What do you think is the best way to ensure people get what they are due, in terms of justice?

Protecting individual rights but also raising people in an environment that doesn't destroy or damage who they really are. Often parents, school and society musterbates and people are compressed into roles, behaviors and beliefs that don't fit who they are and their internal values.

I appreciate the study of “justice” as an idea. I’ve been going through Plato’s Republic and justice is the central idea.

I like the idea “comfortable standing or falling at their own merit”.

There can be no justice done without the search for truth. Every legal process needs first the finding of the truth. So all lawyers should be first the servants of truth, the seekers of truth.

The problem I have with this is that the ideal of Justice does not represent reality. For example it would be great if rich and poor were held to the same standard of justice, but this is simply not not true and is actively ignorant of reality. Within a society rife with wealth inequality the rich can ALWAYS afford legal resources the poor cannot meaning the execution of justice depends almost entirely on wealth and status. One cannot believe in the ideal of Justice without admitting wealth distribution is a part of it, these two are forever linked. This is simply an observation of reality.

Justice is an always elusive target which can never be hit. The best we can do is get a little bit closer to the mark with every shot. The justice system leans heavily towards those with power, wealth, and authority as all social systems do. There is little hope to change this as the people who could are the very people who would stand the most to lose. We are all in competition with each other and respurces are limited, including justice itself. You're either on top, enjoying all the benefits of largely random success or you're on the bottom being slowly crushed under the weight of all of those above. We all know this instinctively, and yet sometimes we struggle against it for fear we might jeopardize our position in the systems of government and justice. Personally I say "fuck it" and go play Doom Eternal. Apathy is the only rational reaponse to am overwhelming and hopeless problem.

Until the laws apply to all people equally regardless of their financial resources, we don't have a system of law, we have a control mechanism.

You mean things like rich people being able to afford better legal representation? Or things like women getting much lighter sentences for the same crimes as men?

@@toobnoobify both. Plus the issue of fines and financial support post punishment.

I'm not sure this guy makes much sense. "So then you would say, well you wouldn't really say that, but what you could do, in one situation, but that may not be the right situation, so then you think, but then your thinking is...". It doesn't sound like even HE knows what he wants to say.

Well, this is a pretty good reason to give the working class in the US proper healthcare. They make sure the economy can work, so they deserve some help as well.

Well I'm just going to sit here and wait for someone to say that David is wrong about Classical Liberalism and the idea of justice. Funny enough at some point a augment between several classic liberals about what liberalism even is. If the video was about republicanism the same damn thing would happen. At the end politics becomes a massive amount of static being piped into a echo chamber. Also its where people become so wrapped up in being right that logic goes out the window. Also where emotions override everything else.

What? Come on. Only because that happens sometimes doesn't mean that it has to happen all the time. This kind of pessimism is going to get us nowhere.

Ok, Look, I am (at least somewhat) on your side, but arguing that "that would be crazy and justice isn't crazy therefore that can't be justice" is just lazy. Also I find the idea of children being the property of their parents until they become adults and only then becoming their own property quite disturbing. Every human should, upon becoming a human, be his own property.
