I'm so glad that RU-vid exists, so that no matter what interests you have, there are others who share it, and will be happy to view and even produce content that relates to them.
I feel that way too! I still can't get over the fact that I did what I did without knowing why! Really I did it just for fun, not knowing that the "fun" would lead to something on a grander scale that I never imagined back then. In 1970-NO RU-vid, and the internet was just for government use, explaining why none of us heard of it back then. How things have changed!! As long as my viewers keep showing interest, I'll keep producing!
Dolly says Thank You, Carl! But, yes, those were great days to be at Cass before they started changing the rules, like no more trips like ours. For me-looking back-I can't believe I hauled those huge cumbersome VHS cams around!! They (seemingly) weighed a ton and the picture was nothing to rave about! Still-I thought I was cool just to be able to get ahold of one!
Being part of a RU-vid channel myself where we document retail & shopping malls, I can truly relate to this from your description: "When I worked in a video store I would on occasion play these on the monitor-and get an occasional positive comment from customers, but that's about it. Outside of family and friends-who else is gonna watch? Looking back-glad I had the foresight to do what I did, even if I didn't know why I was doing it." I wish that there had been someone doing what you have been doing with trains and roadgeeking in our milieu of shopping malls for as many years. You go to even find a simple photo of a place like a store, or a mall you remember from your childhood, and... NOTHING. That's why our motto at our channel is "Document. Everything." For you never know when you might want to see it again, or when someone else, wanting to relive and reminisce about the past might want to do so vicariously through the work we're producing. Thank you, as always, for sharing your journeys, past & present, with the RU-vid community. We, your viewers, really appreciate what you are doing!
Thank You VERY much!! When I read your comment it really hit home! I've been (literally) documenting everything since first getting a wind-up movie camera in 1970, and have been taking motion-pictures of some kind ever since! Got sound movies in 1977 and began video in 1986...with rented VHS cams. The rest...as they say... Same story with still photos, by the way! Only difference-I started taking photos in 1965 at age 11. Most still look like the day I took 'em! As a result, I've got a bunch of stuff I've taken over the years/decades. I've got so much to go through! I have photos and movies of things like you spoke of. Fortunately my archival photos and footage are still in relatively pristine condition despite their age. I have a great scanner that does a great job on that old photographic material, but really should find someone who can digitize my old movies by converting them to a format I can work with (Windows Media, MP4 etc). If I can accomplish that...you're gonna see some really classic stuff! Got a movie and later video of a 2-lane highway that's now a 4-6 lane expressway! What a difference! I enjoy sharing when I've done with others, and knowing others appreciate my effort makes it all worthwhile. "Document Everything" is a great approach to me! Now that I know someone else agrees, I feel a lot better! Thank You again!
I really can't remember, as many different personnel have operated the trains over the years, including Artie and the Cassel brothers. Was great back then before all those cool people retired. Last saw Bud Cassel in October 2016 and we caught up on a few things. He appears in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KV1r6J9nrTE.html I thought Danny Seldomridge was pretty cool too!
Well...when B&O/C&O/WM merged into Chessie/CSX...guess you could say that! Only for a brief time, though-merged in 1980 but line abandoned in 1986, cutting Cass' outside connection.
It was October 1989. Here are a couple videos from what might be the last day: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YUF6T52WdjE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Euo0JxV6ShU.html
The line in front of the station is the ex-C&O Durbin Route, running from there south to Ronceverte WV. Tracks end at Cass; no track between Cass and Ronceverte. It's now a bike trail (vid posted), and a very scenic one at that.
It's the ex-C&O line that I was referring to, though there is a WM line that's also a trail. Here's the C&O: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G2-JW5vD-T0.html
