Chris, your videos always point me in the right direction and give me the confidence to undertake a job no matter how big or small. Thank you for having the passion to pass on the knowledge
Hi Chris, Just a quick note to thank you for doing these videos. I cant believe every step is laid out to restore or build a bug. I had several bugs as a teen, (40+ years ago) and Ive been wanting to get another to restore as a daily driver. Now it looks like I have all I need to get the job done. Thanks again
Hey Chris, perfect explanation of all details!! I really appreciate your style - simple and clear. It helped me solve my problem on my Karmann Ghia. Jens from Germany
Thank you so much I took the gage apart from my 63 bug and cleaned it very well and had grease the gears and put new gels in. I didn't know what glue to use except plastic model airplane glue my brother had. It wasn't the greatest, but it works, now im not blinded by a little 12volt bulb. Lol
I just restored a speedometer after watching Chris here's videos. I did everything the way he talked about and it came out beautiful! However upon reassembling the "glass and bezel" back onto the "case" the edges of the bezel crimped and slipped and I ended up scratching the speedo dial :( But it still looks like new. Just be very careful on reassembly. I bend the bezel "clip" a little less aggressive and it slid on with no problem. (Sorry about the bad description moral is be careful!) I also changed the indicator lenses with a red plastic bingo chips from made by Bicycle. And green sense from a staples page tab.
Not just any grease, but a small, tiny dab with a tooth pick of Luberplate on the exposed gears and 1 drop of Triflow liquid lube on the rear of magnet shaft, not inside where the cable goes, but right between the brass or metal bushing that holds the magnet shaft to the speedo frame. Of key importance.
Hey Chris, me puedes decir la diferencia entre beetle y super beetle...? btw, tus vids son expectaculares !!!!! muchas gracias a nombre de todos los amantes de losVWs.
Eastwood got a range of spray paints specially formulated to look exactly like the original new metal treatment If that's important for the restoration. The simulated cadmium plating paint gives great results, in my experience, just like brand new. Worth checking out.
hi great vid ....i am in New Zealand and they do KPH here do you know where i can get a sticker pack to stick over the spedo to make my MPH into KPH ...cheers fish
Always great vids from you. Thankyou. My 74 beetle odometer quit registering. Hesitant to operate on it. I do have the ability to probably fix it, but not sure of the protocol.Any suggestions where to start?
Good tutorial ! Aha, Now I know why my 2 little round light holes are funny looking or at least the left one. Worn out gel filters 😃 it is important to know what they are for incase they are faded like mine. I love my original to my car model manual !! 👍
Any idea what size that connection to the back of the speedo is? I'm connecting the cable to an after market speedo and it has a 5/8-18 thread. It's too small for the VW cable connection.
hey.. have you taken a speedo apart with a trip odometer push rod going thru the front plastic cover? I want to know how to get the trip odometer out so I can work on the plastic cover, dial and needle. 71 fasty I have. thx
Hey Chris, I recently pulled out the turn signal bulb, I put it back in and does not turn on at all. I can hear the relay clicking when I take the bulb out and place it to exposed metal the bulb works, I suspect a ground issue. The other instrument lights are working fine but can’t get this little guy to turn on and off within the bulb housing. Any suggestions? I noticed the metal that goes through the inside of the bulb thinking maybe it’s just bent to far down?
Chris, the speedo you're restoring here appears to be all gear driven. Is there another type with a spinning magnet and torsion spring or is that just part of the mechanism that wasn't serviced in the video. BTW, your videos are great and really informative.
Nice video man! I have a 70's beetle and when i drive, the speedo doesnt tell me how fast im going, it stays at zero and ive made sure everything is hooked on properly. Could you help me?
+guerrerokidd210 : If you don't get response from Chris maybe the problem is the internal mechanism that is frozen because the grease that came from factory protecting the moving parts was gone long time ago, and some WD40 on them for sure doesn't go to fix properly the problem; I can fix your speedo or take as core for another one in working condition. Chris, what type of grease or lube do you recommended for the gears inside the VDO, and what type of grease do you recommended where the speedo mates with the cable? thanks you!
What do you do if they have a noise around 45 miles a hour in the car? I took some break cleaner into where the speedo cable goes. It helps for a while but than that annoying sound comes back. Have you gone thru this before?
Michael Britt I think lithium grease would probably work best or electronics grease. I wouldn't use heavy duty grease, it's too messy and it's just not the right grease for this application. just my two cents.
+arturo tellez : I can do that work for you depending on your VW model (Pre 57 speedos need more time and patience; I'm in El Paso, TX and you can reach me at mainkadel19@yahoo.com
You forgot the most important thing ,how to remove the old grease and re lube to extend the life of the the speedo, restoration is not only cosmetic there are gears and bushings that need attention.
