There are a couple of things I do to manage supplies. During the first week of school I have each student pick a colored pencil pouch (the ones that have the three binder holes). I write their name and student number on the top with sharpie. In each pouch, they have their own personal set of supplies (doesn't include things like rulers or scissors) and they are responsible for grabbing their pencil pouches in the morning. I reward students with extra/cool supplies as the year goes on. Another thing I do is each student in a team has a number 1-5 (depending on the group size). I will call a random number to grab a particular supply. For example, I would say "Number one come grab scissors. Number two come grab enough paper for your group. " I do GLAD in my classroom and I LOVE it! It's quite a bit of prep but so worth it! Anyway, sorry for the long comment but I hope that helps give you ideas!
Maybe hang the pencil pouches on the sides of the desks with the tiny command hooks since they have the three binder holes? And the hooks are so tiny they should be able to stick on the sides of the desks
I save a lot of time/$ by writing student names on the desk with colorful Sharpie paint markers. The name only comes off by writing over it with a dry erase marker. Love your channel.
yayayy so glad you got the house!! and you are getting an aussie right?! heaven!! what camera do you use!!? i am soo jealous of how spacious your room is!
I had the same issues with name tags! Mr. D did an IG story about how he tells the kids at the beginning of the year that the person with the name tag that looks the nicest at the end of the year gets a prize. He doesn't tell them what it is, but gets them something good. I'm going to try that!
When I was in school, my teacher had a pouch attached to the back of our chairs. I’m pretty sure you can just buy shower caddies from the dollar store (the kind you hang over the shower head, or something similar) and attach it to the back of your kids chairs! That way it can be personal for each of your students (:
I find it so fascinating to watch these videos. I work in 8th-10th grade in Norway, and we don't do anywhere near that amount of decorating and organization for our rooms. It looks super adorable though! Also how you all pay for your own stuff is literally mindblowing! Can't wait to follow your vlog from now on. First time watcher today :)
i remember in grade school they would always use clear packing tape for our name tags and then we would move the whole desk😂 but we also had the desks with the storage for our stuff on the side. the name tags always got ripped off and messed up even though they were laminated lol. it might be unavoidable
Great video!! I put a tiny dot of hot glue on the corners of my name tags. They just pop off when I need to change them out. The glue pops right off too. :-)
hi! love your classroom, and totally using it as my inspiration for my first room! I was looking for contact paper like the one you used on your filing cabinet, its so cute! where did you get yours???
Oh wow! Love the color scheme and black desktops. I have to ask... what camera are you using? it’s so clear. it seems like I could reach in and touch any object. Love it! ❤️ hope you have a wonderful year!
There are IB elementary schools?!!?? I did IB in high school and some of my friends said they went to IB middle schools but I had no idea there were elementary schools that did IB too!
Just curious, but what is the point of the name tag? I teaching a middle school and I have over 130 students and I could not have multiple names on a single desk because I would have students upset that a certain so-and-so sat int he same desk but in different periods. Maybe you should just put the table and numberline on each desk and leave the names off. Thanks for sharing.
do the drawer systems come with wheels? I was thinking you could push them against the back wall and mark each drawer system with a number corresponding with each group. then a helper from each table could just roll their group's supplies over when needed
I use those IKea carts for my groups. I also tell the kids who ever has the nicest name tag at the end of the year gets a prize. Jealous that your classroom is almost done. Our building is getting a new Hvac system and we are not allowed in our building until August 8th and school starts Aug. 13.
In one of my classes 2 years ago we had groups of 4 & 5 and to store supplies we put a space in the middle of the two desks that were sideways and put the bins that you want to use in the middle and it worked really well.
have you tried assigning a group leader who will get the materials for everybody and I know it can be difficult but I’ve seen it work a lot it may take a lot of work
My old social studies teacher stacked the blue and green crates you hav won top of each other to put in front of each crate... it ended up working really well!
Idea! The group of 5 with the lonely island (the one you didn’t like in one of your first few videos) you can turn that desk 90 degrees and put the white bin in front of that desk. If that makes sense? So everything looks symmetrical.
Maybe a shoe organizer hung on the side of the grouped desk can be used for the group supplies. Shoe organizers can be cut to size.... which can save $. hope that helps
I love looking at your videos! I really want to know what your tattoo says. Lol I know that’s random but it’s killing me only seeing a portion for a split second.
My kids have a pencil pouch (the ones that can go in three ring binders) and they store in their desks. Stuff like scissors stay in a community bin like your white ones and we get them as needed.
Your a great teacher you organize the whole classroom our school is a massive mess ew I hate it.. I wish I can volunteer to organize the whole classroom I’m going to do it once the summer vacation ends
Maybe put the name tag pocket holders on the back of the chairs, so that when they move seats or need to look at their name tag they can just take it out of the pocket and put it in a new chair
I was a custodian for a middle school and the only name tags that stayed on the desk and that were nice we're the ones that we put on the side of the desk
My mentor teacher during student teaching was a GLAD trainer for our district and I was officially GLAD trained my first year. When I saw your videos for a first time naturally I was confused about the huge groups 😂😂 in my classroom I put the desks all facing in (so two kids are facing the same way on each side of the table groups) and I've noticed it saves space in the classroom and makes it easier to keep kids from touching each other. Being GLAD trained has really changed my life in terms of teaching I feel as a GLAD trained teacher I am better prepared and more effective as a teacher. So excited you had that opportunity :)
I’ve used supply caddies and sets of drawers, and I honestly don’t like any of them for group supplies! In the end, I just scatter like 3/4 caddies around the room and put enough scissors, glue etc in each one, and then kids just go and get what they need and put it back. And the. I have supply tidy as one of my jobs, and two kids go around at the end of the day, pick up anything left lying around, and tidy up the caddies. Works better than anything else I’ve tried!!
I love all your videos! Yeah I’m going into my first year of teaching... do you have any tips on staying healthy/ not getting sick with all the kiddos and germs that go around?
Makaila Hernandez frequent hand washing for yourself and the students is a must! Hand sanitizer in 2-3 places around the room doesn’t hurt. Clorox wipes to clean every student desktop at least once a week. Also plenty of rest, balanced nutrition, exercise, etc. You will lose your voice and you will catch viruses. It’s really a matter of how severe and for how long. Zicam or Airborne are good! I got sick no less than 6 times last year. I think I could have done more to prevent it, though. Best of luck to you!!
I've heard you say IB multiple time through out the vlogs and I was just wondering what that meant? I googled it and all the results seemed to only apply to high schools. Love the series!
I've been enjoying your classroom set-up videos and absolutely love what you've achieved over many days. The smaller desk groupings of 4 and 5 look great.
Yes! That is how I do my name tags, with velcro. I love it. It has worked amazingly. One thing to remember, that I forgot at first, be sure to place the velcro in the same spot on the back of each name tag. This makes changing desks much easier!
I know you hate caddies, however I have two large crates stacked vertically next to a 3 drawer set (like yours). The caddies go in these crates and I have labelled where it goes. So great!
I did the nametag thing with velcro and I had the nametag issue. Then I just decided to make two sets of nametags and I would just give them a new one midyear after they trashed them. Last year, I decided no nametag and you know what? It wasn't the end of the world. I just made sure to update my seating chart.
What camera are you using? I just started a channel and want to vlog my first year... I love this camera quality! Congrats on such an exciting time in your life!!
Pull your desks that are facing each other to be parallel with the front facing desks and put the supply drawers in the center. I used to do this and it worked amazingly!! I wish I had a picture.
Congratulations on the house and the puppy!!! So so happy for you! And I beg you, please come teach my husband how to organize! I've tried and he ignores me, so 50% of our bedroom is chaos and 50% is slightly chaotic, but it's an organized chaos. Lmao!
The storage drawers do not have to be centered in between the two desks ... you can move it over so that your pathway is more spacious. :) also... if you bribe your kids with a candy bar.. or something else ... if their name plates look nice at the end of the year.. they respect the name plate more.
Love your setup. I would suggest separating the desks so that you can put the storage towers between them. That way they aren't taking up walking space.
Maybe for group materials you could use wheeled carts like the blue one you have. Or maybe you could put the drawers you have in a different area and simplify them
I love your videos and something you could do is assign a group leader and have a group chair bag and when you need them to get something out only th group leader can get it out.It saves space on the desk and contains drama and fighting.❤️❤️
