A great loco to drive, although they needed a bit of added weight as a tendency to slip a little. There was certainly no need to have withdrawn them all so early on. Would still be around today if it weren't for EWS. Great video.

Recall seeing a 58 on a Cowley car working in the '90s,great loco, withdrawn well before their time and for what, crap 66s!

That's the first time i've heard one winding up the power, thanks. There's a good video by Locomaster Profiles called, 'Toton The Works' which has some good footage of a 58 in the workshop and how complex they became to work on due to all the modifications :(

Nice clip, it's hard to find clear footage of 58's to figure out what they actually sound like. Reminds me of a mixture of class 60 and Hst?

I believe the engines were similar design to the valenta & they also had a napier turbocharger just like the valenta which is why they had a similar scream

@@MrGrumpygit488 Knowing that their engine is from the Ruston-Paxman RK3 family (The 58's were powered by the 12-cylinder 12RK3ACT), which I believe were based on the English Electric K/V engines, I think the Class 58 was powered by what was essentially a much more improved version of the Class 37's engine.

I loved the 58’s why did they have to get rid of them so early. I remember I was at Doncaster open day when 58004 came out of the paint shop.

A number of these locomotives have been dismantled at Toton by EWS.
