I thought I’d do the same as last week and pop the US equivalents to the rank for SJs list. 56 Aubrey 64 Skylar 79 Ariana 89 Emery 115 Eliza 133 Elliana 142 Amara 166 Sienna 179 Freya 181 June 256 Phoebe 265 Jane 374 Hallie 377 Gwendolyn 382 Anaya 396 Joy
I’ll join you with the same rankings for NSW, Australia. I can only find top 100 but strangely there are a few of the same names!! 56 Ayla 64 (tied 63) Savannah & Aaliyah 79 (tied) Imogen & Eliana 89 (tied 87) Clara, Claire, Eliza & Maddison
I fell in love with Jane years ago as a first name with my affection reading all of Jane Austen's novels and Jane Eyre. I named my daughter that this year. Though I'm American and many girls have Jane as a middle name, I've only known an older woman with that name. Every person I've mentioned it to says it's such a pretty name.
I think Josie is such a cute and pretty name but I am literally incapable of hearing it without hearing Drew Barrymore yelling "I'm not Josie Grossy anymore!" in Never Been Kissed 😂
I love these vintage style names that also work as nature style names (like Daphne, Stella, etc.) I'd love to see a list of names that fit both these categories! Eco-vintage? Classic nature? Vintage boho? Whatever you want to call it!
Oh there are loads of really unexpected nature and floral names that were popular during the Edwardian period! I was reading on this topic a few months back, I believe it was an article on the British baby names site, and was really charmed by the style of the period. Some of the registered names included Snowdrop Gladys, Clematis Mary Claire, Mignonette Ethel, Ivy Narcissus, Acacia Harriet, Claude Oak, Felix Ruby, Gladiolus Bernard, and Linden Fritz Barnabas. All born in the late 1800s through early 1900s.
My 6 year old daughter is named Lydia, after my great great grandmother Lydia Minerva. We get so many lovely compliments from people of all ages about it! It’s super timeless, feminine, but not overused at all. I’m still in love with it! On our list we also had Audrey, Naomi, Eleanor, Rosalie, Annie.. so I’m loving this list!
Yeah I knew an Amber and she was like a hippie, free spirit, cool chic. But also my Mum loves Amber Jewellery and if I had of ever had children I would have got the Name Amber in somewhere to honour her.
I love vintage/classic-yet-usual names. My favorites from the list: Edith, Verity, Stella, and Daphne. I think Eve is based on the Hebrew name, Chavah, pronounced HAH-vah. ...
My daughters name is Erin. I chose it because it’s a form of Irene which was my mother’s name. I was told both meant “Peace” I think they are both lovely names.
My little sister's name is Bethany, and I came up with it! My parents didn't like the girl name they had for my brothers (Mary Elizabeth), so they asked us kids to think of names. I came up with Bethany, and they used it! Her nickname is Bemmy, because one of my brothers couldn't pronounce her name properly when she was in the womb, and we all started calling her that and it just stuck!
I named my oldest daughter, Lois after my grandmother who was Lois Lane!! (no joke) In high school she dated a boy named Clark.... and Yes, they were known as "Lois & Clark" I took them to Six Flags where they do those drawings & I had the artist do the drawing of him carrying her while flying thru the air. It was SO cool!! (my youngest daughter is Colette)
Was that an advert? I bet my Mum would know this. Sadie reminds me of an Alkakine Trio song which is... quite satanic punk. But genuinely the name Sadie is great!
I loved the name Nancy so much when I was younger, after watching The Craft with my brother when we should have been sleeping lol. The character is pretty dark but I always thought Nancy sounded really edgy and unique.
Great list!! I've had Daphne on my name list for about 10 years, i've always loved it from the movie "What A Girl Wants" with Amanda Bynes. Perfect bilingual (French/English) name. Our baby girl is Elinor, also quite vintage. I really love the name Erin too. ♡
Dog adoption announcement ;D How cool that Daphne is on this list, as I've just adopted a rescue labrador retriever and named her Daphne Wildflower Tadgh Bisous, almost all coming from Baby Name Mondays! Thanks for the inspiration, SJ! I'm not having any children so I have to use my names somehow lol. Daphne was ultimately chosen not because of Bridgerton, but from the Greek myth, author Daphne DuMaurier, and Daphne Moon from the tv program Frasier hahaha. I love nature names, and Wildflower was just perfect! Tadgh is an ancient Irish name meaning storyteller, and it's the Irish form of Timothy (my late brother's name). And Bisous is French for kisses! xxxx
When we were talking about adopting a fur baby my husband and I had a list of names picked out, but when we found our baby girl they we loved her name, MOLLY. It just suits her, but we did give her a middle name mischief. We aren’t having children either (well I can’t and he has 4 kids) so I use my names for my fur children as well.
A lot of the 90’s names! I think I still haven’t ever seen my name in one of the baby name monday videos (which has always surprised me!) and then I saw how low it is on the UK list! 😳 I’m bias because it’s my name, but Kimberly/Kimberley is pretty
My daughters name is Edie! And we almost named her twin brother Theodore. I liked Edith my partner liked eden so we went in the middle and named her Edie.
Edith, Annie, Naomi, Margaret, Lydia( this one is probably my favorite) and Bethany all work very nicely as do Eve, Verity( with the short form Vera) and Daphne, which is my second favorite after Lydia, I love the sound and meaning and that you could honor a Laura/ Lauren / Lawrence with this form in a less obvious way).
My great grandmothers name was Lydia. I always liked it. My son's wife expecting a girl in October. And putting my mother's name, Louise for middle name... Lydia Louise but my son's friend from school named his little girl Lydia already 😊😍😔
I love so many: Erin, Annie, Eve, Lydia, Stella, and Naomi. I think of Lydia and Naomi in the same genre, as well as Gloria. Funny thing, I always thought Naomi was a Japanese name because the only Naomi I knew was Japanese.
I have a 10 month old called Meadow. I’ve always loved the name and I haven’t bumped into another yet. Her middle name is Thomasina which was my grandmothers name.
Hi SJ, greetings from Slovakia. I'm fan of this channel for a while, but never posted a comment before. Not sure how I found it, but I'm been watching it over a year now. I've been searching for the given names and their meanings for years (even though I have no kinds) anytime I heard an interesting name, but I was surprised and delighted that someone has created such a great channel as you did and there's a new video every week ! ...I'm so happy I can finally see STELLA (officially spelled only with 1 L in my country) in the list, my all time favorite and so happy you spoke about it in a positive way. I remember it was mentioned in "girl names from century ago" (1921) video with no special comments, then it was mentioned in the video mentioning names that people hate and I was disappointed. Then I was disappointed again when it was not mentioned in the "Star, moon etc" list and now voila Stella is finally honored :-). I know it's often used as brand name, but I love it from the time when I read some 20 years ago that Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith decided to call their daughter Stella and I know a couple of other celebrities did as well. ... I hope to have a daughter one day and that Stella (which's becoming more popular in my country and I sometimes feel like "no, it's my name") would fit to her surname. Very small number of people in Slovakia has a middle name, but if I was a English speaker, I would go for Joy or June as a middle name. I like other names from this list as well, Annie is so cute and I always considered Naomi to be a very interesting name. ...If you ever do a video on Slavic names, more than happy to advise.
A very classic 1920s girl name is Cyrilla, the female version of Cyril, and it means ‘lordly’ so could be the name for quite a little warrior woman:) I imagine it’ll be seen more now that it’s been used in the Netflix series The Witcher, so could be one to use ahead of the trend :)
I was so excited when I heard my name "Bethany" used on this list! I've always loved my name. I've tried going by Beth before but it just didn't fit me. One common problem I ran into with my name, in school, was teachers reading my name quickly and calling me Brittany. And over the phone people often hear Stephanie. But it's really not a big deal and I still love my name 🥰
I loved last week's list of boys' names. The equivalent list for girls, though, is nothing special. I guess it speaks to our underlying dichotomy of the adventurous approach to girls' names as opposed to traditional for boys. Margaret, for example, doesn't excite me, but I adore Greta.
I have a Margaret… we call her Maggie Grace. I wanted a double barrel name. I also love the name because there are literally endless nicknames: Greta, Pearl, Maraid (rhymes with parade), Midge, Meg, Daisy, Etta, Maisie, Mae, Madge, Margy (pronounced Mar-gee hard g), Margo, Molly, Ret/Retta.
I adore Edith! I don't think it charts currently, or at least not high, but I feel like as people start looking for older classic and vintage names that are alternatives to Evelyn that it may start to make a comeback. I also love Lydia (admittedly in part because of Beetlejuice lol) Lois, and Daphne!
I love Edith! Such a lovely choice. We have had it on our last. It charts at #473 right now in the US and I agree that it will start getting more usage with people looking for underused vintage named.
Ooh I’m a Bethany. Very rarely hear or see my name anywhere. My sister is Sophie and she was 1 of 5 in her year at school but I was one of very few Bethanys in the whole school. I’ve always gone by Bear though, it’s what my brother called me when I was born and it stuck 🐻
So funny, I'm Bethany and my younger sister is called naomi 😂😂 love that you mentioned them right after each other, made my ears prick up lol!! Great video!
My aunts name is Erin, my grandmothers name is Nancy, another Aunts name is Anne and my other grandmothers name is Edith. This list felt like hearing my family tree read out haha
I love this list so much 😭 Anne, Verity, Eve are among my all-time favourites. I think the name Magdalena also belongs on this list. Have recently fallen in love with it. Also may I say your living room in the background looks so cozy!!
I was not expecting my name to be the first! I love my name! Only have known one other Erin in my life, and throughout school, so it is pretty unique and not common. 10/10 recommend 👌
I’m a big movie fan like hardcore and my names for my kids are Hermione Hope (like Hermione granger) Renesmee River (like Renesmee Cullen) Luna Jean (like Luna Lovegood) Harry Finn (Like Harry Potter) and then just Noah Issac or maybe Noah Josh which is just a random one I like them all and can’t choose but I’ve got a LONG time to choose since I’m only 14
I taught siblings Ruby and Lois a few years ago and loved both their names. Unfortunately, in that year group there were 5 Rubys in total! Never, taught or met another Lois though. It really is a 'cool' name! Also, Edith is a beautiful name! Xx
My sisters name is ruby shes 20 now so not many people her age have the name, there’s 3 girls in my family and our names are Katie, Ruby and and Noelle. My mum always gets compliments on our three names
Please do a name list of geek/nerdy names. Sci-fi, fantasy, comic book, gaming, etc. Zelda Mary Jane Peach Laurel Thea Penny Bernadette But there are intimate amount of different names to choose from. I don't think you've done a list like this before.
Bethany here! Born 1982, go by Betty because people don't catch on to Bet or Annie - as much as I've tried. My mom named my younger sister Eliza, and neither of us loved being half of Elizabeth. I do get a lot of compliments from strangers about my name, but usually by Christians. It means house of poverty; Bethany was a poor town covered in fig trees which are strong smelling and handy for burials, like for Lazarus. All anointings are done in the name of Mary of Bethany (aka Mary Magdalene). Stephanie and Brittany are the names I get called when people mishear or misremember my full name.
I work in a nursery and Erin seems to be popular 3 or 4 years ago and we’ve had a Nancy,Annie and Amber in recent years like the last 2 or 3 years E girl names seem popular at the moment
In America, Stella, Erin, Margaret & one or two of the other names you mentioned are common. Also, Amber is usually associated with not the best, although I do know a few people with that name. I feel like a lot of the uncommon names are actually very common now and the 80s and 90s kids names are rare.
When discussing Annie on this list you mention how Hannah could also be listed. I dont know what its like in the UK but here on the West Coast of Canada Hannah is a super common name. My mum gave it to me in the late 80s thinking it was vintage and familiar but uncommon. By 1995 it was in the top 20 for girls in the province of British Columbia and has remained in the top 20 all the way from '95 to last year. We will see if it stays for 2021 too. I like my name regardless but I do remember being 12 years old and having so many 5 year olds running around with the same name.
My name is Annie and I’ve always liked that it was relatively unique but not weird. People always think I say “Amy” when I give my name (at Starbucks or something) so I always have to spell it or say “like the little orphan” lol
I am dying!! My name is Amber. My mothers name is Erin. My aunts name is Edith. 2 of my nieces are named Sadie and Lydia😂😂😂 This name list could be renamed “popular in the Deep South”
Lovely! So many names I love were on this list! Lydia, Naomi, and Bethany are on the top of my beautiful names list! I knew several Erins so it seems quite common to me, but It’s true that there aren’t many babies being given that name currently. I know this is an old video, but I enjoyed it anyway.
My mother named me unknowingly Ann Ann when she named me Nancy Ann. So in that misnamed tradition why not Nancianne ? My niece was just born and name Vivienne ( pronounced Vivian ) she was named for her grandmother Rosemary, Vivienne Rose.. What do you think of Vivian,? I love how you pronounce my name SJ. It gives it a soft edge to a happy sounding name. At least I think Nancy is cute, happy name. I was born in '47 and there were 4 Nancy's in my class so it wasn't so unique bur trendy as you said. Love your brown striped blouse. At least it looks Brow in my phone.
Absolutely love this list! Right up my street. I'm hopeful my eldest, Evelyn, will be called Eve as a nickname. And I've just had a Marianne, whi we call Annie day to day. Also had lydia and edith on my list. Love every name on this list! Need more children so I can use them.... maybe not 🤣 better get some pets
I had my daughter in February she’s Lilia which is a name that has a long history of usage especially across Eastern Europe but is super rare! Maybe Lilia could fit this vibe 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ I absolutely love love love Eve!!! If I was to ever be blessed with another daughter I would love to name her Eve 💕
We are expecting our first, a girl, in October and have chosen Lorraine. With so many old names as well as place names coming back into fashion I can't believe I haven't seen this one pop up on lists lately (but I am glad it is staying under the radar). We really love how nice the long form sounds, feminine but not super girly, and the huge variety of nicknames it provides.
I love this name too! I’m also so surprised that it hasn’t been coming up lately, but I’m glad it’s not! Definitely underrated for such a beautiful name
I quite like Nancy. Lydia is sweet, I also like Laetitia. Bethany is charming, I also like Bedelia. I keep expecting Lois to become really popular, it feels simple & classic. Verity is certainly distinctive I think I prefer the name Vera or even something like Valerie, meaning fierce. I will always be charmed by Daphne, my association is the film, Some like It Hot, I will always love the name because of it! Would Miriam or Maryam fit under the classic but uncommon banner?
I love Edith. It's from Downton Abbey and I love that. You could shorten it to Eddie, like the boy name. That's different and cute. Victorian and 20s names are so beautiful.
I’m Bethany Ann and I’ve always loved my name. It’s different enough that I was always the only Bethany in my class but everyone knows of the name. One of my gymnastics coaches used to call me Beth Annie which I also love. Though, working for customer service on the phones now I get called Stephanie, Brittany, and Ebony all the time.
There is a new makeup company based in London (opened in 2020) called *Lois Cosmetics!* And she has terrific eyeshadow palettes. So the name may gain popularity over her? Her palette "Meet Me in the Underworld" has sold out at least 3 times... so the company is getting really popular. :)
My great-gran was an Edith but hated it so much she went by Edna, which I find funny because I love Edith but not keen on Edna. And my Nan absolutely hates her middle name of Phoebe but i prefer it to her first name, Gillian. If I were ever to name daughters after them I'd have to go with the names they didn't like haha
