Classic Game Room HD reviews DEMON'S SOULS for Playstation 3! This PS3 exclusive release is one of the best games of 2009. Hack and slash your way through Boletaria with your hero. This CGR review of Demon's Souls has gameplay from Demon's Souls showing PS3 game play of Demon's Sould being played on Playstation 3. Published by Atus, Demon's Souls is immersive, complex and amazingly detailed. Demons Souls gameplay is traditional 3D brawling, hacking and slashing and rolling style game play with some awesome weapons and magic.
King Allant the XII, the last king of Boletaria, searched tirelessly to expand his might. The Nexus, a great ice shrine nestled in the mountains, bestowed the power of the souls onto him, bringing prosperity to his kingdom. Still unsated, he returned again to the Nexus, where he foolishly awakened the Old One from its eternal slumber. This long forgotten evil, now wrought upon Boletaria, plunged the realm into darkness and fog. A mighty demon horde poured into the kingdom, devouring the souls of men.
Champions from other realms learned of Boletaria's fate and sought to deliver the kingdom from evil; none would return from the cursed land. Called upon by a mysterious maiden in black, you go forth, the last hope for humanity in a place lost to demons and darkness...

I love the fact that Mark pretty confidently says 'this is the game everyone will be talking about'. Here I am, 6 years later, jost bought a copy, played 3 hours and fell in love with the game. Best thing I played since Diablo 1 back in 1997.

I love Mark's laid back, down-to-earth approach to video-game reviewing. You've got to respect the fact that even though he isn't all that great at Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, he can still give the series the credit it is due - a quality that seems absent in many people these days.

I feel that the dark souls estus system would have benefited this game better than its original inclusion in dark souls. Since the game punishes you with death by making you start from the beginning of a level (ontop of halving your health) it would seem fair of them to refresh your methods of healing, so that it wouldn't punish you with grass grinding and instead encourage you to get better and use your estus more strategically while playing through a stage.

I haven't been this engrossed in a game since Zelda ocarina which happens to be my favorite game of all time. If it wasn't for nostalgia these souls games would be #1 lb 4 lb ranked

Hey 5 years later I know, but Shields take off the Fun of the game, why Dodge and learn the boss If you can hold L1 and defend, I recommend to play without It, It's much more fun.

Back in 2013, I stumbled upon this review. I was exploring the library for my brand new PS3. Never heard of this franchise back then, but the name "Demon's Souls" sounded so cool to me and the gameplay, concepts and atmosphere presented in this review really caught my interest. This felt like a modern day NES game somehow. Made me think of Ghost n' Goblins and Demon's Crest style wise. 9 years later I still play this series almost daily. You can't help but being immersed in the beautiful areas and the online play of the Souls games. Thank you, Classic Game Room for introducing me to Demon's Souls and the games that followed.

I just love Dark Souls, to me the beginning part where you have to ring the bells basically up until you get to Anor Lando is so relaxing and a blast to play. I wish my Ps3 hadn't crapped out before I knew this gem existed 😭

I just started this game. I played about 5 hours before beating the first level. And I'll tell you, when I did, it was the most victorious I have ever felt in any video game. This is an epic, intense, one-of-a-kind game and I LOVE it.

there is a developer message tells you that world 2 enemies are susceptible to pierce attacks at the first stairs at the beginning of the level, (world), it doesn't matter, it is old game, and the review is old, so just forget what I said, just talking to my self.

Acrobat Old king doran would like to have a word with you lol. The game gets a lot harder with pure black world tendency and some of the NPC black phantoms are brutal. I feel that the environments are harder than most of the bosses imo with a couple exceptions.

Demon's Souls reminded me of why I'm not a fan of RPGs. Although I was able to play this game longer than Elder Scrolls Oblivion which was a bore fest.

I wonder if Mark still plays this game. Its excellent. I actually bought my PS3 for this game and a few others of course, but this is the 1st game I have bought for my Playstation 3, and remains my most played at least until Mag comes out, I just loved that game.

I actually liked it, he shows nice high quality gameplay, no quick montages, he just talks about it in a very normal human tempo there's no rattling involved. I prefer this type of review over any professional one anyday ^^

@CrimsonFyre I use an arcade style joystick for fighting games for the exact reason you're listing. I've played Demon's Souls a lot and still occasionally make the healing mistake. Usually happens when I haven't played in awhile and come back to it. Once you get the hang of the controls, it's definitely loads of fun. By the 2nd or 3rd playthrough you'll make your character look like this medieval badass.

One of my favourite games on the PS3. If you can get through the first 2 or so levels without giving up already you will get used to the game and become a total addict like me and many others. I nearly finished my second plythrough and I still have alot of character builds and secrets to try.

I've been playing this game for almost a month now. Reached soul level 44 and killed all the first level Bosses (The're real easy to kill), but man are the rest of the bosses time consuming. This game is awesome. It's only hard if you act reckless and try to rush through it, but if you take it slow and play safe you'r going to make it eventually. I suppose it's all about how much time you put into it. Wish I had more of that. :P

@CrimsonFyre The gameplay and controls are complex. You can't just map everything to the R1 and L1. R1 is right hand, L1 is left hand. R2 is stronger right hand, L2 is stronger left hand. So if you have a specific shield + sword combo, you may shield bash with L2 or just block with L1. R1 for quick slash and R2 for deep thrust. If you don't wanna use back triggers a mage build works so maybe you'd L1 to block and R1 to cast.

This game is hard, but I think a lot of people overstate how hard it is. It starts out very frustrating, but once you start to learn the intricacies, you'll actually find it fairly easy. You do get a great sense of having "mastered" the game.

@drkratchet, All I know is that players that start out as melee only hate it later on. So any ranged is a good class to start with. Then later you can try a melee class.

Does this game go online? I'm getting a PS3 early next year, and I have to know if this game is online-only or not. I want to be able to buy it without having to worry about the servers possibly shutting down from what I've heard. Single player at least would be fine.

@P1n0iGam3rS: Yeah. It's open world. There are five main sections of Boletaria (the game's setting). Each main section has 3-4 subsections. You're free to explore them in any order you wish, and what you do in any section can effect your experiance in other sections. -The online is great too. Beware of false messages... You can invade, or be invaded, at any time, and that can effect the rest of your game.

The archstone (Arthurian "rock with sword in it") is always there, but if you leave and return every enemy previously killed is respawned, an exception are the bosses. You usually get another archstone further in the level after you kill a boss.

Finally! I've manage to find this game for my collection. Now I have all three games, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 & 2. I'm very happy, because I am a new fan of this game series. I do have a video plan for these three games, now that I have them & I can play them.

@Verthel123 Though the online bits are definitely clever, I don't expect to miss them much. I know this isn't likely, but I actually hope they implement a pause feature whenever they kill the servers, since the only thing stopping them from having one before was the online element. I know it's a long shot, but being able to pause is always mighty convenient.

You know what I find funny about this game? People always mention the difficulty but so few actually mention the reward and that hook that buries itself so deep within and invigorates you to keep on going. The game has a learning curve I don't deny that but not once did I ever find death in this game to be cheap or disheartening because the game does such a great job conditioning you for adventure. I'd almost say you don't need a guide to complete it though if you want to get the beginners tips it sure as hell wouldn't hurt. Fantastic game, don't be afraid to approach this one folks.

I actually bought this game when it released and chose it over Dragon Age. I died a bit but mostly to unlock events. I have to say this was my favorite game on the PS3. Once I got everything I stop dying intentionally and just kept owning. My favorite part was parrying the enemy. The boss battles were good too. I didn't use PvP too much because people would rage quit and that got annoying. I wish they bring this to the PS Vita with improvements!

My only question is this. How is the sword combat and is it authentic? I love authentic sword games. My favorite sword games are bushido blade for the ps1 and both assassins creed sword gameplay. They are the most authentic sword play. Is this game sword gameplay in any way similar to the two mention above or is it awesome? To those who really have played the games I mentioned please provide an honest answer because this game seems very interesting. It's the year of singleplayer games for me.

My one and only gripe with this game is you should be able to upgrade your armor oh and a sequal and or dlc they could have custom paint armor stuff like paint it or change details to add some variety.

@AudioCorps thats why there is two ways of defense, your better off using both, you can still have light armor and a shield. but i'm fairly sure you can dodge spears...

to anyone just starting this game, my advice is to be a temple knight. you get a halberd, which is amazing for crowd control in the beginning of the game. also, start ASAP because the servers are pure white (easiest game setting and super weapons and rare people pop up everywhere) for the next week or so.

I'm close to finishing this game, it taken me nearly 40 hours! I made a lot of silly mistakes in the beginning, that's the most hardest part is starting out. Although this game is unforgiving, once you get going you feel like you gain skill and that makes you feel like a bad ass. Also other players around the world can invade your game, you will have the greatest satisfaction slaying them and taking all there souls :) This is the best game on the PS3 of 2009, without a doubt.
