I'm sure it's been said before but it would be cool to do a series of videos or one big one where you test an amp before and then have it recapped and retest to see how much of a difference it makes

It would be interesting to see how much power an amp like this would produce after a recap and being refurbished. I wonder if it would make more power dynamically.

Ofcourse. Capacitors lose their strength over the years. Recapping all that would pretty much bring it back to it's rated specs.

@@envisionelectronics Electrolytic type DC capacitors lose capacitance & insulation strength if stored for long times even if they were never used. The Al oxide layer on the metal foil depletes & causes the problem. So long story short; they lose capacity over time even if not used.

I had the 4050 in my 1980 trans am in 1993. I remember my dad ordered it from crutchfield for me for Christmas. I believe it was $199. We had a $200 limit for Christmas so it was definitely less than $200. Drove my MTX Terminator 2x12's and two horns factory box perfect back then.. Can still hear Metallica and AC/DC blasting. Back then the speakers didn't need crazy wattage.

Alphasonik had a series of really unique looking amps in 1992 that included the FA-100 C, FA-150C and FA-200C. They had a transparent cyro acrylic cover and Forced Air Cooling (fan). It would cool if Big D. could get his hands on one of those and test it. This was another awesome video, loved it!

I owned the PMA-2150 class A Alphasonik amp back in 1992. Beautiful sound because of it being class A, but it ran hot. Hot like i had taken 2 fans from computer power supplies and attached them to the heat sink right over the Alphasonik label. I think the poor efficiency you are seeing is because that should be a Class A amp you are testing. It was sold through Crutchfield and advertised as having a "military grade circuit board" for durability. I used this amp to power 2 Pioneer 12 inch subs in my1969 Camsro.

They were decent for the money , when a truly great amp would set you back 2-3 times what the Alphasonic and others like it would cost ya . It was a different world then . Seems everybody with anything to do with the electronics world had a line of car audio equipment , so yeah , those directories were damn near indispensable . Some things haven't changed all that much , either , especially the ILS ( If Lightening Strikes ..) ratings standards for amplifier power output used by the most " budget oriented " manufacturers .

I wonder if the amplifier was connected to power and turned on and left on for a few hours or a day if it would possibly produce better results.... The thinking behind this is if the amplifier has been sitting around unused, it's capacitors have possibly gone to sleep and need some time to wake up, that is unless they have dried out and there's no chance that they are coming back from the dead...... Sometimes you can see the capacitors getting hot through a thermal camera as they are waking up...... I think that it would be an interesting test especially for these old timers...... You never know, one amplifier might surprise you......

Their address is 3130 West 15th Ave Hialeah, FL 33012 Which also comes up as the address for Orion. I didn't know they had anything to do with each other? Big D this week has been great but also depressing. I just don't see many young people into systems anymore. Last month I picked up a kicker 4 channel amp and was talking to one of the guys that worked there, and I asked if he ever gets to install big systems anymore. He told me they don't install amps that much period. Most installs were cameras and remote start. Why have people become satisfied with stock audio? They still suck compared to aftermarket.
