Many thanks for all the work you put into making these videos. They are all terrific! You make it easy to learn them by ear. I stopped using tab. Instead, I listen to the tune many times (many, many, many,many) times until I get it pounded into my head. I hum or whistle it while doing chores. After the work is finished, I grab my banjo and start figuring out how to play the tune which is now embedded in my head. This is quite easy to do and sometimes, I even discover a new technique or lick.

Thanks, Maria! So that would be a pull-off (an "alternate string pull off" in this case) on the 1st string - the 3 indicates that I usually use my 3rd finger (the ring finger) to execute the pull-off.

Such a fun tune! Question about your banjo- I notice there's a cutout at the base of the fret board and your hand position is higher, playing in the cutout. Is that banjo specifically for a clawhammer style? I am shopping around for a "real" banjo. Any advice would be appreciated

The fretless area is called a "scoop", if you play on the neck instead of the body, you'll have a mellower sound coming from your banjo. It is used for clawhammer to have warmer notes and thus changes the whole essence of a song :)

Thanks! I was shopping for a new banjo when I originally posted. The scoop feature lead me to pine after a Goodtime Americana....has a scooped neck, larger pot and renaissance head. I found a great deal on a standard Goodtime, I had to pass on all the cool clawhammer features :) Still a great banjo though

Michael T So you now have a goodtime banjo ? This is the one I own too, a very good banjo ! If you have a standard (non scooped) banjo, you can still scoop it by yourself or make it scopped by a luthier,you don't have to buy a banjo that already has this feature ! :)

Can you play this style with a resonanator or will that ruin it,been playing guitar for years but new to banjo

+sepultura7771 I've been playing clawhammer on my resonator banjo for years. No problem. It's very loud and sharp sounding though. Open back might be better depending on what sound you want.

Totally serious question here- since you're using your middle finger to strike the strings with, do you allow your fingernail on that finger to grow out somewhat? The reason I ask is that I've been letting mine grow a little, but this morning, playing electric bass in Church, my fingernail caught the strings more than once, making a really ugly sound. Is it possible to use a finger pick turned "backwards" for clawhammer style? Thanks in advance.

+Roger Webb yes, I grow it out so that it’s at least past the flesh of the fingertip. Turning a fingerpick backward can work in a pinch (like when a nail breaks). There are dedicated picks sold for clawhammer as well, like the Fred Kelly “Freedom” pick.
