This is my look back at one of the most interesting and unique machines on the 1970s, Yamaha's HL500. Produced in very limited numbers in 1978 and 1979 (only about 400 actually HLs were ever produced) by Norton in the UK for Yamaha, the HL was a spiritual successor to the YZ400F a full twenty years before Yamaha's super-thumper made its debut. Using a Yamaha TT500 four-stroke motor and a modified Husqvarna chassis, Swedish legends Torsten Hallman, Sten Lundin (the "H" and "L" in HL500) tried to build a four-stroke that could compete with the two-strokes of the time. While only moderately successful, the HL500 remains an icon of seventies motocross and one of the most interesting machines of its era.
