Recently upgraded to windows 10 ... ready to throw my computer out the window and become a Luddite. After viewing your video and making your recommended changes ... no longer need to ... THANKS!
Thanks for your clear and pleasant video, which has reassured me about the availability of that program, once I update from windows 8.1 to windows 10. That program has enabled me to awaken from the nightmare of the charms bar, the active corners and not being able to start from my deskstop I have also found their search function a lot more efficient and reliable than than the Modern UI one. And the only time I had a problem, I went to their forum and the makers of the program solved it within an hour. Great work on their part! And to celebrate, I used the program to personnalize my start button and have it look like the windows 7 one. Now I can combine the improvements of windows 8 and 8.1 with the look and feel of windows 7. And now your video has made me hope I might do the same with windows 10. That would be the best of two worlds!
Thanks, it is nice to know that this option exists, and that it is easy to install and set up. It will allow me to avoid having to retrain some family members who struggled to understand their original O.S. and won't adapt well to W10's changes.
so what you must do is start the Classic Shell Settings program, and UNcheck the box "Show All settings" if it is checked already. Then, go to the "Basic Settings" tab and select the circle for the following options: Left Click Opens - Windows Start Menu Shift+Click Opens - Windows Start Menu Windows Key Opens - Windows Start Menu Shift+Win Opens - Windows Start Menu after that, click on 'OK' and now you are able to keep the Windows 10 start menu! this is for the ppl who wants to change the start icon only
Thanks so much, I am getting ready to hook up a new desktop and am coming all the from the dark ages, windows Vista. I have honestly put off getting a computer because of W10. I have watched dozen Classic Shell install videos, 3/4s of which are outdated and most of the others, way to complicated. I have made notes on your video just in case I change over and can't get to this youtube video for whatever reason..just wanted to say thanks so much for putting everything in layman's terms!
Thanks for the tutorial. Last night my windows 10 upgraded or updated or whatever. This morning I get a message saying my Classic Shell won't work on windows 10 anymore and may damage my files. So I went online and found your video. I guess there is an update for Classic Shell....Thank God! I forgot how much I hated the Windows 10 startup menu. I can't believe my update just deleted my old Classic Shell. You would think Microsoft would get a hint!! We all HATE your start up! When I first got Windows 10, (it came on my new Dell desktop) I was flummoxed! Then my son (who used to work for Microsoft eons ago) told me about Classic Shell. It worked find until last night. Thank you for putting the link for an upgraded Classic Shell. I am going to be very relieved. And thanks for your video--you told me about the settings which my son did not. I am ready to go.... Wish me luck Susan Elder
Good job on the video and spreading the word about Classic Shell! Four months ago (April 2016) I built a new desktop PC and loaded Win 10 Pro for the operating system. The first software I installed was Classic Shell, I love it. One hour ago, I did the windows update. After updating I opened the Run box (Windows key + R) and entered (winver) to see the new version... which is Win 10 Pro Version 1607, OS Build 14393.10. When the automatic reboots finished, which is part of the Win 10 update process, I got the an action center notification stating: Classic Shell has been removed from your PC, it is incompatible with the current version of Windows. I felt like crying. A user posted on the Classic Shell forum that it also happened to him... he reinstalled Classic Shell, but apparently it gets removed again when rebooting the PC. Hopefully a new version of Classic Shell will overcome the issue. Heaven help us!
Ditto. Not happy. I'm sure the devs will pull through like always. It happened in a few other builds of Windows 10 too. Hang in there! Thanks for the kind words!
This actually isn't the program I was looking for. Perhaps you can help, I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to get the old Microsoft Plus with the different desktop themes to work on Windows 10? Is that possible at all, do you know?
Windows 10 totally sucks, so the above application is a great option to get back that classic win 7 look. This might be an option for me when i build my high end gaming pc over the next few months...
I hate everything about Windows 10. It contains a bunch of useless apps that I don't even care to look at, and most frustrating is now it's so hard to navigate around my computer. Windows 7 was and is always my best choice for work and file management due to its simplicity of use. Your video tutorial on how to install and where to get Classic Shell is a bless. I installed it. Very happy now that I got my computer back to working condition ^v^ again. Thank you much!
I never asked for Classic Shell. I never downloaded Classic Shell. But here it is. WTF??? That means that someone either is using it to "mask" something OR it's just another Used Car Salesman. Now, I think I have a good idea where this came from.
Thanks so much for this video. My mother just bought a new laptop that came with Windows 10 pre-installed, and I hate it. Windows 7 is much less complicated. This will make 10 easier to navigate. :)
I had Classic Shell installed on my old system. I had it set up where the windows icon on the keyboard went to windows 10 menu; and when I pressed the windows icon on the tray it went to windows 7 menu. The hard drive malfunctioned (as well as the cloned backup's) and when they put the harddrive in the new system and salvaged as many as they could of the old drive programs, the icon in the tray now shows windows 10 menu and the windows 10 icon on the keyboard shows windows 10 menu. I forgot how to set it up so only the windows icon on the keyboard would show windows 7 menu. Do you know how to do that? I still want the keyboard windows 10 icon to be windows 10 menu. But the tray icon to be windows 7 menu.
Thanks this is just what i was looking for as i hate win10 design but i can't change it as it's a brand new gaming laptop and i miss my win7 will install it later (dual boot) whne i upgrade the m.2 ssd to a larger nvme :) but for now this shell is a liefe saver i really love it :) even managed to get all my gadgets working on win 10 with 8gadget pack tools :)
Amazing the amount of available settings! I had ClassicShell installed already when I watched your video and thought I only had three different settings available! I shall now experiment with other settings. The only thing that worries me is that I have been told that ClassicShell is notoriously difficult to uninstall should I ever want to do this. Anyway, thanks for your video
Can you get the 3D menus look with transparent panels and taskbar like Win 7? Is there an option to change the opening animation to be like the Win7 quad- colour pulsating window?
i had this on my win/7 got the free win/10 upgrade ok it let me keep it i had it set to look like xp last month the win/10 had a update and it took this away i ty for telling about the update on classic shell for real i did not have to do nothing it let me keep the win/xp back yea lol im old school
Hey Tektopia, I have a question in regards to Windows 10 and Classic Shell. First off, I know Classic Shell is virus free (as I know of) but by any chance could it corrupt the OS? What happened was that I had Classic Shell on my Windows 10 laptop which I only had it for a week and then I come back one time from dinner and suddenly my keyboard stops working. I had Classic Shell at the time installed and anyhow, let's say I had to do a hard reset on Windows. I got my computer working again thank goodness and hadn't used Classic Shell since. Everything runs fine. I really want to use it again cause I miss the old Windows 7 start menu but want to make sure it is safe. Thanks. :)
Don't download it period because it will have a expiration date and if your trial finished it will forced you to buy it you will be locked on your start button don't download it
29 March 2017 LIFE SAVER! GOD SEND! If this thing works throughout the rest of setting the settings as it has so far it might actually make Windows 10 worth keeping. (Maybe) Jury is still out, but suffice it to say that up until this moment I've been dealing with a nightmare. Thanks for restoring part of my sanity. :oD
I just bought a new LT with Windows 10, I have been using Win7 for 6 years. I was worried about using Win10. This tutorial on the "Classic Shell" will help me a lot. I am going to download as so as possible. Thanks so much!
I love windows 7 and I have a tablet that had windows 8.1 then upgraded to windows 10, is it possible to make it look like windows 7 feel, I have a pc that had windows 7 and I upgraded to windows 10 and a friend of mine showed me this program and made it fell and look like 7 and I love it .
i have installed this program just to get the invisible taskbar... But the app turn the windows 10 menu automatically to the w7 menu... And have no option to turn back to windows 10 menu... Wtf
Ok, aparently you have to go to the setting of classic start menu, go to the tab controls and set the options "left click opens" and "Windows key opens" to windows start menu. That shoul do it
Classic Shell is amazing, I think the Classic Style start menu is still the best - My method of comparing is this: how many clicks do you need to get to your application shortcut ? If you need to scroll, that's a fail ...
This is still worth installing for me at least, I'm one of those folks that have noticed that every new iteration of windows microsoft has moved the things that matter more and more mouse clicks away and broken user functionality along with it, what they have also done to explorer for those of us that are used to zipping through file systems via the keyboard is an absolute joke - all this for the sake of making things look pretty - with this tool the menu works far more efficiently in my humble opinion and allows me to get to what I need a lot quicker than the abominations that have been forced upon us over the last few windows versions - wish i stumbled on this earlier thanks
great explanation In Windows 10 I was using a full screen start menu because I like the Windows 8.1system (2 computers running 8.1) However I hate the Windows 10 start menu. With classic shell I can use both. Now my full screen menu is an icon on the task bar. easy to use almost like 8.1- which I will not update. Just because some people do not like 8.1 does not mean its bad I use 8.1 proudly
Thanks, I figured it out eventually, the one thing I want to change but can't find, was to put colour back into all the file windows at the top, it used to be blue, now boring antiseptic white, I can't see a setting for it, but may have missed it, there is a lot to look at. Any ideas? Kev
Try typing window colors and metrics in the windows search bar? I think this is a Windows setting that Classic Shell changed and not an actual Classic Shell setting.
Thanks, I'll try that later, trying to do a clean install right now, on a brand new but upgraded laptop, it's not going well, not found a vid either with my issues.
It doesn't work. I get a error : This app can't run on this PC Classic Shell doesn't work on this version of Windows Learn More. Anything help for ideas? I'm running Windows 10
Thanks for the great tutorial. I got my PC back from repair and they had installed Classic Shell. I´m glad they did cause I didn´t knew about it. But I simply can´t get the start menu the same color as the task bar like yours, mine is blue. Can anyone help??
+TektopiaTV Yes, my "Metro" is blue by default and I can´t seem to find a way to change it. It looks like two different themes when it´s blue and the task bar is black. I know it really doesn´t matter but it just looks way cooler when the colors are alike.
I first heard of changing W10 with classicshell from a service technician but never really looked into it. Now I am going to try it and see if it corrects my "your start menu doesnt work click to signoff". Microsoft apparently does not have a clue how to fix this!
TektopiaTV Not fresh install laptop came windows 8 and used MS upgrade off online. No problem with profile until sometime after I installed DAW. I found other profiles on laptop had working start menu. I ran classicshell on my corrupted profile and problem solved. Next installed on other profiles. should have done this when I first heard about it.
Excellent Video :) :) thank you for taking the time and trouble to make it. One question, the screen you have in the last half of the video, how do you get back to that please, sorry if it's a dumb question. Kev
Thanks for doing this. Greatly appreciated. Just installed Classic Shell. Now, if only the folks at Classic Shell can find a way to restore the wide borders, and custom theme capabilities of older windows.
dude thank you. i have always had this problem with my windows 10 that it wouldn't let me search anything in the search bar and my Cortana kept crashing. so i turned off Cortana and now i have this shell host which in my opinion is a hell of a lot better than the windows 10 one.
Perhaps I missed something but it would be good if there was a link to the menu added to the start menu / desktop / task bar. I wanted to amend my choice in the menu and had to go to the folder on the drive and add it to the task bar myself. ??
Beautiful job Josh! Just installed CS for use on 8.1 and now there is so much less aggravation in doing so. I'm actually looking forward to using my computer more often now. Thank you so much for the clear and informative How To.
Wow sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. RU-vid's notification tool isn't very helpful. I'm glad that this video helped you out! I know loads of people hate the new start menus, especially 8.1, so I decided to do this video. Thank you for watching and the kind words! Take care!!
Thanks for the tutorial! I have a new Windows 10 PC en route from Amazon as I type this but I really dont want to give up many of the XP style menus I've known for 10+ years - now I dont have to.
Then this is definitely the software for you. The customization is almost endless. You could make Windows 10 look like Windows 95 if you really wanted to! Thanks for watching!
Love this program. I found it doing a random google search one day. I used it on tech preview of Windows 10 before it released. Made my fears of upgrading to it deminish. The new start menu is too crowded and feels like a mish mash with the apps and tiles. This program is like a magic wand for Windows 8.1 lol. No more metro screen as default, actual start menu and boot to desktop like Windows ought to do in the first. Installed it on a friends laptop and they enjoy using it alot more now.
I hear you there. I always saw people using it when I was on 8.1 and I just kinda pushed it aside. Now that I've tried it...... wow. Thanks for watching and checking out my channel!
+TektopiaTV Youre welcome good video. You got my sub! The average user wouldnt know about this program. I also donated $5 to the developers too since they are more than deserving of it. Its that great of a program.
Thanks Tektopia, Now that I look at it I feel that the solution was indeed very simple, I just changed the menu delay to the highest value possible. You earned a sub.
