This is the hardest Mario Kart, can't believe you didn't bring up the BS that the computer can use special moves when ever they want lol

I have almost as much nostalgia for old CGR as I do for MK.

I like how every kart has its unique sound when they pass you by.

It is nice to see an older intro once in a while. This game was a most excellent start to the Mario Kart franchise.

something that always bothered me is that mario & luigi ALWAYS have a star ready to use when you're close. it's not very difficult to avoid, but lol it's so cheap.

Some of my best gaming memories were me and my mates sitting around a little TV playing multiplayer Mario Kart and Street Fighter II.

2 player Mario kart with an equally skilled player is one of the best experiences on the snes.

I always felt bad when this game was shown in that blast processing sega commercial. This game is amazing!

One thing I love about the original Super Mario Kart that I don't recall them doing with any of the later games is the unique victory themes for each character during the end-of-race score tallies. i always thought that was a great little touch to have in the game.

This game doesn't have blast processing. Which is a shame because this game could have been FASTER!!!

Coins are back in Mario Kart for Wii U. Mario Kart 8 has it. Mario Kart 7 on 3DS also has it.

This is the best game for buddies of all time. I have played no other game that often for so long as this game. I guess I have played it regulary for around 10 years.

This cute girl was looking for Super Mario Kart at my local game pawn shop. I had it and I was about to offer it to her. The she called her boyfriendm I immediately left the store.

This feels like an old review. No gimmicks just a straight forward one. It was a refreshing change. I do like Mark's quirky sense of humor but it's been really amped up these years.

What makes this game the best is the technical nature of the L/R jump-drifting required to really maintain your speed. It was still an important part of Mario Kart 64, but was watered down after that to the point of irrelevance. If you wanted to win in this game, you needed to drift through the turns.

I grew up with this game as a kid. The best battle mode is in this one. The way it's supposed to be. It's not about getting points. It's about blowing up all their balloons to win.

Koopa Beach's theme is so good.

I'm surprised he didn't do a segment on the amazing story line in this game.

Damn it's been a while since I've seen this review. This is what got me into playing the first Mario Kart. Didn't regret it.

this one and double dash for the game cube was my favorite and in close 3rd is mariokart 64. I think the 64 one stands out for me cause I remember playing it on a 120 inch projection screen with 4 players when it was fairly new. I never owned the Nintendo 64 and that was my only time I played mariokart 64 but that night was the first time I drank liquor and my 1st time I seen a game played on That big of a screen. now it is normal to have big screens but back then, my parents had the biggest screen of any of my friends did and that was only a 27 inch. lol. great review. I didn't realize that coins made you go faster. I beat the original many of times to. I know if you have no coins that you spin around everytime someone hits you.

I still can't believe how much more complex Super Mario Kart was compared to later versions!

Mark, I really think you should check out Mario Kart 8. It fixes many of the issues you have with newer MK games, like bringing back coins, and bringing back the difficulty. The tracks don't necessarily get as hard as in Super MK, but the inclusion of 200cc fixes that with a neon cyborg wrench from space. Also, the DLC is incredible, being some of the most well produced DLC I have ever seen in a video game. The characters handling doesn't differ as much like in Super MK, but the kart customization also fixes that a little bit. Plus it's fun as hell. Loved the review, glad you finally picked up this "obscure gem."

I have this game I'm 15 and my older siblings had an original SNES we still have it works super good and I started playing video games on a SNES

Not sure why you didn't mention the perfect start to the race the player can make. It's basically the mushroom power up, where you press the acceleration just as the second red light is due to go out and BOOM you're in first place or near enough any way. I used to be a speed runner at this game and super Mario world before there was such a thing

Also this is available on the Wii U with the Virtual Console for a few bucks. Not as cool as owning the original cart (I have a boxed copy) but still great to be able to play it via a HDMI hook up on your new flash telly! Buy it for the Bowser Castle music alone.

Wow, thanks for this insightful video, Mark. I actually heard that they made numerous sequels for this "Mario Kart". I guess it was successful enough to fund sequels, but how come I never heard of this magical little game series? They must have barely been making it. In all seriousness thuogh, original Mario Kart is fantastic, and despite its age still proves to be one of the best playing games of the series. Great tracks and courses, battle mode, etc. I actually prefer the smaller courses of this game to the later games with these huge courses they have now. Without a doubt the most successful "spinoff" franchise Nintendo's ever made, heck if I'm not mistaken Mario Kart on Wii actually outsold Super Mario Brothers on the Wii.

A true 16bit Classic which wonderfully showed off the capabilities of the SNES.

I have the 64, DS, and Wii versions. I was introduced to the franchise through the 64 game.

The first Mario kart has lots of great features coins, no blue shell and no catch up! Yes it's actually a proper racing game!

This one and Super Circuit on GBA are my 2 favourite Mario Kart games, they're awesome! There's something so charming about the flat mode 7 tracks~ They have a sense of speed that is missing in the 3D ones, especially the GBA one, I have a lot more fun with the SNES and GBA Mario Kart games than any other in the series...

That cartridge label needs a little bit of black marker on the top and it will look a lot better.

I really love Super Mario Kart was my number 1 favorite SNES Game of all-time that I play so much when I was a 7 years old child since 2008 also I love the Play Choice Release or Edition. And now I have it on SNES Classic Mini

I have heard that a worker spent a morning playing this game(either this one or 64) and got fired for not showing up for work.

They really should had kept the coins. They do make for an interesting dynamic to the game.

You can get this game on the New 3DS now. I never had a Super NES so this is good for me.

The original, most balanced. best musically scored, charming and all round greatest, in both single and various multiplayer modes. It's a joy to go through - whizzing through the early cups, unlocking other modes and courses. I remember being pretty disappointed with the N64 sequel and have mixed but mostly positive thoughts about a lot of the ones that have come since.. but this magnificent masterpiece really can't be touched. Mario Kart 8 is all kinds of wow but after a session on that this still packs tighter thrills and laughs. I tend to play as Toad, and in his games you can tell Bowser and Princess are having an affair with the way they act towards eachother. The general personality overload Super Mario Kart helps secure its position as one of the very greatest videogames ever produced. I too didn't play it first time around - it lacked the futuristic wow and speed of F-Zero and seemed a bit, well childish compared to Sega action games and things like Gunstar Heroes but I got into it *hard* 5-6 years after its release, becoming a time trail and GP expert. Man I can't express how much I love this bloody game. Great review, looking forward to the takes on a couple of the others, thank you!

I find this to be the best single player MK game, there's less random bullshit like in the new ones, like a blue shell coming from the back and taking you out when you're in first. To win at this game you need to get good and learn how to properly handle the tracks.
