They went from a party band to elevator music within the space of two albums. 5150 was a decent album. Loved the sound of Eddie’s Steinberger on two of the tracks. Ou812 was a huge shock to me. I couldn’t believe this was 3/4 of the people who gave us Tora Tora and Unchained. It’s probably got better with age but I suppose you also get used to syphalis after 34 years.

I’ve always wondered how Good Enough and Summer Nights from 5150 would have sounded like had Dave stayed. Supposedly they were written and worked up when he was still in the band. I wonder if there are any demos of those songs with Dave in the VH vault.

Appreciate your reviews and everyone has the right to like whatever version of the band they liked. Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist on the Sammy Hagar era albums so if they are that terrible shouldn’t he share some of the blame. After all he thought the songs were good enough to record and perform live.

I remember when Dave left the band and me thinking....Well, that's it. End of an era. And it was. They complain how Sammy de-balled VH, but don't forget: Eddie wanted more keyboards in the band. He wanted more melody. That's why he and Sammy got on so well. Till they didn't. It's that simple man.

Hey Ralph! (Jim F here) I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't "hate" the Van Hagar era or Sammy himself, but it does not hold a candle to Van Halen with DLR. I also think as time goes on my appreciation for Van Halen (DLR) just grows and grows, while my appreciation for Van Hagar sinks. A lot of their stuff I liked when new doesn't hold up very well as it ages. Chickenfoot holds up better than most Van Hagar.

Hey Ralph, the song 1984 originated as Michael Anthony's bass solo on the Hide Your Sheep tour in 82. You can hear it on a bunch of different shows from that tour. It's pretty much note for note w/o the high keyboard part

That line in The Wall, "Look, Mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky," is the opening to "Goodbye Blue Sky." The song is about the bombing of London during WW2 (or any aerial bombardment, really.) That line spoken by the child is so chilling to me because, normally, something like that would be a typical, sweet thing a child might say. An airplane in the sky is an exciting sight for a child. But in this instance, the child is naively remarking upon the very thing that is coming to rain down death and destruction on him, his family, and his city. The Wall is a god-damned masterpiece. The film is one of the very few times that an album or a band's music has been turned into a movie and it actually turned out to be nearly as much of a masterpiece as the original. That song scares the hell out of me, while also being as beautiful a thing as you can imagine. Just like the child's words.

What's remarkable is that they recorded VH II in less than a week. OU812 took 6 months, yet didn't they say it was "rushed" at the time because they were booked to do Monsters of Rock? I never got around to listening to OU812 (there were better hard rock and metal albums that year, and undeniably some that sucked) until 1993 or 1994 when I went to go see them for the first time.

saw Van Halen in 1979 at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell Idaho. If I recall, it was right when VHII had just come out. 2000 in attendence at $6.50 per ticket. I would rather hear Dave saying "I love the little way the line runs up the back of the stocking, That suit is you!, reached down between my legs than Sammy singing Hey waitress! and all the Yeah yeah yeahs Daves indian whoops, pig noises and all that is preferable to me than sammy sccreeching yeahs

I hear so many people say that Sammy wrote more grown up lyrics than Dave and I've always thought that was insane. Dave's writing was so much more clever. OU812 is their weakest album. I do like Van Hagar but you always make me laugh and you make excellent points about why I shouldn't. Lol. This video was so great. Take care.

This has got to be an easy clean sweep for VH2. I never listened to any Van Hagar era album start to finish. I admit to likening s few songs but not near as much as any Roth era song - Your No Good (I never even heard that Hagar era track), dance the night away ( I actually had to think on that one cause it’s one Hagar era song I do like), somebody get me a dr. (Easy and never heard that Hagar track), bottoms up, out of love again (my favorite VH song), light up the sky (top 5 VH song), Spanish fly, DOA (another top 5 VH song), woman in love, beautiful girls. Yep clean sweep. One listenable track on OU812 and it’s the ballad and still not better than the worst song on VH2 which is Dance The Night Away in my opinion. It’s only the worst song because all the other are so great not because it bad.

Those 6 DLR records are perfection. That's why if you hear VH on the radio, it's Dave. It sounds as relevant and fresh as it did 40 years ago. Van hagar is like lover boy, some people liked it at the time, but now everyone laughs.

Here is the definitive list of songs that represent the worst of Hagar’s lyrics: Good Enough, Summer Nights, Source of Infection, Black and Blue, Sucker in a 3 Piece, Spanked, In n’ Out…. I could keep going, but I would be listing almost 40 songs across 4 albums that have aged so badly. Not only was DLR the fun in Van Halen, but he was the brains as well.

Another hilarious Van Halen vs Van Gina matchup! While I prefer original DLR, MA and the Van Halen brothers over all other lineups, I appreciate all incarnations of VH (including Gary Cherone) but Ralph cracks me up on this as he does anytime he talks about Sammy The Red Wacker Hagar. However, I gotta know (if you're reading this Ralph) had Eddie not died and was healthy and they went ahead with the propused 'Kitchen Sink' Tour would you have attended just to see the classic lineup again.

1984 was 2nd to Thriller. ADKOT was 2nd to Adele's 21. Shit comparison really. And you have to realise those Hagar albums had the brand name Van Halen behind them and a weakened playing field in regards to other competing artists in the nadir of the late 80's/early 90's. Even Without You was the most requested song of all time on rock radio, it was all hype, all of the continued success benefitted from the House that Roth (era) built.

Funny video as always. I agree that Mine all Mine is Hagar digging back for something better but the dorky keyboards didn't help and though Michael Anthony is a great background singer, his efforts sound silly like "ooh ooh; I'll send a message!" I always thought I was the only one who enjoyed their cover of Your No Good the way it was delivered with the raw and legit rocking nature by DLR. I agree that EVH (God rest his soul) reminds me a tad of Paul Stanley who was quick to push something like Psycho Circus ("best album since Destroyer lol") and then take it back once the album came out and disappointed. Diver Down isn't their best but the original supportive narrative changed.

Personally, I like Van Halen and I like Van Hagar. But I think it's kinda strange whenever I hear anyone prefers Van Hagar. I like all Van Halen and Van Hagar, But Diamond Dave is unbeatable. He's irreplaceable. OU812 is a great 8/10 album for me. But Van Halen II isn't anything like OU812. Van Halen II is a masterpiece of hard rock that influenced everyone and OU812 is just kinda Van Hagar. It's just kinda there.

Contrary to popular belief, EVH wasn't the nicest corporate rocker in the world. Van Halen were the hookers of rock( a Phil Moog, Hit Parader review quote), albeit the best in history. You're No Good 2. Dance the Night Way 3. Somebody Get Me a Doctor (Sammy wrote Somebody get me a Procter) 4. Bottom's Up 5. Outta Love Again...Diver Down highly under rated. I'd put my track by track, but it'd just be the track listing of Van Halen II, a perfect album along with the debut, Women and Children First, and Fair Warning. I actually quite like the Sammy stuff, but OU812 is the worst album they did with him
