I have learned to never use reading as a "consequence for misbehavior"...it takes the joy out of reading and conditions students to think that reading is a punishment....
@memye288
@memye288 2 года назад
I would be shocked at any teacher that actually did this...🤔

I don’t know any that punish by reading. I have been teaching 38 years too.
@brookevanrhee5135
@brookevanrhee5135 2 года назад
That's why she said "punishment per se" with air quotes when she said it. She's not calling reading a punishment, just that that is what the child will do if s/he chooses to not follow the procedure.

@@brookevanrhee5135 I know what she meant. Punishment is not being used in her comment or my comment. Consequence is. They are sort of a like if you aren’t a teacher. Sorry! I have been teaching 38 years and hold a lot of info in my tiny head on psychology. Punishment is not the same as a consequence. Some may think it is, but it is not.

@@karenkollmer Yeah, I've been teaching 20 years myself. It just sounded a bit critical and like it was focusing on a mispeak rather than on her happiness over her awesome idea she was so proud of.

I’m a veteran Grade 2 teacher. My schedule is like yours with the loooooong breakfast line, late students, etc. In addition, I also have Science first period!! Science is all hands on, meaning no time for Morning Work… I have them do something QUIET in their notebooks to finish from the previous day and glue into science notebook (with a timer to finish so the real listen can begin after the timer) before so I can listen to announcements, take attendance, etc! Teach expectations until students understand how to behave. Word to the wise, mornings are always crazy, but you don’t have to go crazy. You go it!!

I agree! Routines, procedures, and expectations must be taught, practiced, and revisited often!!!

Organization makes everything run easier and smoother, plus keeps the classroom looking orderly. You have lots of great ideas. Love how you’re sharing how you are updating your procedures and materials to make your classroom run more effectively. All the time you’re investing in organizing/creating new materials will definitely pay off in the long run. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Keep up the great work. The ideas you’ve shared are certain to be implemented by other teachers who watch your channel. I didn’t notice a link to an Amazon Classroom Wishlist . . . do you have one?

As the school librarian I had various activities for the kids to do when/if they finished any assignments and choosing books. Of course, they could always read and look at books and magazines. However, I also had coloring type sheets, drawing paper, crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks available. They could also use any computers that were not being used for research by others students (I had 6 in the library at the time, many moons ago). One library was over the principal office and she did not want to hear any noise from the library.

I do the same thing but I call them "quiet bin". I let the students use them in the morning during breakfast, early finisher and indoor recess. bur the expectation is it is independent, they need to use a whisper voice, and they can't walk around with the toy/activity.

Sometimes it is easier to turn off comments. ❤️ I love the cart. I have stem baskets as well. I teach math and science aap. I did this with my lower ele and kids did so well.

This is a great way to do this. I love that it can be set up and done and don't have to be set up each week like centers do! Thank you for linking the resources you found😀😀

I do something similar for my Kinders, but I rotate the boxes in their mailboxes (#1-30), so that no child has the same task each day. It ensures each child will use at least 20-25 of the boxes per month. I just wish I had those boxes. I will look out for them this year at Target or look around to see if I can find better ones than I currently have.
@monicacrocker7653

Maybe you should label each box with a coordinating colored tape, just so that they know where to replace it to. Just until they get to know the system better. Good luck this year!!

I definitely put the corresponding sticker on each box but I think I forgot to show it in the video 😅

Great ideas. Would you say having one for each kid worked ideally? OR Could you see having morning choice bins for 2-3 kids per 1 bin? I have seen it done many ways, such as each kid gets their own bin, 1 bin per 2-3 kids and once there are 3 kids at that bin- that bin station is full, or 1 bin per table (5 kids per table). I am implementing bins this year and am trying to figure out what way I want to do it. I have also seen morning bins done MWF and paper morning work or handwriting practice is done on the other days.. So many options. What are your recommendations?

I like the directions on each box. Maybe on the inside, you could put more specific directions for what "use correctly" means. Explicit and specific directions go far with littles!

Love this! just wondering what the students do with some of the bins though.... like the erasers - what is the activity? or even the counting bears? I teach Grade 3 - I want to incorporate this but will create bins that are age appropriate.

Kids usually sort or make patterns with the erasers and/or counting bears!

Great organization. I will make them too, but won't use them for morning choices as my kiddos have 2 required technology programs daily so I can't spare the time....BUT will have them available for early finishers and Fun Friday! Where can I find those alphabet mazes???

Yes! I absolutely loved these last year and made the morning run so much smoother 😁 For the most part, kids kept them pretty organized through the year minus a few pieces here and there that would be left on the floor. Hope that helps!

I’m late to this video! But where did you get the mazes that you use dry erase markers on?
@inspiringedventures1287
@inspiringedventures1287 Год назад
The mazes are from TPT. They're under the link in my description titled "Fine Motor Activity Cards." If you use them, just be prepared that they will need to be cleaned ever so often depending how much they get used. Just something that I noticed this year! :)

I love the tub idea! I had finished early folders 📂 with fun things to do. SN: The plural of LEGO is LEGO, not legos.
