Hi, I'm a music teacher. In the Medieval and Renaissance period and in Roman Catholic churches in the Medieval and Renaissance, the congregation would just be listening to chant and choral music. In the Baroque, due to the Reformation, Reformational church congregations would have been singing chorales in their vernacular language. Chorales were written as a way to educate common people about theology. Also, thanks for this video; I'm using it during the pandemic to teach my middle school choir about the Classical period.

Music in the 17th century to the present reflects the changing history of the Europe and European societies. In the beginning you have a hierarchy dominated by the church (in particular the Roman Catholic Church). And there was the European aristocracy of kings & nobles who commissioned musicians to write music that appeal to the upper class. Everything reflected an established order. In the later centuries, composers started relying more and more on the paying public instead wealthy patrons as a way to make their living. The 1 critical event was the French Revolution in 1790s which turned the table for many absolute monarchs in Europe. Music became less representative of the aristocracy (established order) but more for the common people who paid to see concerts. Composers started incorporating folk melodies into their work and music became more expressive (often reflected the hardships and frustrations of the common people).

People should have also been singing along in the churches by this point. One of the arguments in the Reformation during the Renaissance period with Martin Luther, among his 95 problems with the Catholic Church, was his belief the people should be singing along, not just the clergy and the choir. Great Video!

I usually like your videos and I must say one thing about this one. Homophony refers to a texture which was also used in the baroque period, not only in classical period. Check the term. The word you want to use to make that difference in texture is called "accompanied melody". Keep up the nice work. ;-)
@caterscarrots3407
@caterscarrots3407 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, I find the word homophony to be very confusing cause it literally means "same sound" but it’s also used for something that is by no means same sound, the melody + bass texture. Like how are a Bach chorale and a Mozart sonata the same? And yet I see the same word used for both, it’s so confusing! So I prefer to specify homorhythmic counterpoint(Bach chorale texture) and Melody + Bass(Common texture of Classical Era).

I absolutely love your educational videos. And I'd like you to know how to pronounce the Italian phrases properly. Basso continuo it's not pronounced like the instrument. It's more like the sheep sound bah-so. Thanks for keeping Classical music fresh.

If you listen to the radio, these modern tunes are mostly based on this period. But if you dig deep to jazz, funk, hip hop, and underground electronic, you'll hear plenty of baroque influences. New Age is mostly romantic period influenced.

The Beatles wrote as much music for other bands and singers as they recorded themselves, so double their twenty albums in the eight years they were recording albums, and you're still nowhere near Haydn's 100 plus symphonies alone. Wow!

Thank you. Very enjoyable and informative. What a pleasure - an intelligent, attractive, and articulate female. Hopefully, at a later date, you can discuss in greater detail each musical period. One small point - I believe that Grieg was considered to be a composer of the Romantic Period.

I really like your videos, but I think you can't just characterise the harpsichord as a harsh instrument anymore than a steel string guitar or a lute. Harpsichords are basically a string instrument with a keyboard (interestingly, on many electric keyboards these days you can play a steel string guitar, which in some configurations starts resembling a harpsichord sound). Harpsichords offer a brighter more precisely distinguished sounds compared to the more mellow and flowing piano versions of the same pieces. Listening to the same pieces by e.g Bach on the 2 instruments one after the other it's hard to know which one is better. It's just a different perspective and mood, and skilled harpsichord player like Gustav Leonhardt or Trevor Pinock are just as good as Glenn Gould or Sviatoslav Richter in their Bach pieces.
