#anthrax #caughtinamosh #metalmonday
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Anthrax for the very first time on the channel. This band is considered one of the top four thrash metal bands, and I've covered the other three already. So, today's the day to hear Anthrax's music, and I'm starting with their song Caught in a Mosh. The song is full of aggressive rhythms and riffs, and it definitely got my blood pumping! I hope you enjoy!

The Big 4 of thrash: Metallica: the most popular and most angry Slayer: the most chaotic and most scary Megadeth: the most political and very technical Anthrax: the most laid back, the most fun, and much less of the above. Just about fun! And having seen all 4, Anthrax is the most recent I’ve seen(so also the oldest at the time I saw them) and was the most energetic show. I dunno, just a vibe I get from them. Horribly underrated, and shamefully a distant #4 in the Big 4. This is a great track, but I’d say Medusa is probably my favourite. I’d say Anthrax has more punk influence too.

Fun facts about Anthrax: The guitar player on this album, Danny Spitz, is now a master watchmaker. Vocalist Joey Belladonna moonlights in a Journey tribute band. And Spitz's replacement on the guitar is Jonathan Donais from Shadows Fall, a band that was part of the new wave of American metal in the early 2000's. Also, Anthrax's collaboration with Public Enemy was the precursor for the rap-metal genre.

I saw the Metallica/ Anthrax Tour (Master of Puppets/ Spreading The Disease) in Cardiff St David's Hall, Wales, September 1986, 17 days before Cliff was killed in the coach crash. What a tragedy. Second time for Anthrax (and Metallica) at Donington Monsters of Rock Festival August 1987- Bon Jovi, Dio, Metallica, Anthrax, W.A.S.P. & Cinderella. I then saw Anthrax for the last time on the Among the Living Tour Cardiff again, November 1987. From the 'Among' album, classics are 'Indians' and 'I am The Law' . Best tracks from the previous album Spreading The Disease are A.I.R, Madhouse and Gung-Ho. Nice to hear some Anthrax on your channel Doug! this album always brings me back. Enjoyed the reaction...as always! Edit: As a next song, if you want to stick to the same album, I loved "Indians" back in the day!

Do Indians please. I loved Anthrax when young. And been caught in a mosh. My glasses fell and the mosh instantly was stopped and everyone looking down to find my glasses. Sweetest mosh I've known. And also moshpits on Claude Francois cover band. French chanson moshing is awesome. Cheers.

I once got caught in a mosh to this (after many drinks). Enjoyable, but quite a few bruises the next day. I also once lost my shoe while watching Scorpions at a festival, luckily another guy picked it up straight away and handed me it.

You're spot on about Anthrax not achieving the same commercial success as Metallica or Megadeth but they were still very influential and deserve to be part of the Big 4 Btw I broke 2 ribs in a pit in 1989 at a Metallica show when they were touring the Justice album haha 🧐✌️😎🤘

I saw Anthrax on that tour. The bill was Metal Church, Anthrax and Megadeth. You may want to check out some Metal Church. Good songs: Metal Church, Beyond the Black, God's of Wrath, Ton of Bricks, Badlands, Date with poverty etc. For other Anthrax songs: A.I.R. , Madhouse, Among the Living, Indians just off the top of my head. Thank you.

I would recommend songs from the Anthrax record Persistence of Time. This record is more matured and a little bit darker than the precious records allthough Among the Living is the most popular record. -Intro the reallity / Belly of the beast -In my world After Persistence they had a line up change and got an new singer John Bush and recorded Sound of white noise. Great record and def. different to the Joey Belladonna area. -Only -Invisible -Black lodge (it's a kind of ballad). Looking forward for the next metal Monday 🤘🏻

I saw Joey Belladonna (me and the stupid XGF) on his first solo tour in some crappy club in Cleveland. The Empire, maybe. He put on a great show. Then came out and talked to anybody who wanted to talk to him. He and one of his dudes (don't recall his name) chatted with the GF and I for a good while, asking our opinion and just being a generally great guy. The best part was he and my GF chatting-she 5;10", he 5'4". Great, great guy.

I'm not sure Doug's ready for I'm The Man. I don't think Anthrax wants anyone to *remember* I'm The Man. :) But it's an ancient high school in-joke for me, so I have a soft spot for it.

Not my favourite Anthrax song (I started listening to Anthrax with the State Of Euphoria album, so the songs from that one and the follow up, Persistence Of Time, are my favourites), but any Anthrax is better than no Anthrax. As for recommendations, I suggest Belly Of The Beast, but you'd need to do the album version so you can include the song before it, Intro To Reality, since they're both really one long song.

Another thrash band you should check out is Dark Angel. Their nickname was 'The L.A. Caffeine Machine'. Even though Dark Angel were an influence on Slayer, they were unfortunately unable to break out of the underground. Dark Angel, for the most part, wrote intelligent lyrics & had one of the best drummers in the world, Gene Hoglan. Gene is known as 'The Atomic Clock'. Gene has even put out some instructional videos.

Anthrax has an extensive catalog having been around for 40+ years. They had a time in the mid90s - early 2000s where John Bush was the lead singer and put out some really great music. I don’t think it will be the most requested era, but I think it’s definitely worth checking out.

"Bushthrax" is very underrated, imo. Sound of White Noise was a great album, and I personally loved all the albums after that. Stomp 442 is raw af, and Volume 8 was -quite literally - groovy. WCFYA was a nice follow-up, and then they kicked him out, because the fans wanted Joey back.

Testament, practice what you preach , Alex Skolnick on lead guitar also has a degree in Jazz. Excellent player, excellent thrash band, just on the edge of the big four thrash bands. If you want to be blown away by sheer musicial talent on lead guitar, listen to the next song on the album called perilous nation, a master class in technique, sheer dexterity and taste.

Evil Twin is a good newer song. Scot Ian probably looks familiar because he is the one most often interviewed. Also he has done the most away from the band. He was in a VH1 reality show trying to make a Supergroup. Hosted another VH1 show with him interviewing rockers. Although the whole band was in an episode of Married with Children back when they all had hair.

Of the big 4 Anthrax had the most number of overall hits imo and are the only band still doing stuff on par with the 80's/90's. It was Anthrax that showed that metal can be bright and fun rather than doomy death and they were also the first metal band to fuse with rap pathing the way for Faith No More and Body Count and for bringing the communities together.

Anthrax was from NYC. Their music always had a bit more grit than the other big 4 bands. They did get more mature with age. Off of Persistence of Time. I’d suggest Intro/Belly of the Beast. Off of their latest release, “For All Kings” I would suggest “You Gotta Believe”

While my favorites from Anthrax are still of the old school, head banging variety, I think something from The Sound of White Noise would be more to your liking. In my opinion, songs like "The Black Lodge" or "Only" are a bit more mature and not quite so much thrash all the time. I would love to see you react to either of those 2 songs. However, if you choose another song from either of the first 5 albums, I would be completely happy with that as well! Love your channel! Keep up the good work!

I don't know if people can get how exciting this was at the time, and how much Thrash Metal blew the Glam Metal (Soft Rock in spandex and hair spray) which was dominating MTV off the stage, even before the Seattle Grunge scene put it into its overdue grave. With Anthrax in particular, I think you can hear the influence from Hardcore Punk on Heavy Metal, that had been developed and refined especially in the Twin Cities punk scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in terms of speed, raucousness, bellowing and making the live audiences need to mosh, to throw themselves around and get their suppressed angers and frustrations out.

"Only" is a perfect song. James Hetfield once said that to Scott Ian. It is quite simple song but good one. I would prefer more peaces like "Panic", "Who Cares Wins", "Across the River / Howling Furies", "Now It's Dark", "Subjucator", "Random Acts Of Senseless Violence".

Your not going find to super creative compositions or long drawn out songs with Anthrax. What you find is a really nice riff that you can bang your head to and rock out. That is the charm of Anthrax. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd love if Doug reacted to a couple more songs from Anthrax. They would be short videos without a ton of analysis, but they would be so fun for us fans and Doug would (hopefully) gain an appreciation of Anthrax for what they are. Pure, Fun Thrash Metal. Listening to music should be fun.
