Architect Daniel Libeskind invited Cormier to join his team in a competition to design a Holocaust Memorial in Ottawa. Cormier demurred saying he was a Catholic and wouldn’t be able to bring anything to the project. Libeskind convinced Cormier to participate by saying “you bring the light and I’ll bring the darkness.” The team, which also included photographer Edward Burtynsky, beat out nearly 80 others to win the commission.
