. After Lyn unexpectedly passed away six years ago, Mike found their Class 5 Unlimited Baja race car - a Bug they raced together 30 years ago.

It gets real expensive to keep a big displacement VW engine alive. If you want to be competitive. But I agree with you it would be Rad to keep the air cooled classes alive.

@@njtProductions cheap and abundant and modern top end, but an ecotec would struggle up the hill in the video compared to the 3L type 4 vw, which is also a good bit lighter. The difference is a big bore type 4 2-motor program is $30,000 instead of $3,000

What a bitchen video! I remember that car. So cool that they restored it with the old Curnutts and Type 4. I’ve still got my 5/16 car that’s been sitting since’98. It’s got “Barstow Rash” on the roof too Thanks for a cool video👍

Pretty cool story. They should have more bajas at the VW shows. I never see bajas at the shows. Does the Classic have them? I know you would have to tow them since they are not street legal but it would be nice.
