Classic 12-string guitar riffs 

Oh man. I love that story. I recently watched the Wish You Were Here documentary again. Great stuff. When I was little the Wall was popular but by the time I started playing guitar David Gilmour was pushed to the side in the guitar mags (the only source of learning stuff at the time) for Vai, MacAlpine, DiMeola, Morse. It was all about playing fast. Finally around 1995 I got my head on straight and realized that Gilmour is the most melodic soloist on the planet (I give a nod to Dickie Betts too, what he does over 3 minutes with 5 notes in the middle of Blue Sky is beautiful). The 12 string sounds richer. I want to say "clangy". I can see why George Harrison liked the 12 stringers. The Byrds I think used a 12 stringer for an intro, 3 miles high?

LMAO. Nicely played Lance. If you're serious about being stuck in start I'd be happy to help you get on learning path that won't require a lot of time (15 minutes a day, 4 days a week) and will result in success. The best part is there is no charge. No angle or purchase down the road. There are tons of free lessons out there and I'll give you a blueprint to follow. I've been teaching for 30 years (a lot of people throw that out but I have spent 12 of those years teaching full time) and I can't tell you how many 30, 40, 50, 60 somethings say they wish they took it up when they were younger. Many of those people are excellent guitar players today. Again, if it was just a joke, it was funny! :)

@@8MinuteAxe 8 Minute Axe I know I'm about a month late on this, but I just discovered your channel. If you're still willing, I would love to have a blueprint/path towards learning guitar again. I owned one as a child and taught myself how to copy a few songs, but never even learned the basics, and it just ended up collecting dust for years. I'm getting ready to try picking it up again, and I really don't know where to start, but I could definitely cut 30 minutes out of my day to dedicate to practice.

Kylo I'd be happy to get you started. I'll have more time tomorrow to get you set up on a plan but for now give me the basics. What type of music do you listen to the most (or the one that you're most interested in playing)? 30 minutes is more than enough time to get you moving very quickly. I normally recommend no more than 15 minutes at a time to start with for a couple of reasons. There is going to be a 2 to 3 week period at the beginning where the fingers are going to be a little sore and the bulk of the frustration comes at the beginning. I've taught hundreds (if not thousands) of students over the years and if you can make it past the first couple of weeks you will see massive improvement quickly. Right now Fender is giving away three months of free lessons to the first 100,000 people who respond. I recommend you go there as soon as you see this and see if you can get in. I looked over the lessons and they're very well thought out. You could use those as your main source and you can reach out to me anytime with questions. My email is markaranalli@gmail.com. So I'm in the middle of editing a new video, your comment comes in, and I start laughing so loudly, my fiance asks me what's going on. You're probably the 10th person to point it out and you're so right. Honestly, all of the gigs and sessions over the years did not prepare me one bit for being in front of the camera. This was probably the 5th or 6th video I shot. In the first couple I couldn't even remember my name! And as far as executing the riffs. Jeez. These are riffs I've played effortlessly 1000 times yet I could barely get through them and still had to settle for a couple with choked out notes. I hope you at least enjoyed the comedy at the end where Don Henley kicks the crap out of me! I felt much better doing that. Anyway, I'd like to think I've improved a little. I really appreciate you saying that. I was just telling another viewer that I don't even bother commenting on some of my favorite youtubers videos because I would rather be ignored than get a 'thanks man'. I don't mean to knock anyone and yes it's easy when you have less than 1000 subs to respond (the extra traffic lately has me taking an hour a day to respond, time that I enjoy the most) but if I got to the point where it was impossible to respond it would probably mean that I was making money from the channel at which time I could get someone to help me edit these darn videos and free up more time to interact. 8 Minute Axe absolutely man, you’re a genuine guy and that’s hard to come by anymore, I’m looking forward to seeing your channel grow, and I would never hold it against you that you couldn’t reply to every comment, I would just look back to the time that you did and be happy that I was worth your time, and if your channel does grow a lot, it would be like counting the stars to try and reply to every comment.

It definitely is very time consuming to respond to everyone. I'm long winded on top of that. LOL. My channel is still getting about 10 times the views that a 1400 sub channel should get and I know things will go back to reality soon, but I've been logging on twice a day, and spending about an hour each time responding to everyone. The hardest part is that comments that are in thread replies don't pop up in my unanswered queue so I have to manually go through each video and make sure someone didn't send something at the end of a thread. Surely, those will be impossible to respond to if the channel continues to grow. I'm also a believer in karma. I figure if I do the right thing for the right reasons, good things will come. The best part of the recent success is that I can look my 9 year old in the eye and say 'you see what happens when you work hard and do the right thing!'. He watches YT all the time and at first didn't understand how I didn't have 1 million subs. I've kept him in the loop and when I was celebrating getting 5 subs and 50 views in one day he understood better how hard it is now to even get the little success I've had. Playing the 12 string definitely gets addictive. All of these were fun to play. I'm making an instructional on the best way to play Hotel Cali live acoustic solo and I'm assuming that most guys don't own a 12 string or at least don't lug to a gig, but it just doesn't sound as big with the 6. I carried my 6 and 12 strings with me for years with my band. In places too small for me to have 3 guitars on stage I used my 6 string with a chorus pedal to help replicate the 12 string sound on Hotel California.

A chorus pedal sounds like a 12 string... Get that right!

I really appreciate the kind words. I've met so many cool people because of this. Way better than the grind of being on the road. LOL. I decided that whenever I came across a channel smaller than mine (however big or small that may be) I would offer to give the channel a shout out or do whatever I could to promote them. The combination of a cheap 12 string with a HUGE neck (I borrowed it from a student) and a lot of red light nerves (this was one of the first videos I did). I really appreciate that. It's extremely tough to break through but comments like yours really do make it worthwhile. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of a long edit I think about the fact that during the height of my band's popularity it was a home run to have 300 fans to show up for a gig so I consider the 350 subs I have a true privilege. Hey man. What a great song. Funny thing. Back in the early 2000s my band opened for David Byrne in NY in front of maybe 1000 people. About three weeks later we opened for the Tom Tom Club (Chris and Tina's band) in New Haven in front of about 500 (200 of which we brought in). I thought to myself, if only they could patch up their differences they could have played in front of 25,000. Band relationships can be tough though. More complicated than family sometimes. I bought an Ibanez 12 for $300 (I borrowed the 12 string in the first video from a student) but I'm going to send it back. I have my eye on a used Taylor 150e ($600) but like you said, its a very specialized instrument. The best part of doing this are all the amazing stories. I love it. I think about all of the trips to the music stores over the years, the one chance I had at buying a Cort double neck (based on the Gibson ES-1275) and passed! The amazing Aria Pro II my buddy got for $150. And you're right. With 12 strings, there's crap and then there's trying to justify spending at least $600 on a very specialized instrument. That's awesome that you got that rare find. I bought an Ibanez a couple of weeks ago. Check out the video (it's complete with another run in with Don Henley. This time I sell my soul to him). Now it's decision time. I'm looking at maybe a Guild for $500 or a used Taylor 150 for $600. I would much rather be buying a Jaguar that I've had my eye on but these 12 string videos have been by far my most popular and honestly I am starting to enjoy playing it much more. Interesting that you bought a 12 string for your first guitar. I bet it was a little tough to start but you must have been a beast when you switched to the 6 string? What type of stuff do you play? I'm thinking of doing a video about songs that were originally recorded on a 6 string but would have sounded better on a 12. This one was borrowed from a student and was in rough shape. I recently put some work into it (filed nut, sanded saddle) and I have it sounding much better now. 8 Minute Axe thanks a lot friend . Yes I am a German but living since 30 Years in Madrid Spain , I married a Spanish women , and moved.., never regretted . The Takamine I bought is the G3 DC 12 . It was really hard to me to make a decision, but finally I rememberd , Nils lofgren, Glenn Frey, Bonjovi.. and all the others , this couldn’t fail. And the Takamine is ver good and loud (Dreadnought body) will have a look at hour video and leave you a comment and like and subscribe. Keep on playing , and stay healthy.

Hey Cattracks. When I made this video 9 months ago, I didn't own a 12-string and knew very little about the history of the instrument. I had heard the name Leo Kottke, but didn't know his music. About 4 months ago, this video blew up and I through all of my focus on the 12-string. I'm on my third guitar. I finally settled on a Takamine GJ72. Beautiful guitar, incredibly well made, and a huge, balanced sound. I've extensively researched the history of the instrument. I even did a brief history in my video THE RIFF THAT MADE THE 12-STRING FAMOUS ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2iJpdOeE57A.html and I've been playing it about 6 hours a day. Viewers have gotten me deep into Leo Kottke, all kinds of corridos, a lot of 70s prog rock (I've even gotten into French Canadian 70s prog band Harmonium). I was actually doing a lot of fingerstyle as this video was starting to gain traction (I had just completed two Tommy Emmanuel courses and was playing a lot of solo country blues) and Leo's music really intrigued me. I've become proficient at 12-string finger picking though I dare say it's a strong suit of mine. I've been working up Vaseline Machine Gun which will most likely be my first Kottke post. I have the picking parts down but I still need to get my slide playing up to snuff. I'm not sure if you caught my video of Travelling Riverside Blues LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED ON A 12-STRING ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E8ZUO4W15Jk.html but you can see that my acoustic slide playing needs a little work, mostly with my attack since Leo effortlessly moves between picking and the slide. Hey Daniel. Thanks so much for the positive feedback on the video. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. One thing you can try is to economize your effort. It's something that I really focus on when teaching kids. Don't squeeze the chord until you're ready to play it. Eventually, you'll get used to this. A side benefit will be that it will help you control other notes from ringing out. Another idea would be to forgo barre chords altogether. Tim Pierce has an excellent video on how he rarely uses barre chords anymore. Try using different voicings. If you need any help with it, feel free to email me and we can discuss in more detail.
