I recently found a 63 Euro that had been sitting at least 25 years....oil looked good, so we hooked up a battery, pulled the fuel line into a cup of gas and cranked it.....it actually turned over, got fuel to plugs and compression....just no spark..... so, once my baja build is done, I'll be restoring this one..... my dad could not believe it would even turn over after that span of time

It's a myth that Ethanol-enhanced gasoline goes bad faster. I've had a car sit for over a year before I started it again and it ran fine. "While all gasoline loses octane as it ages, ethanol-enhanced gasoline loses octane at about the same rate as regular gasoline, according to Jim Simnick, a technical advisor at BP Global Fuels Technology, and Lew Gibbs, a senior engineering consultant and Chevron Fellow. The two men have over 75 years of combined experience working with gasoline."

Great tips. Since we don't drive our bug every day, we use ethanol free gas. Up here in Canada, my preference is Shell 91.

Love your informative videos as we restore our 65 ragtop added pop out window bug. Chris! we had a mouse nest inside our 1300 engine which would have prevented air cooling. My son Ben averted the disaster, and it runs like a Swiss watch.

Very important: anti-seize lubricant for reinstalling spark plugs....saves stripping threads in spark plug holes.

It is not called a motor but an internal combustion engine.

My 1979 vw convertible has sat in a garage for 20 years. I wouldn’t even attempt to start it.

Wouldn't 10W30oil be a bit too "runny"? Back in the day we put in 20W50 - as there was almost nothing else. Might leak a bit more than usual with such thin oil. Very valuable hints you're giving here!

Hey Chris, you mentioned if the car had electronic ignition, do you know of any good drop in for 6 volt?
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 7 лет назад
I have never used one for a 6v. I know they are out there but do not work all the time. Best to use it in a 12v system.

What about a 6 volt system and a dead battery??
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 9 лет назад
you would need a 6v battery. You can use a 12v to get is started though if need be.

I looked at one today and the motor had a professionally rebuild, it started but it wasn't staying running. Not sure if it was the idle cut off solenoid, but the used dealership owner finally got in the car and revved the crap out of it until it stayed going...is that bad for motor? Not sure why it was having trouble. Again it was restored with most everything redone on it, I would be interested in your opinion on what issues it may have or if anything to avoid...they're asking $16k for it.

Buy one for 1k and put 15k on it makes more sense

Nice video but can't imagine that someone who needed to be told what tools to take would be capable of using them.

Older VWs are 6 volt, and a 12 volt battery will fry the system. He doesn't say anything about this!
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 7 лет назад
Of course a 12v system will burn up a 6v. But if you need a jump, or you are stranded somewhere, and all you have is a 12v jump, it's fine, it will work. You just can't keep it on for long.
