That Three Cornered Hat is THE reference recording of the work, and is, in my opinion, the greatest recording made of anything, by anyone, at any time. The engineers found a perfect sweet spot in Geneva. That, and the sheer transparency of the orchestral texture cultivated by Ansermet, coupled with the piquant WW sounds and brazen trumpets, and Ansermet’s perfect interpretation (he premiered the work), makes this pretty much a perfect recording.
Absolutely, Jay. Classical was a big part of my growth as a music lover and audiophile. Classical of course features real instruments in a real space and as such, at least in early stereo recordings, can really show you how accurately your system is reproducing the recording. I was able to amass a nice classical collection during the big record sell off of the early 1990's. I'm going to do an in depth review of two new to me ORG titles - Elusive disc is having a sale right now almost half off on certain ORG classical 45's so I picked up three more to review and compare to originals. Should be up in a week or two. Hope you come back and check it out! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad you got something out of them. I wasn't really sure if they would have much of an audience, but they are often still in my most watched videos. I plan on doing some more specific classical videos soon. Glad you found the channel!
I once owned the Morini Brahms and Tchaikovsky on open reel tape. Alas, I sold it. Don’t know why. Should have kept it. Well, I did get a very price on EBay.
I found my first ever Telarc record today, Saint Saens - Symphony Number 3 (Eugene Ormandy) so it seems like they don't show up very often over here. I bought four records from a charity shop (that being one of them) and all for 99 pence each. All of them just needed a minor cleaning and sound great. Hopefully I'll come across some more Telarc ones but I'm not banking on that happening.
I hate to be picky, but I will anyway, LOL. Your videos always show a Shure (Elvis) mic on the left side of the screen. I have to say that the mic is tipped over. It should be turned upright in the manner in which it was used. Now I fully understand that you're probably aware of this, and are showing it that way purely for artistic effect.. In which event, forget that I ever sent you a comment. Love your album reviews and I must say I'm slowly going broke purchasing a lot of your recommendations. LOL. Keep up the great job you're doing. Mark. (Seattle)/
Hi Mark, I'm glad you pointed that out, as I hadn't thought about too much. It's a prop I picked up at a yard sale once and the reason it is angled down is because there is a real mike affixed to it out of view! But now I realize it looks strange lol. I actually have a Yeti mike that I'm going to try out in the next few videos. So the Elvis mike might just appear in the background. The Yeti looks pretty cool as well and should sound much better. I'm glad you are enjoying the channel and appreciate your comments always!
Hey Mark, I think I can abandon the fake mike, as a friend gave me a Yeti mike that while not state of the art, is way better than what I was using. The first use of it is in a video being released tomorrow on the Craft One Step release of Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus. Let me know if you hear improved audio!
