Mass enthusiasm for classic car trailers is yet to be a thing, apart from here at OCC HQ. Anything old, with wheels and/or an engine, is welcome here, and for many years car trailers from the 1920s through to the 1950s - ideally on spoked wheels for extra visual appeal - have been regular companions to our classic cars and associated things. Is a vintage trailer the ultimate accessory for an old car?
My first aged car trailer was, I think, a nifty little number from the 1930s sat on spoked wheels with a simple timber body designed to carry livestock. This was rescued in Staffordshire from an uncertain fate many years ago. A few others have come along over the years since.
This video looks at the two small car trailers we have here today, one a magnificent vintage Eccles trailer from the 1920s, the other an equally dashing "Pratt" trailer built in Yorkshire which could date from anywhere in the 1930s right through into the early 1950s. The former was saved from imminent destruction a few years back, while the latter trailer has been with us for 15-20 years or so now.
Incredibly both also have the original sales catalogues with them, and feature alongside the trailers themselves as this video rolls along. I also talk a little about trailer hitches, and period trailer accessories ...
Other fascinating content in this Old Classic Car video includes a fine 1940s battery charger that was recently donated to the garage, ponderings over an assortment of Jerry cans, and a neat bit of memorabilia with links to Morgan cars that has been stored in the vintage Eccles trailer for years.
While talking about classic trailers is not perhaps the most sought-out content on RU-vid, I like to feature things that interest me - hence the short video some time ago about the (admittedly very niche) hobby of collecting car spark plugs.

Always loved a trailer🤓 and always had one all my motoring days. Never thought to collect them🧐 first I remember was towed behind my father in his Riley Kestrel.

At Beaulieu auto jumble in the 70s when I started to attend, one would see all sorts of interesting trailers from the 40s 50s and even earlier. Not nowadays as such. Interesting video.

I can see a burly man working under clerestory windows in a noisy factory bead rolling those fenders working from a coil of fresh steel. Those trailers and the supporting documents are full of history and visions. Thanks Richard, you have once again stirred up feelings of having been born too late!

Hi Rick. Once again you’ve made me feel my age but in a pleasant way as I can remember these trailers doing regular duty around London with window cleaners and my mums chimney sweep once a year and the local allotment owners and the heavier versions as you showed were used by the gas and electric engineers. Thanks for a great little video. Mike 76 years young.😊

A man after my own heart. I rarely encounter anyone who goes down the wormhole of old automotive paraphernalia farther than I do; a jerry can collection is proof that you are a truly captured! It looks like young Harley is infected, as well. Bravo to you both! Keep posting on your adventures!

Excellent. The old trailers and the paperwork, very special. The Morgan too, pity it is not in BRG. I bought my grandsons the modern equivalent of a pedal car: a toy electric car modeled after a prewar Horch. Hopefully someone will still have that one in his/her shed in 20 years time or so.

You are definitely not the only person in the country who likes old trailers! I don’t know why I’ve always loved trailers, it seems like an odd thing to have any feelings about, but some of us do, I’m glad to say. Naturally I’m extremely jealous of your two lovelies! The little Dodge and Pilot definitely need towbars now!
@oldclassiccarUK

The pickup does have a towbar although it seems a bit overkill to tow a trailer unless the load area of the truck is already full (I need to sort out wiring too)

Ahh, the old charger hangs upside down because then you can access the 6v and 12v connections. At least, that is my guess...

very good video of the two trailers. Dont see many timber trailers around these days, I can remember seeing them in the 60's and a few in the 70's. All you get these days is poor quality chinese built tin trailers. Only a handfull of trailer makers legt in Australia.

That was fascinating ! Who knew old trailers would be so interesting. I suspect not many survive today, so their rareity makes them even more special. How fantastic to have the sales brochures too. As to Harleys Morgan, that really must be a rareity, and probably worth a fortune to a Morgan owner. Never seen one before. Thanks for this Rick - it was really interesting. I hope you manage to find an old Caravan one day to add to your collection. Take care 🙂

Hi Rick, I was surprised that there wasn't at least one military trailer as they seem to be everywhere in my life. Or maybe that's because of my military history.

A bit different but I found the subject really interesting, particularly as the Pratt trailer is the same age as me.
@stephenricketts7764
@stephenricketts7764 7 месяцев назад
Well that was different but interesting at the same time. It is not often that you see a classic car with a trailer hitched up to it. I think it's great that you have the original sales catalogues with photos! Even with some customer reviews, how quaint. We tend to think reviews are a more modern thing but not so. Like a number of things over the years trailer hitches seemed to differ between manufacturers and then somebody thought to make them a bit more standard. I loved Harley's Morgan pedal car and it is just like new. Maybe Morgan could give him some information on it if his Granddad doesn't have any or simply cannot remember? Thanks Rick for another great video. 👍👍

Thanks Stephen, it seems that these pedal cars were dreamt up by a Morgan dealer in Germany, a few made it over to the factory shop in Malvern and this is one of those.

You're not alone in liking old trailers. Would love to see a few at car shows instead of pimped up shiny chrome engine bays. Recognized the Eccles tailboard cast hinges, found a pair a few months ago at a car boot sale and they're now on a shed door !!. Im a bit like you, give me an empty shed and i'll fill it . Not that its for sale, but the Morgan pedal car would fetch a bob or two at a Goodwood Revival auction.

dangit, I have been ignoring the need for another trailer. Tip runs in the Standard 10 are a bit impractical even with the seat folded. I got rid of my last when the Wolseley went and I didn't need to cart stone about anymore.

I bet they were heavy without any load. Wood is heavy and the wheels look heavy. Still, cars were pretty slow in those days and people were not in such a hurry. Heavy interesting as trailers are pretty rare now. Builder etc. have pick up trucks or just big vans..

Probably on the pre-war trailers yes, by the 50s the type I have here would probably have been in use and as that's what I had to hand, that's what I fitted (for now at any rate). Thanks for watching.
