Ride footage of a class 701/043. enjoy the sounds and acceleration on the Windsor and Eaton Riverside branch.
.I firstly got to enter the cab, and even got to talk to the driver , what a nice dude. :^)
0-30mph seems to be around 19 seconds

Looks like it has reasonably good acceleration- would be interesting to see how it accelerates to top speed on a bit of line where it can go straight to 100mph without line speed restrictions limiting driver input

Indeed, id love to see it. Or at least 90mph, something tells me 3nd a half minutes to100mph. Comparing it to other third rail acceleration

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 could be right though let’s be honest - it’ll rarely ever reach that high as most of the lines it’s set to be used on have lower line speeds

@@AnthonyFurnival i agree. Unless we see them sometimes go down via Winchfield someday. Or SWR decide to increase the speed limit on lines towards woking as a semi fast. Im very very convinced theyll be used outside of metro reigions in some due time. They have the facilities for it and the top speed. 455s dont so it makes sense that youd never see them get used elsewhere.

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 I don’t really see them being used outside of metro routes as SWR have sufficient stock to cover all other lines - that aside the internal configuration is very much geared towards metro routes - I.e lots of standing space

@@AnthonyFurnival yeah true, but i mean given that .they hit 100mph .have two toilets .chargers .plenty of seating .fast acceleration I believe they could easily be rotated via different routes. Class 458s sometimes get used as a semi fast or fast it would seem. Its like how 377s are a practically universal rolling stock. 701s could do what some 450s do on off peaks. I guess its also why 5 car 701s are being used on the outskirts of london apparently.

4:03 it got 41 seconds to 49... but the 465/9 is still a little faster at the high end with 40 seconds to 51. 701 has a faster start though, as 10 seconds to 19mph and 15 seconds to 27 is very quick. About the same as a 465 BREL if I'm correct... I've had 465023/035 get 11-12 seconds to 20mph before

Wasnt even the best of the performance. This could have been on a gradient for all i know amd the driver wasnt always keen on going super fast. One things for certain. They have gentle yet fast acceleration. Its hard to explain. You dont get shot backwards but yet still it gets to speed fast. It likely is 0.7m/s²

@@packkeysthomasshrimptonyeah, im refrencing the 0.7m/s² , most aventras are 0.9m/s² at full power. Class 720s are 0.8Xm/s².

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 10 seconds to 19 is about 0.9 m/s/s acceleration. 0.7 would be 10 seconds to 15 or so. Yours was on maximum current

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 I've done the calculation on that bit of footage (4:03) and taking into account it reaches around 6.3mph in about 3 seconds the "initial" acceleration would be around 0.94m/s^2, which we can round to 0.9m/s^2.

Not sure if it's something to do with the way you're positioning the camera but at 5:22 ignoring the GPS statistics it visually looks like it shoots off really quickly

Yep, the 701 is quick. Only slightly behind a 465/9 from 0-50mph

It is indeed . They are pretty consistant. They start of fast then maintain a class 376 style acceleration around 50mph to 60mph. Go watch my other videos on class 376 to see what i mean.

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 I think they must be geared in a way which prioritises initial acceleration, due to their metro style operations. That would explain why the acceleration drops off a bit at, as you said around 50mph

@@SolomonClarkeTrains-nw1sf which shows something about what acceleration stats are reffering to. 376s only start of slow because of limited motors vs heavy body. The 701s gear to motor ratio actually goes slightly higher when i listen to the synch sound of the motor (701s are probably pre grared for 110mph) and i think 730s/2 will have the same exact sounds as these. 730/0s are lower geared (but sound better) Class 376s based on motor sound (conpared to other trains), sound like they are geared near 95mph to100mph exactly . Just lack dampers on the wheels to achieve it. The 376 Probably and i say probably, has the best gear to power ratio on third rail. As they dont seem to want to slow down after 60mph 🤣🤣 maybe better than met cams after 60mph (met cams being actually lower geared so it makes sense) their motor sounds indicate they have a much lower gear ratio despite the speed limitations on both.
