What a coincidence Steve! I have spent hours today watching some of the old What’s My Line? shows from the 50s and 60s. One of the mystery guests was Betty Grable. That episode was from the mid 1960s, and she was still a very attractive lady. Cheers

We did. I finally traveled and saw friends and family and shot new episodes of TOQ. Johnny got to perform in "King Lear" and "The Tempest" at The Utah Shakespeare festival. A good summer all around! Thanks for watching! best; Steve

Thanks for honoring Miss Grable, Steve. Your Eugene Pallette is awesome. Post WW2, my mom was a refugee in Germany and saw imported Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth musicals. She always loved them and after coming to the US, watched them on TV. They were like old friends to her. When I was a teen, I thought the musicals were hokey. Once I hit my 40s, I realized how they helped my mom cope with PTSD from her wartime experiences.

What a heart wrenching and fascinating anecdote about your dear mother. Thank you for sharing it. I'm so glad she found some solace in these movies. We have no idea of the harrowing experiences the survivors of WW2 went through. I'm so glad you have come to realize and identify with, what your mother got from these films. Betty Grable is wonderful! Recently heard a nice story of Marilyn doing publicity shots on HTMAM set and photographer wanted Marilyn to pose in front of Betty Grables dressing room door. (as in "in with the new") Marilyn refused and said I wouldn't like anyone doing that to me! Also during filming Grable's kid was ill at some point and Betty tells of only Marilyn calling her at home in concern

As soon as I am notified, I'm watching Steve Hayes. I, too, love Betty Grable. Her films were escapism and still are. If you're bored or down, Betty will get you going again. The Eugene Pallette impression is not only rare but pitch perfect. I wonder if you've seen Martha Raye's number called "Mamma." It's awesome--and a little wild for the times.

My favorite Martha Raye number is called " Watch The Birdie" from "Hellzapoppin'" it's on RU-vid. I watch it whenever I'm a bit blue and it perks me up and lodges in my head for days' Love this lyric's : "Lookin for a tall dark handsome man, with eyes of blue, a golden tan. Strong white teeth like Joel McCrea, hey you, will you get outta' the way!" LOVE HER! Steve

I loved your review of "Pin Up Girl." When my son was very young, he loved watching Betty Grable movies, and his favorite singing group was the Andrews Sisters! You're right about the origin of her famous pin-up photo, so here's a fun fact: Betty Grable was also pregnant during the shooting of this film. Her pregnancy is definitely noticeable in the final number of the movie. Thank you once again for your enjoyable content!

Sorry. You're kinda wrong. Betty Grable was Not pregnant in that famous Pin Up photo. That was taken in 1943. Betty Was pregnant during the making of Pin Up Girl 1944. It was noticeable toward the end of the movie. I am something of an expert on Grable. And my cousins uncle has one of the biggest Grable collectons in the world. He's gone now but the pregnancy thing came up. The photo was taken during Sweet Rosie O'Grady 1943. Betty found she was pregnant during the filming of Pin Up Girl in 1944. Happy Holidays.

@@dpf5939 Greetings to you, you might be right about the pin-up photo if it was taken prior to late May of 1943, since Betty's oldest daughter, Victoria James, was born March 3, 1944. In the meantime, this is one of my favorite Betty Grable films, along with "I Wake Up Screaming" and "Moon Over Miami." What are your favorites?

@@wfoster-graham6363 I've seen all her movies at Fox from 1940 to 1955. Some of my favorites are two you mentioned, Moon over Miami and I Wake up Screaming. Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Mother Wore Tights, When my Baby Smiles at Me and Wabash Avenue are some more favorites. There are a few though that weren't on my list of faves. Shocking Miss Pilgrim, That Lady in Ermine and How to be Very,Very Popular to name a few. I always post on FB news feed every year when it's her Birthday. I'm still a fan.

What a wonderful way to bring this summer to a close, another great Steve movie post❤️ If ever there was a face made for technicolor it was totally Betty’s! This movie was always a treasure, and I enjoy it whenever it’s on TV. Another favorite BG film of mine is That Lady in Ermine, another beautiful technicolor feast for the eyes. Oh, hello Steve! I very much enjoy your movie reviews - and especially loved seeing our Betty in the spotlight. A very dear (now passed) friend of mine was a lounge pianist in Las Vegas (and Reno) during the early to late -1960's. He was wonderfully good at what he did (sang as well) and met countless celebrities during his years in Nevada. I absolutely loved hearing his stories, but the one thing he told me (which I never forgot) was that Betty Grable was the nicest and most down-to-earth celebrity he ever met. My friend was incredibly witty and used to make up lyrics as he went along. Betty loved it and visited often - she (at the time) was going through a very nasty divorce from (Band-leader) Harry James and, I guess, enjoyed the distraction from what was going on in her personal life. Steve, I read or heard that Martha Raye was not only a first-rate entertainer but was also a medical doctor. When Miss Raye was entertaining the troops, if the medical people were short-handed she would join in and serve in her role as a physician, even giving directions to the other medical staff. Also I remember Martha Raye appearing sometimes as Mel's mother in the TV series "Alice" starring Linda Lavin.

Thanks for another fun review -- great as always. Miss Martha Raye - she rests in the Fort Bragg Cemetery (Fort Bragg, NC) - which is the cemetery for U.S. Special Forces - Green Berets - only woman who is buried there. Joe E. Brown, he was part of a Hollywood troupe that came to my father's Army Air Corps base overseas in WW2 - with Ann Sheridan, Pat O'Brien and Paulette Goddard. My father was a major so he got to hang out with the stars. Pat O'Brien offered $600.00 ($10K today) for my dad's Irish Setter...but turned him down. The stars played a softball game with the troops. Goddard (in short skirt, SANS underwear) played second base...so all the guys were sliding into second, whether they need to or not!!

So glad to see Steve is in accord with Animal from "Stalag 17" in his love for "Betty, Betty!!!" Grable was a true pro who brought much to her steady stream of output for Fox (IMO, she's particularily wonderful in "Mother Wore Tights," and singing "No Talent Joe" in "Meet Me After the Show"). Zanuck wanted her to go dramatic for "The Razor's Edge" (in the role that won Anne Baxter an Oscar), but Betty didn't feel she she could pull it off- I think with her earnest approach she could have been fantastic. Researching a piece on "Guys and Dolls" for my blog following a Brando tribute video I just put up, I found Grable was also considered for Miss Adelaide, but wasn't available for it- damn! Love Vivian Blaine and am glad she got to recreate her stage success, but in an alternate universe I want to see what Betty could've done with the role, and what impact the smash success of the movie in 1955 might have had on her dying film career. Going to watch "No Talent Joe" again right now.

The reason Betty didn't get Guys and Dolls was this believe it or not. Betty had an appointment with that SOB at Colombia Harry Cohn. Her dog became ill so she took her dog to the vet. She later called to re schedule and Harry was so pissed to be stood up for a dog. I would have done the same if I were her. But by this time Betty was tired of the film industry and set her sites on Vegas and television.

What a delightful surprise to wake up this morning and find you have done another review I have not seen this film but must check it out . I have two Betty Grable films love them both Moon Over Miami and Springtime in the Rockies both from the early 40s Betty is just so watchable always displays a great deal of energy a real movie star who never disappoints a great choice Steve. I am just getting over from a night ago the emotional draining I had from a film called the Sandpiper with Taylor and Burton wow have you seen it when the two of them are on screen it’s hard to take your eyes off them and of course it the ending brought a tear to my eye another fine Vincent Minnelli work . I remember knowing who Martha Raye was, but can't recall actually seeing her except in Polident commercials. Kinda like Carol Channing, who made an indelible impression just by looking at the camera and saying "wow!" in a commercial for soda pop (sounds simple, but it was absolutely hilarious).

Martha Raye had a solid career in films in the late '30's and early '40's. She was famous on Saturuday Morning TV in the '70's. You can see her on YouTUbe with Judy Garland on "the Judy Garland show except. Hilarious. Channing was most famous on Broadway " Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" & "Hello Dolly" and won an Oscar Nominatiion for "Throughly Modern Millie'.

I actually saw Betty Grable on Broadway in 1967 ... she had replaced Carol Channing in "Hello, Dolly!" It was a matinee, and the audience loved her. During one dance number, when she lifted her skirt to show some leg, the crowd went nuts. It was a trip.

So nice to see you back here to entertain and share with us. Missed you and would love to see more of you 😘 This is a great movie. Betty is so gorgeous in this one. I have to agree with you that it’s a little unbelievable that she is not recognized for simply putting on glasses 😂 I love Martha. When she isn’t making funny faces, I think she’s quite pretty. The color in this movie is gorgeous and the choreography is amazing with the roller skate number. Hermes was the bomb 💣 Thanks again Steve for sharing this movie. Eugene Paulette was also Frier Tuck in Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. So funny 😂

Martha Raye had seven husbands. But I want to know how many wives the husbands had. I think she was a beard to some of them. I think it started with her first husband: Hamilton Westmore, designer of the first Barbie doll. And it concluded with her last husband, but I do believe he took care of her until she passed. I also read she was most likely lesbian. I can't prove it. Not a surprise that she and Judy Garland had a lot to talk about!

I have read the biographical book of Betty Grable. Betty admitted that she did not want to be a dramatic actress as she did not want to work that hard. The studio did force her into one dramatic role (I Wake Up Screaming) released in 1941 and she reportedly told the studio to never put her in a dramatic role ever again as it was as she put it "way too much work." The studio wanted Betty to be more versatile as an actress. She told an interviewer that she would rather do cheery musicals where she could just be her own personality and be natural. Betty also admitted that she was not much of a singer nor did she give Cyd Charisse any competition in the dance department. But film audiences loved the Grable personality. I think Betty should have taken the studio's advice and done more dramatic parts as she may have had a longer film career after film musicals ceased to be made. Just around the time of the film "How To Be A Millionare" Betty was once again offered a dramatic role as a sort of pickpocket or prostitute. But she turned that down as well saying her audience did not want her playing those parts. As you said, "How To Be Very Very Popular" was her last film and what a turkey it was. Marilyn Monroe was shrewd enough to turn it down as well. There was nowhere to go in films for Betty after that.

I agree with you. The role she turned down was that od "Sophie" in the all-star film version of Somerset maugham's 'The Razor's Edge". the part eventually went to Anne Baxter and won her the Oscar. Zannuck wanted her for it because she had wholesome sex appeal , but she declines. ironically, he didn't think Baxter had any sex appeal, but her friend director Gregory Ratoff went to bat for her and lied to Zanuck by tellng him that he was wrong about Baxter, that he's had sex with her and she was hot. Of course, Zanuck being Zanuck, that was enough for him. .Ironically, I think Betty's best screen performance is in "I Wake Up Screaming". She was always so honest and the role of the true blue sister who fights to find her sister's murderer was a terrific fit. Thanks for watching! Steve

I remember reading about how Betty Grable was disgusted that they painted her image on the side of a plane used to drop bombs during WWII but didn't want to say anything because she didn't want to come off as unpatriotic. Is that true? If it is true that only makes me like her even more because who would want their smiling face painted on something used to kill people?

Part of the reason why I enjoy these movies so much is the look of them .. technicolor really added pizzazz and glamour. Betty G had the warmest/sweetest face, she was adorable. Good old Grable. Have you done Lena Horne yet? This reminded me of an interview with her where she said the black GIs used to have her picture over the top of Betty Grable's so there wouldn't be "issues" during surprise inspections! Horne added, she was known for the movie, "Stormy Weather", but the only one she liked was "Cabin in the Sky" as she felt reasonably authentic. She even really wanted to be The Wicked Witch in "The Wiz", but no chance, as she had become a 'symbol' and so that wasn't appropriate. Heck of a life story and a talent for the ages.
