Classic Game Room - VECTREX MULTI-CART review 

How ingenious. As a child I was also the proud owner of a Vectrex. It always reminded me of Tron. Back then everything was better, even the future.

I love the look of the Vectrex. It can get so much done with just some lines on a black screen. I love how they glow and leave trails on the screen as well. Very appealing to the eyes.

This console is kinda appealing. The way the graphics are designed... Kinda cool

God I love the Vectrex! It feels ahead of its time. I need more of these reviews in my life.

A cartridge that holds every vectrex game released. I think Mark has entered his happy place. All that's missing is burning people with monsters and cutting them in half.

this thing is amazing. surprised i never ran into one as a teen working a Goodwill, and no one my older brothers knew in the early 80s had one when we were growing up.

I love that someone made a multi-cart for the Vectrex. I suppose they expanded the ROM space or whatever you call it to do it. It is definitely a convenience to have a collection of games to play on one cartridge, and saves you money too. Getting those overlays though might be a bit harder. lol

This is pretty darn sharp. I remember seeing one for sale back then but they really weren't promoted much at all. I can't recall seeing any commercials for it.

The Vectrex was amazing. It used a Vector CRT which is why it didn't have any pixels compared to its peers. If only they'd used a colour display - but I suppose there must've been cost issues. Technically, this would've been the only machine able to provide perfect home versions of the Atari Vector CRT arcade games like Battlezone, Star Wars, Empire, Tempest etc. Just goes to show that the best and most innovative hardware doesn't always win or receive the recognition it deserves.

I think what you need is Truxton on the vectrex being played with a Sega genesis controller

Those graphics are really quite impressive, especially considering the era.

Seriously, this is waaay more impressive graphically than something like the Atari 2600. I mean look at how smoothly things move in a game like Pole Position here, and how clean the scaling of the cars is. I'm amazed this machine flopped back in the day: It had its own built-in screen, which is just visually mesmerizing, an actually pretty cool controller as well, and when used properly can produce some really nice vector graphics, including stuff that can be pretty convincingly like actual 3D too. This would have utterly blown me away back in the day, and far more so than stuff like the Tomytronic 3D toys that I actually thought were pretty cool too.

I love how you just keep a Vectrex list. Its very handy.

god i love vector displays - used to love playing the Star Wars Arcade machine with the vector display...

Glad to see Mark going back to some of the old games. For a while there, he was only doing new ones. And he's pretty much neglected the SNES and the 32 bit consoles at this point, LOL

From what I hear, the console's visuals looks even better in person than on a video.

Man, the frame rate and vector graphics in Pole Position must be very impressive for Vectrex! That is an excellent port!

@19psi With a vector monitor, you only have to enter he start and end coordinates of a line; the monitor then draws the rest of the line.

the thing that impresses me about the vectrex is its ability to scale graphics... consoles were not able to do this until the super nes came out with mode 7 several years later..

Actually I saw some vectrex footage before CGR and I always thought.. hey! that game console isn't that bad! but CGR confirmed me that the Vectrex is actually awesome.

Glad I bought my 2 Vectrex units ~20+ years ago, along with an original Sean Kelly Muticart ;) The prices are out of control nowadays YEs, only cost effective way to have a real vector monitor based multi-mini-cabinet

@RareAspie It is the same tube technology called a vector display. That's why they named it the Vectrex. Read about the display tech on Wikipedia.

@ps3pitos an overlay is a cute little thing you put over your screen to give it more style.

cool, that's the same multicart that I bought many years ago along with the Vec system directly from Sean Kelly (of Kelly & Taft fame!). I love StarFire on the vec and you will too if you like Star Wars The Arcade Game.

Actually I really totally love those vector based graphics. I'm thinking about getting a Vectrex right now :)

Great cart. I have 2.0 of Sean Kelly's Multicart. It adds quite a few home brew titles. I was successful in printing out my own overlays with some cheap overhead film, but they weren't perfect.

I'd love to see a modern interpretation of a vector based game using all the power of the modern consoles.

those old school graphics of this system is amazing i cant immagine seeing this for first time in 1982 specially that racing game. I like this look way better than stupid artari pixels

Vectrex is awesome, but one day, I want to make a game console that has a separate vector monitor and plays arcade perfect games. I would call it, the Vectrex 2!

I agree with both the comments below mine. The 360 bash was a bit low, but hey, the truth hurts. And yes it's called CLASSIC game room for a reason. Nice review btw mark, I love these collection reviews.

@10p6 How does the vector monitor do all the work vs. a raster monitor? Atari has a 6507 @ 1.19mhz and 128 BYTES of memory. Vectrex has 68A09P @ 1.5mhz and 1KB of memory.

@TechnoEstate Yes! Both machines were massively ahead of their time and suffered the misfortune of poor marketing and being released at crucially bad moments.

I've got this cartridge but I haven't figured out how you can get out of a game and go back to the menu to select another yet. I have to turn the entire machine off just to play a different game. How can you play others without turning off the machine?

Dude what have we been doing for the past ten years? These graphics completely defeat the xbox one and only if you have a computer will you perhaps be able to run these games in fifteen years from now. Truly Mark, you're lucky.

The difficulty of that would be the fact that Vector CRT technology hasn't come extremely far due to lack of research.

that cartridge was made in 99, the console and some of the games on the cartridge are from 82

You've pretty much convinced me I need to purchase a vectrex. Have you had any issues with your unit? I'm worried about putting down $250 for one only to have it break a couple a weeks later, is it pretty sturdy/good quality or made cheaply?

My better halves brother's vectrex is stashed away in his daughter's attic. I keep hinting that it needs some Danny love but they live darn sarf and we're oop noorf so getting it up here in one piece would be a nightmare. I love the vector display. Even the reflections around the screen border look sexy
