The "middle eastern scat" you mentioned is Konnakol. A way of counting rhythms.

I love how you have to be a musical genius to even transcribe this. I guess you literally have to be a god to write it!! I and most people in this world will probably never understand how Tigran's brain and other musical geniuses see the world and music.

That metric modulation (the transition to the 15/16 part) is so damn cool. I love how despite all the complex rhythms, you can almost always feel the 4/4 groove, even when nothing is actually playing it. That is truly an incredible feat.
@ignorantFid
@ignorantFid 12 дней назад
he follows it up immediately with another metric modulation from 15/16 to 4/4, which he teases a few bars before he commits to it.

At this point I'd say that Tigran Hamasyan is one of the great composers of our time. Currently about to finish a solo guitar arrangment of his amazing solo piano piece "Lilac".

Will you be uploading it? I'll sub because I'd love to hear it. I play piano and love Tigran's work. I dabble in guitar as well, (not nearly as well as piano), so it'd be right up my alley. 🤙

For anyone not aware, the 15/16 section pulls two excerpts from an earlier Tigran album "Red Hail." Highly recommend giving that album a listen - it's a MASTERPIECE of jazz/prog rock/armenian folk fusion. And those sections are brilliantly incorporated into this version of Drip!

I know Tigran has had a huge influence on Richard Henshall's compositions with Haken, but never really dove into his work. Thanks for doing this fun piece Doug. I know it's not improvised, but reminded me of The Kyteman Orchestra jam sessions. Check out the jam session PaDaDe.

What you referred to as "middle eastern scat". is actually vocalizations that are taught to learn the rhythms in Indian classical music. Most commonly heard from Tabla Players. They learn to vocalize the rhythms before playing them on the drums.

Doobs, this song goes through my head all the time because of you. You should also cover that awesome Bulgarian choir of the mysteries, sung, conceivably, in Old Church Slavonic. They do three song trilogy on Johnny Carson, and the middle song is the clinchpoop.

Hi Doug! Big fan, have you ever given Stratovarius a listen? They're a Finnish power metal band that have produced a number of great long tracks. There's definitely some classical influences in their music, loads of great keyboard work! I'm sure you'd love their stuff! I'd recommend "Elysium" its an 18+ minute long track on their titled album "Elysium". One of my favorites! Take care!

For a few reasons this made me think of Panzerballet and their album "Breaking Brain". It has complex rhythms, combines jazz and metal influences, contains some Konnakol, and is the only CD I've ever bought which came along with fold-out printed scores in the CD packet, for their song Typewriter II, one score for each of sax, bass, drums and 2 guitars! So one for Behind the Score? However, I don't find Typewriter II their most satisfying tune, instead I'd recommend their Shunyai with Trilok Gurtu, or even (believe it or not) their cover of Pink Panther.

It's konnakol, from carnatic Indian classical music, not middle eastern scat. It's like vocal rhythm. Yogev Gabay (the drummer on the right in the ensemble) has a fantastic video about it!

Definitely an excellent song! Being that I love to sing, I'd be forced to hum the vocals and vocalize some of the other instruments since the vocals are not in English. Heck, I can't even get the lyrics right to songs sung in English. So, I'm not even going to try to do it in a language I don't know.

I get a major King Crimson vibe. A bit of a mix of Wetton era and mid to late Belew era styles. Especially if you listen to the instrumentals from those areas. Having two drummers also brings King Crimson to mind as they had two drummers for Thrak and ProjeKct One

There is a transition that you call funky just before the singing to me sounds sour and I'm glad he doesn't revisit that so blatantly throughout the remainder of an otherwise nice piece of music.

You know. It seems to me that your musical intro could be a little more interesting musically. Especially for a classical composer. And it is always the same every episode that I have seen. You do not even have to change it. Maybe just six to eight notes before "It's the Daily Doug" Maybe one or three bars at the most before the intro. Something simple on piano would do. Show us what you got. Mix it up for all the future episodes. Kind of like how the Simpsons draw a new intro you could play a new intro. I believe even I could do that. Just a trifle. Da- da da- da duh-duh It's the Daily Doug. You know what I mean. I'm sure everyone would love and appreciate it. C'mon Whattaya say? 🎼🎵🎵🎶

it's not "eastern scat singing"... check out the word (concept) "konakkol".. too complex a subject for me to go here and you seem to hyave a faint idea of what it is.. and no, it's not general middle eastern.. only in Indian and Pakistani (and surely Bangladeshi) culture (edit: sure now everyone with an interest is learning how to do it but as of origin it's Indian.. and no, again, "tala" is a different concept with a different meaning, though yet it's something in the Indian rhythm tradition.. but not what he is doing)
