Louise, I'm serious: the idea that a language can be difficult is false on its face, and it requires some explanation to get any idea of why such a notion should be around. Surely part of the explanation must be that teachers an linguists are being self-serving -- as all of us always are -- and telling us that they have done something wonderful, learned a language. A related phenomenon is that one is always reading how *peculiar* Chinese, how odd, how strange, how counter-intuitive. Same deal.
