Here, vintage & classic British saloon cars from the 1920s, 1930s (and a few 1940s) make up this pre-war car photo collection. All of the cars featured were either built in the 20s / 30s, or designed in that era but perhaps built for a few years post-WW2 in the late 40s - examples include the Morris 10M, Austin 16, and the Humber Hawk saloons shown at a classic car show a few years back.
Many of the photos feature vintage cars, ie those built throughout the 1920s up to and including 1930, the remainder are post-vintage saloons. All were seen by myself at old-car gatherings inc VSCC meetings over the last ten years or so.
If you're a fan of pre-war British saloons of this type, please let me know in the comments and give the video a like, thanks. If you'd like to see further collections like this, please let me know.
I've tried to include a variety of makes and models, from the once-common low-cost popular models from Austin, Morris, Singer, Hillman etc, with more luxurious offerings from the likes of Lagonda, Alvis, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The one thing they have in common is that they are all (bar one) saloons, or in a few cases fixed-head coupes. Tourers and sportscars tend to get the most attention nowadays, so it's time that the pre-war saloons get a mention.
I received a request to show Standard Flying 8s in a video, so in the collection are pre-war Flying 8 and post-war "8" saloons and - for comparison - a rare DHC version.
Cars featured include one or more of the following:
Riley 9 Monaco, 12/4 Falcon, 12/4 Adelphi, Kestrel 12/6 & 12/4, 9 Merlin
Singer Junior
Austin 7 (inc box saloon, Swallow, Ruby etc), 12, Big 7, 8, 10 Cambridge, 12/4 Low Loader taxi, 10/4, 10 Lichfield
Ford 7Y, Model Y
Hillman 14
Talbot 3 Litre, 105 Airline, 14/45
Lagonda M45 saloon
Wolseley 14, 8, 10, Hornet
Humber 14/40 fabric saloon etc
Alvis 12/50, Speed 25
Morris 8 Series 1 & 2 & Series E, 10M, 10/4, Minor, 10 Coupe
Standard 16 Jubilee Saloon, 14, 10/12 Speedline, 9 Teignmouth, Big 9, 9hp, 8, Flying 8
Bentley 3 Litre
Rolls-Royce 20hp
MG 1.5 Litre VA, SA, 18/80 saloons
Aston Martin Mk2 Long chassis
Triumph Vitesse, Super 9 barn find, Pillarless Saloon
Sunbeam 20hp
Frazer Nash "Owlet"
Vauxhall 14 DX, 20/60 Grosvenor saloons, Cadet, 10hp, 25hp Limousine
Daimler DB17 Sports Saloon
BSA Scout Coupe
Standard Swallow SS1, SS2 saloons
Rover P1 14hp Streamline Saloon, Light Six Sportsmans Coupe, P2, P3, 8 (air-cooled)

What a wonderful period of British car design. The beautiful Vauxhall 10 brings back many happy memories of my Gran's next door neighbour's car. Black with red interior. Wow!

The two tone Riley at 5.07 is a 12/4 Kestrel six light, believed to be the 3rd off the production line. First registered in December 1935. It was rather a nice surprise seeing our car in your video.

And so inventive too, with little touches of indeviduality, to stand out from the rivals. --lets face, it the 20's especially, they were very boxy.

I was surprised and impressed by the number of Rileys shown. I've always believed them to be one of the more minor manufacturers, but now realise that they must have been quite prolific in period. I have fond memories of a late RME (468DRF) saloon which I owned over 50 years ago. Although built in the 1950s, it was one of those cars that you mention which still owed much to it's prewar origins. Thank you for the nostalgia trip!

A wonderful display, and well presented. I was particularly thrilled to see so many gorgeous Rileys. My first car was a Riley Kestrel, I was 17, and naievly , hoped to restore it in time to pass my driving test---on minimal earnings, Unfortuneately--I had to have it hauled out of a scrap yard first---this was 1958. Having spent many hours and all all my savings on it, In comes the M'O'T test, And out goes thousands of great old cars---mine included.

My cousin had a Triumph saloon car from the 1930s, Four adults would go to work in it to Scunthorpe, and when we came to a graded hill we would get out and push it up the hill, once at the top we would speed down the hill and the momentum would take as along the flat for miles, One day he cut up the car on the works site where he was fitter foreman, and sold the aluminium scrap. This was in 1957. after this time we had to 'thumb a lift' to work which wasn't very successful !

Great collection of cars, really appreciate the time you spent. On the two-tone Riley you were not sure about. I think it is a 1936 six light Kestrel, quite possibly a six cylinder. A picture of the back would likely confirm this. I have a 1935 15/6 Kestrel special series, which has the same chassis as the MPH and is very similar to your picture, but has four windows with the older so-called coffin shape. ,

The two-tone Kestrel (CLB 749) is a 12/4. It is also one of the earliest 6-lights, built late 1935, though of course a 1936 model. There is no difference in outward appearence between the 12/4s and 15/6s - besides bonnet length. The MPH has a wheelbase of 8' 1.5" and is underslung at the rear, totally different to that of a 15/6 Kestrel.

Several cars in this video have fabric bodies. My father's first car was a 1929 Morris Minor, which he acquired in 1939. It had a fabric body and spoked wheels. I always assumed that the fabric bodies were for economy vehicles, but some of the fabric bodied cars shown are more prestigious. Any ideas?

Ref your new to you Renault 4cv. I was looking at a video on you tube, yesterday. It was a historic hill climb, set in France. There were a number of Renault 4cvs taking part. The camera showed the interior of a number of them, all left hand drive and modified with racing seats etc. But they all seemed to have wind up front door windows, so maybe not just on right hand drive examples. Thanks.

@James Swan - Agreed- and either a Kestrel Sprite 12/4 or a Kestrel15/6, 1936-37 - have seen both with wipers-over-windscreen. Sprite was a kind of top of the range name - derived from the 2 seater Riley Sprite. Kestrel like the one at 8:38 .

@oldclassiccarUK
@oldclassiccarUK 3 года назад
Lanchesters very rarely pop up at shows I go to sadly, so there haven't been many opportunities to photograph a pre-war example (post-war LD10s feature in the other photo collections vids). I can think of one '30s Lanchester that occasionally used to emerge at local gatherings, but no others
