If you are one of those people who is reluctant to "waste" fabric on samples, make the samples the size of a placemat and donate the placemats to Meals on Wheels or another charity. Or you can assemble your samples into a quilt as you go quilt. This idea can help free you from fear of free motion!
I'm binge watching your videos. I just love you to pieces. Very informative and valuable to a newbie who's never ever FMQ'd but is rarin' to go. Thank you very much for sharing so much knowledge!
Thank you! I just ordered my cutting mats and I plan to get busy. I’m of a vintage age and I’m learning from a younger quilter and I appreciate that fact!
Made them. Marked them. Quilted them. Beautiful! And so precise-ish ( you know the pivot point nudges now and then). Love this template. Made a short and long template.
Another great tutorial. I just love your calm voice, you make me feel like I can do it too. I have used the iron away pens for years and never have had any problems of any kind. Thank you again for your tutorials.
I can't tell you how excited and happy I am that you did this video. Ordered my supplies. I love the Baptist fan pattern. I always send my quilts to the longerarm quilter for it. Thank you for breaking it all down. THANK YOU! 🥰🧵🪡❤️
🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵 I am learning a TON about drawing out Baptist fans! I've always wanted to try them. You've shown me how to conquer little things that never even occurred to me! Thanks!! By the way, I am a hand quilter, but may try my hand at machine quilting on my charity quilts. So this is GREAT!!
see?! so helpful and useful for me!!!! Your videos are very helpful. I have a big quilt I really want to do baptist fans on but had NO idea how to do it!!!!!
Hello! I just got to sit down with my hand quilting and to watch your video. I hope you have a wonderful and creative week ahead! Thank you for sharing your video and your talent.
My second comment...LOL....I watched the video 3-4 more times, made my template, punches the holes, and got started. I made a quilt that I wanted to quilt something that I had never done before. It's very busy, lots of stars, so I started the baptist fan as you demonstrated. It's coming out good! I had no doubt in your instructions, but I was wondering if I could do it. I can do it!!! Thanks so much.
Hello again! Nice to see another video. Great tutorial!! I am going to attempt to make a template, and give this style of quilting a go. Thanks so much for your time!
I hope you are having a good weekend! I decided to do a Baptist Fan motif in the baby quilt I just finished. You're explanation is excellent. I have a circle cutting ruler that I'm using for my template but I didn't know how they nested together. Thank you for this great description. I've marked the 1st 2 rows & I'm looking forward to quilting it! I'll try one of the variations next time.
I was JUST checking your channel out YESTERDAY to see if you'd posted a new video and I missed it 🥴😁 I'm SO GLAD to see one up today! I really like your template! Imma gonna make one! 🥰😁❤️
Very good tutorial, I love the Baptist fan pattern. I hand quilted fans all over a queen size quilt years ago but used an all over pattern I made myself with template plastic. Your way of tracing the pattern is much more compact. I will do it that way in future. Thanks, I like the way you explain things.
I learned a lot here! I'm a brand new hand quilter and I love this design but had no idea how to tackle the marking. I'm also going to check out those heat erase pens! What a great idea.
Thank you last week I watched your video, I been scared to try free motion quilting but that all changed after seeing your video, This video is awesome too will try it on my next art quilt.
Hi Megan, I used this free hand and it didn’t come out badly, but I love the template you made to give yourself lines to follow much better. I didn’t think to make a template for myself, but I sure am glad you thought through this process and I wasn’t aware they have a 1/8” hole punch. Thank you for sharing, 🥰 Chris
Thank you for this design. I have a home machine with a small throat and this will be great for my placemats. Just stitching over the lines of piecing is boring looking Plus I just got a free motion foot so this will be a great practice piece for me.
“I will do fmq, I will do fmq, I will do fmq”. This is my mantra and watching you and your great examples, which I have watched many many times I know I will do it one day. I practice on paper all the time. Still scared 😱. One of my guild friends gave me an old panel to try to get comfortable with trying. But it’s the business of prints and my not seeing good that are another deterrent. Also messing up a hard worked quilt top. Suggestion please.!!
Placemats are the best way. I also do not use my expensive fabric to practice...Walmart or Hobby Lobby and of course scrap pieces of batting. Number one rule, breathe.
It is useful to see this on a sample. However, I always wonder how to do this over an entire quilt that you have to navigate. Is it really practical to trace over an entire quilt?
Such a great solution! Very clever! Love your creativity and ingenuity. I already have some template plastic but it is on the light side. Would you advise me to pick up the thicker stuff? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Will those ink marks return when the quilt gets very cold? I marked a pattern on fabric with a ink pin something like your's. When pressing on an applique some of the ink marks disappeared. I put my project in my freezer overnight. All the ink marks were back the next morning. Could the marks return with age? That is a wonderful idea. Making and using a template to mark and sew those lines as even as possible.
I was hoping you had the template making and marking instructions written down in a PDF. I even searched your website but couldn't find anything. I will re-watch & pause the video to write down all the instructions and them type up my own copy.
