One of the greatest and best-selling artists of the 21st century with nearly 100 million records sold in South Korea alone, IU is a diamond amongst the toughness of the music industry. Furthermore, when taking into consideration the amount of patriarchalism present in the music industry, IU has managed to not only write, produce, and release her own music, but has done so without overblown controversies and sexualization, just her and her talent. That is why IU is such an inspiration to so many and is considered a living legend at such a young age. She herself said it was never about money or records, it was all about the music and if you love what you do, then success will find you.

maybe not outright sexualization, but a lot of people definetely fetichized her cause of her age and "innocence". that's why she felt so controlled to the point where she released 23 and made a bunch of jabs to these types of things she was expected and idealized to be, an innocent child-like almost subservient little girl.

Thang Lian You lot just like to make heroes to worship so you profess some fictional patriarchy this, patriarchy that. Nobody stopped her from doing anything but like Rabid Talyor Swift fans, every time a woman singer changes her style you forge some *“she broke free of oppressive patriarchy! The music industry hates her for doing this!”* narrative. You don’t realize you sound some idiot who believes those dumb ads that look like *“Doctors hate this guy! They don’t want you to know this trick, we’re heroes for bringing you this!”* Of course a newbie singer isn’t allowed or feels confident enough to go for bolder themes until one has more presence and clout in the industry, it’s simple sound marketing choices. But you make it like there’s some kind of big bad empire to fight in every corner. Ridiculous idiots. And you are a greater fool if you think anyone who has to work with 100s of professionals to bring you quality music videos is allowed to do whatever they want. Not being able to do whatever you want is just the reality of living and collaborating with other people. On top of that, you are essentially complaining that the handful who do get stuck doing stuff they are most recognized for (in IU’s case, her cute image). Try telling that to the 1000s of artists who failed to achieve success at all and wasted years of their youth on failed endeavors! Even Rage Against the Machine constantly singing about fighting oppression is a corporate sock puppet who cashes in on rebellious teens’ need for counterculture. It’s of course her choice if she wants to be like Lee Sun hee who sings powerful pop songs in Korea even to this day, from her debut in the 80s. But you so called fans throwing her producers under the bus as some evil oppressor is putting words in her mouth and making her look like some ungrateful asshole.

Thang Lian In contrast, boys can’t cash in on the cute market. *And they have to end their careers due to Korean military service on top of that.* Yet you folks never cry a tear for them, just the women, even going as far as to make false narratives. Why? If boys tried cute like IU it’s not going to be popular and lucrative enough to buy those no matter how much a boy artist wants to. Artists and choreographers and producers won’t want to collaborate with a sinking ship.

@@CrabTastingMan 1) What are you talking about? There are boy groups with cute concepts. And not just one or two, either. Plus many other boy groups have *at least* one cute, innocent era. 2) Female idols have much shorter careers than male idols do. As they grow older, interest wanes, and they are soon replaced. Very few female idols and/or soloists continue in their careers after passing their 20s. You may notice that female idols on average tend to be younger than males on debut. This is done so that they can stay popular for longer, and so their companies can get more profit off of them. Many who are able to continue on regardless of that hurdle go into a sexier concept. Others who cannot make it in music continue on as actresses or show hosts. Meanwhile, male groups and soloists do not have this problem. They can continue to promote even into their 40s. 3) Military service? Just 2 years. If male idols can get over that hurdle, they're set. Females on the other hand have a much more uncertain future. See my second point for details. 4) Korean men tend to prefer the cute, childish concepts. It's actually females who prefer the sexy, girl-crush concepts (talking about Korea here). This is evident when you look at the demographics of various groups; groups who are young and have that sweet image tend to have a much larger male fanbase, while older ones or those with a more badass, sexy image tend to have a larger female fanbase. So when we consider IU, what she has accomplished is actually huge. From her debut at 15 years old, she had the image of "Korea's little sister." A cute, innocent, girlish vibe. Then she came out with this song, which had a more sexy, mature vibe to it. Furthermore, it directly referenced this whole issue about her past image and her future one, and her conflict about which she wanted. If you look at the MV, as they said, you can get this sort of "sexualizing a young girl vibe" from it, which would have served as a sort of slap in the face to her established fanbase. That kind of drastic image change is hard on any artist, whether male, female, Korean or not. She received both praise and hate for this song. But she survived the controversy and went on to make her own music, to do what she liked and not what other people demanded of her. And she stayed successful regardless. And that is a HUGE accomplishment in the male-dominated industry that is K-pop.

@@drag_611 I searched about it too, but I think she doesn't have perfect pitch but maybe her "relative pitch" (is that what it's called AHAHAH the thingy they used in dream high) is really good? I THINK perfect pitch is like ability to know the exact pitch of a sound immediately without any comparison, whereas relative pitch is sth like if you hear a sound and someone tells you it's A Major or sth, you can deduce other pitch through comparison? Anyways I think if IU has perfect pitch she would declare it XDD

To be honest. 23 is such an underrated bop. Korea wasn't ready to see IU being that bold that's why it was slept on in SK. Few years later they're calling it a masterpiece. That's how you make a timeless music. IU is so unapologetic that era that's what I love about it. Hope she makes a 23 sequel soon.

Her company really hit jackpot signing IU because that girl was able to create a reputation that supersedes even those mega-groups. If there is ever a solo artists that can go head to head with BTS, Blackpink, or Twice in the charts, it would be IU and she'd do it with ease. It's even more amazing that she never came from a defunct group. Most solo artists had a backing from their group's fanbase but IU rose to the top all by herself. She has made an image out of pure talent that's why SoKor respects her and her craft. It's even harder to imagine that she used to have a time where the whole nation almost condemned her and she came out unscathed and bigger than ever.

I'm always amazed by the breadth of IU's cultural references, including world-wide Pop culture. You guys got the Dr. Who Tardis design of her time machine and the Polar Express, but nobody got the fact that her black short dress and hair style in that scene was straight Wednesday Addams.

I was subscribed to another kpop react channel in the past while they were in college and what happened afterwards was......they just stopped making videos. 13:31 The reason IU came-out childish and kind of sexualized it, was because this whole song is basically talking about herself as 23 year old If you read the lyrics, she says that she wants to stay as a child but then she wants to become a real adult and seem more mature She showed this by herself looking childish while also looking sexy, and she's saying that she's confused and doesn't know what to become So she's basically saying that age 23 is a confusing period

one of the main reasons she's so popular is because she is not just a pop 'cutesy' style music and artist, he maturity and different style whilst still keeping an innocent, elegant but fun image is why she's so popular, that and her vocals are incredible. She's known as 'Korea's little sister' haha
