Hi teachers!
Today, I am going to show you the classroom management system I use in my classroom, The Essential 35, adopted from The Ron Clark Academy. This is my second year using this system and it worked so well for us last year! I know it may seem like an overwhelming amount of rules, but watch the whole video for how it's rolled out and what the purpose is. I genuinely believe that making expectations explicit for students helps them to be successful with behavior.
I hope this helps you! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM on Instagram @hello3rdgrade

I admire your style and flair for education. I’ve been teaching since 2008 and am moving to fourth grade. Thanks for the inspiration!

You are so right! I’m from TN and my fiancé’s family lives in Southern CA, they tease me MERCILESSLY about how I respond with “no sir” “yes ma’am” etc. and calling his parents as “Mr and Mrs (last name)” instead of their first names! So interesting how different the cultures are state-to-state

OMG your intro 😂😂 you pulled a me! i always mess up and say third year too! This is so amazing though. I completely agree with you on explaining what being respectful is and what being responsible means. These are the perfect examples and great life lessons to instill in your students. I probably won't necessarily use these as rules, but more along the lines of examples and expectations that we need to practice. Thank you so so much for making this video Jess! You are AMAZING!

I was taught these rules at an elementary school i went too and they taught us all 55. Like the one for how to properly show you are done eating at a restaurant or the dorito one. I thought learning them was unnecessary because i would not use them all at school or in life at that young, but the way you use them I 100% support. You pick the omes that are actually useful for your students and dont just teach them all even if your students wont use them.

Thank you for making this video, this is so helpful. I agree students need to be taught what each rule looks like specifically.

All of these are class/school procedures that should be followed/demonstrated all year taught the first two weeks of school. These are all in my classroom handbook. I like the signs. I'm glad I found your channel. I'm teaching 3rd for the first time.

I agree with you. Whilst the point of school is academic education, focusing on expectations, rules, processes and procedures for the first two or three weeks of each academic year can make a huge impact on a child's academic education journey for the remainder of the school year.

this is fabulous ! I know for my kids when we have an activity or incentive, the amount of ungratefulness can be so draining. I don’t want to say no games because that’s no fair but sometimes you don’t want to do anything because you know they’re not going to appreciate it. :(

On the TPT, is the pdf only using color backgrounds on the shields? I would like to print these on colored card stock and would like them in black and white. Is that an option?

I'm very interested in learning about this more! Three years ago my class with the other fourth and fifth grade classes tried to start this up, but it ended up being too much..also Covid. You mentioned in this video you would put your essential 35 shields on your TPT account. I just looked and I'm not seeing them. Do you still have those up?

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing about your classroom management system! My school is PBIS too and I love that you incorporated that with this! I wondered - and this might be something that you'll address in your next video about how the "house" system works, but do you have certain ways of recognizing individual student behavior with a point system or do you just give daily praise? I've been using Class Dojo the last few years and I like that I can give individual student reports/points and wondered if having "houses" makes it more difficult to recognize each student individually.
@hellomissromeo
@hellomissromeo 5 лет назад
I use Dojo also! Instead of having each individual student in Dojo, I just have the houses and award the house as a whole!

I love this idea! Do you think this could work in a first grade classroom? (I’m going to be a first year teacher!) Also, I know that you hang up all essential 35 on a bulletin board, but I definitely don’t have the space for that. Do you have any other ideas?
@hellomissromeo
@hellomissromeo 5 лет назад
Yes, absolutely! I think it can work for any grade level :) Hmm what if you put them on cabinets? Or maybe laminated them and put them on a binder ring that you could use to refer to with kids? Or you could put them on a sheet and they could go in a sheet protector in their binder?

Thanks for this awesome video! So inspiring! I just have a quick question. Your information letter to parents, do you explain everything to the students first then send this home for students to sign. Or just send it home at open house and they read over at home then sign.

Thanks so much for the kind words! :) I give it to parents at back to school night and they take it home and go over it with students, then I also use the slideshow to go over it in class with the kiddos. I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page :)

Does anyone know do a British equivalent to this book? It sounds so interesting but it may not fit to British culture or British schools.

'When the Adults Change Everything Changes' by Paul Dix is great for a British context if you haven't already read that one.
