As an Italian who knows very well Benigni, I think Letterman had fun and handled Benigni very well, and they played together, and the result is sooooo funny!

non sono d'accordo nei modi, poteva fare benigni per i primi 2 minuti per rompere un po il ghiaccio e far capire a Dave che se voleva avrebbe potuto continuare, ma poi avrebbe dovuto parlare dei suoi interesi di chi e' lui veramente, non ha niente in meno di Dave, anzi, pero' ricordati che sei ospite, e che le buone maniere le conosci, mettere i piedi dove si sono sedute tutte le star degli ultimi 30 anni, secondo me e' una mancanza di rispetto e non fa ridere.

@@mehran7449 I cannot say anything clear about him because I don't know him personally, however, I suppose that his image declined when he took around 500.000 euros just to appear few minutes on public TV which is called RAI. That TV is paid with public Italian tax and basically he has been paid that fortune with Italian people's money that struggle to pay national debt or pay people's home after the several earthquakes we had. To be socialist, left wing and take those money is not really a good example. For the rest...of course he's a big actor and his movies are great. Moreover, I don't know if he privately does some charity to poor people, so I cannot say anything totally sure

This is exactly how the Italians I met in Rome and Florence were like. They might know 500 english words but just go on with this energy and physical interaction that keeps you cracking up all night.
He is not a normal man he is more like a comedy genius. In fact he is trolling so hard in the show and in all the other interviews. He can quote you Mark Twain and Dante Alighieri in the same sentence, but he acts like he is dumb. In every american appearance he rides those italian stereotypes and exaggerates them. He shouts, he touches people and he speaks with this heavy accent that make him look dumb. The sad thing is that many times people don't undertand it and make fun of him while he is secretly making fun of them.
Why are american so schematic and "robotics" to schematize the reality?? Everything is reduced to a number, to a rank, to a challenge!! What does it mean "the funniest man in italy?!?!?" . The peculiarity of benigni,like many other famous charters in italy (as paolo villaggio for example) is a mixture between comic and satyrical...it is an art, it is not just a matter of "telling jokes and make the people laught"...it is something deeper... why, americans? why is your brain so full of fixed schemes and rankings???

it's ludiscrously fun when he told he was from Zurich and Letterman knew he was joking but his audience did not simply because most americans have no idea where Zurich is. despite looking like a clown he actually clowned everyone

Totally. Poor downer Dave. No fun Dave. Even Dave's introduction is scripted. He wants to go by the book. Benigni is free form, spontaneous. beautiful. Dave is all "dont do that. don't do that. sit down, shut up. Let me interview you." Dave says, "tell a joke." (It's over Dave's head from the beginning.) Benigni's joy is sheer art. "Don't hug me. Don't hug me." (Dave brushes the cooties off his jacket, straightens the wrinkles out.) Poor Dave, did he upstage you?
Oh! His love for English idioms! That's the way the cookie crumbles! He also loved, "Not enough room to swing a cat." He IS so funny. He looks at a common talk show that says, 'this is the way we do it' and then proceeds to do everything WRONG! You gotta love that.

@TheAngelOfSuperDeath No non penso... è che benigni ha una comicità tipicamente italo-toscana, fisica, caricaturale, una comicità fatta di gesti, movimenti e variazioni di tono..Letterman invece secondo me ha un umorismo all'inglese, di lui fà ridere il distacco quasi cinico , come se la battuta non la stesse facendo lui.modera linguaggio e comportamento..ed è questa la comicità più adeguata per un presentatore. Quando due personalità come le loro si scontrano succede il finimondo.

Benigni is the ultimate troll. With an intelligence, wit and depth that is rarely matched. He acts the part of the fool because that's what true intelligence is like: being able to live as a kid, with the wits of an adult.

Does everyone seriously not realize that Letterman was just kidding when he said "Get away from me"... he wasn't mad at Benigni he was joking around trying to be funny, as was Benigni...
Letterman had a big ego back then and when Benigni didn't even pay him any attention in the entrance he took it as a slight and was trying to get to him from there on.

'What an ass' is a little tough. Letterman was clearly uncomfortable, and I'm surprised that he wasn't more easy rolling, but Letterman is an amazing guy and a cultural icon, and perhaps you might consider some of that hard won reality before tipping him into the ashcan.

both are great! benigni is at his top. letterman is great too, otherwise it wouldn't been so fun. As you can see from 6:20 on. But there are roberto's classic pieces that just can't be translated. just like "inno del corpo sciolto".
ROFL!!!! First time I saw this even though I knew Benigni very well from Italia, but most foreigner struggle to understand his kind of comedy, very personal natural and... phisical and quite Italian. Grande Roberto!!!
He just silently joked so much about the ignorance of Americans regarding the rest of the world, geographically and culturally... and so few understood it. People laugh to what sounds like no sense, but many would surely be pissed off understanding the fooling to the average American he is doing...
To be fair to Letterman he is supposed to be a "foil" a "straight man" for the sake of the joke. The joke results from the awkward tension created in Letterman's style. He's interviewed Benigni several times and they make for some great TV moments, that tension has a purpose. He's also supposed to be a little rude or insulting as that is part of the American stand up style from which Dave comes.

at 7:11 thats most rude thing i have ever seen on any tonight show!!! on the side note remembering conan being so nice to roberto and david was so uptight and distant. so sad... no wonder he had triple bypass surgery, he had a cold heart.
