Hi Josh. What a great interpretation of this tune. There are a lot of great claw hammer players out there. You are one of a very few that has a magic connection with the instrument. I am a fairly new claw hammer addict and recently acquired an older Kevin Enoch Tradesman. I installed a John Balch goatskin head and Rickard Dobson tone ring and am very happy with the results. In watching you play I notice that your "claw" has your pointer finger loosely extended. It is hard to tell whether you are using it to strum or if it is "just along for the ride". My right hand looks the same, mostly because my hands are beat up and it is hard to bend that finger. It does seem to help with control/accuracy. I just signed up for your tune/tab of the week and verified the subscription. Can't wait to get started. Kindest regards, Peter
Clawhammer Banjo ive seen where you've written its a version ola belle reed has done. wonder if she penned these lyrics, or if she learned them from someone else?
I've since discovered that the lyrics were originally penned by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z5KaqQak08Y.html
Well Josh, again you have provided another Spectacular arrangement of a classic, I must say if we could get everyone in the world to learn this humanity would know a new level of evolution..!!! lots of subtle work in the first part, thats hard to get on the metal string..I 've been working on this with my homemade tackhead, responds a little better....well I see your plan is to rule the world by banjo....I am in...!!! Thanks again for a great rendition!!! Happy playin cj
Well, thank you CJ - and glad to hear you're in! And yes, I do play things on the gourd a bit differently than I would a modern banjo - there are certain sounds and techniques it's particularly well suited for,
Hey Josh, I think you have a unique way of putting rhythm into a song! I've been watching banjo players and most sound very monothonic. Your manage to put the exact right accent in every single note! I am just a beginner but to me this is remarkable. I imagine what would be like to see you playing Maple Leaf Rag, which is a very "rhythmic" song! Any chance we might see it in some Friday in the near future?
fantastic! i'm learning how to play this from your tab and it's really approachable, but i'm not quite sure what you're playing in the verse, it doesn't appear in the tab. it looks like it's all based around that Gmaj hand shape, but you're doin some fiddly stuff with your middle finger to match the vocal arrangement. curious what the actual arrangement is during the verse, i can't seem to nail it by ear
Exellent Josh, (Im From Argentina), and my english its not good. I have a question ¿That type of strings you use for your BONGJO? In this banjos region are poorly understood , and I liked that sound so particular... thank you very much
Andrada Matias Thanks, Andrada. If you're looking for strings that sound like this, I'd recommend looking at Aquila Nygluts (they're available online from several dealers).
