CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Directed and starring the great Orson Welles, this Film Noir suspense story tells the tale of a Nazi hunter played by Edward G. Robinson -- in a role Welles originally created for Agnes Moorehead -- who follows a lead, which lands him in a small town in New England. Unbeknownst to the local inhabitants, a war criminal is in hiding. Played by Welles, it is Eddie Gs job to convince Welles wife, Loretta Young, that her newly married spouse is a notorious Nazi. Taut, intelligent and spine tingling - THE STRANGER (1946).

Even more than "Touch Of Evil", "The Stranger" is my FAVORITE Orson Welles film! Just about perfect in every way. Hell, I could listen to Robinson and Welles read the phone book for an hour and a half and be entertained let alone such dialogue as they have here. And that climax! It gives me chills every time. Thanks so much for giving "The Stranger" some well deserved recognition.

The mesmerizingly beautiful young Richard Long is flawlessly cast as Loretta Young's kid brother. Welles was a fan of Long and had just appeared with him in a Claudette Colbert movie.

"The Stranger" is one of the great Orson Welles and Loretta Young's films not well known to most people. A favorite of mine for many years now. Edward G.Robinson and the entire cast is great not to forget the production standards in the film. A shame such a great film is pushed into the background, especially with its' Film Noir" style. I rarely even see this exceptional film even listed as "Film Noir".

Dear Steve, I'm so glad and so grateful to you for reviewing this film, which I think is all too often overlooked. Everybody talks endlessly about "Citizen Kane" (and here I have a terrible confession - I'm not mad about that film and much prefer others of Welles) but "The Stranger" fascinates me. I admire Edward G. Robinson and Welles enormously, and Loretta Young looks beautiful (do you think somebody told her "Carthaginian" was slang for an obscene sexual position?). Robinson and Welles are two brilliant actors who clearly respect one-another, and that lends weight to the whole film. Just a few days ago on British television they screened an old interview with Welles, when he had become elderly and vast but amiable, and he wouldn't talk about any of his own films, but spent ages raving about James Cagney. Thank you again for a lovely review of a fascinating film which I love as I love "The Third Man". Very best wishes, Alida

Dear Alida; I love this opne too. Originally, he wanted Agnes Moorehead for the Robinson role, but the studfio demanded that he get a bigger star, so he get a male star with a bigger box office draw. Since he was trying to redeem himself and get back in good graces with the studio by proving he could turn out a commercioal film , he played ball and got Robinson...who, of course, did a terrific job. The stanger is my favorite Welles film, not just because it's an expert thriller, but Welles was brave enough to put actual concentration camp footage into a mainstream Hollywood film. So brave! I also feel that Loretta Young was one of the most versatile and underrated actresses of the Golden Age. She was gorgeous, but it took her TV show to prove what a talented actress she was. In fact, as you probably know, she was down to wire to get the lead in "Rebecca", but in the end, Selznick felt she was simply too beautiful. However, he remained her champion and recommeneded her to Dore Shary when Ingrid Bergman refused to do " The Farmer's Daughter". Saying something to the effect that he had long thought of her as one of the most talented and underrated actrresses in Hollywood and that she would bring alot to the project and surprise everyone. Which of course, at Oscar time the following year, she did. Hope this finds you well and enjoying the Autumn weather. Best Wishes; Steve

I love this movie, everyone I talk to about classic movies have never even heard of this movie. Everyone thinks of "Lady from Shanghai" or "Citizen Kane" but I think outside of his role of Harry Lime in "The Third Man" this is my favortie role of his.

I agree. Sadly, most of the copies are scratchy. I have over 1,000 movies including the VHS and DVDs. Thornfield manor (My apartment) is rather "brimming" with movies and memorabilia. As an ex of mine once commented; "You know Steven, you live here too!" ...Which probably explains why he's an "Ex". Thanks for your wonderful comments and have a great holiday season! OXOX Steve

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ are you familiar with Joan in " Rain" from 1932? It stiff baffles me to this day as to why she didn't take Oscar home for that alone! Don
@STEVEHAYESTOQ
@STEVEHAYESTOQ Год назад
@@donspringstead1649 Ironic. "Rain" bombed when it opened. At the height of the Depression, her fans loved it when she was a shop gilr from the wrong side of the tracks working her way up to respectability, but they didn't want her to play an out and out prostitute. Crazy morality. No less than three years later, Bette Davis broke that taboo with her blistering Mildred in " Of Human Bondage".

Hi Hon; Written On The Wind along with three other Douglas Sirk movies, is on The CRITERION Label. I don't know if you get those in the UK. Go on line and look up The CRITERION Collection. And thanks for the offer to "sell your soul", you not only made my day, but made me blush and breathe hard at the same time. Happy Holidays! Gratefully; Steve OXOXO OXOXOX!!!

TOUCH OF EVIL isn't noir? Both movies were photographed by Russell Metty, who shot most of Douglas Sirk's films.

Another classic which i copied off YT a few months ago. Not the best quality, but nice to have a copy anyway. All the DVD versions that i've seen seem to be the same dire low quality too. Another film with the same problem is ONE EYED JACKS with Marlon Brando. Great film, poor quality :-(
