Clawing GOLD out of the dirt! Gold Claw!

Gold pan review of the Gold Claw Production Pan one of the many production gold pans. In this review I evaluate the speed of the gold pan, the capture rate using the most difficult material I could find. As well as the general ease of use and construction. As with most of the pans in this review series I am a complete novice with this pan, and only going by the manufacturers instructions and other RU-vid videos out there. I did try multiple times with this pan and found the faster I went the more losses I had. Before people get mad at me or insult me, I am going at this as a complete novice with this pan, and my technique will be a complete novice technique. Everyone starts at the beginning, nobody starts as an expert.

OK, before the negative comments that accuse me of "You don't know what you are doing!', or "You are doing it wrong!" I will stress one more time I am a complete novice with these pans, using them for the first time. Going only by the manufacturer's demonstration videos and other RU-vid videos. I have taken what I have learned from watching these and trying to make it fit the situation I have here. Yes I make mistakes. Also I am using the most difficult material I can find for these tests, no chance of 100% recovery from ANY pan. If I wanted Higher recovery rates from every pan I would have got easier material with bigger gold. But I wanted losses so I could emphasize or separate the pans recovery rates more. If they all showed 100% it would not be much of a comparison.

There's a newer video of how to its more about getting everything moving and stratified. You don't want it sloshing from one side to the other. Small quick back and forth motions. I use the regular and love it. I just bounce it back and forth between my hands quickly while tipping it and I have good results. If you get a chance try that out. I'd love to hear what the capture rate was then

Hi Dan, will you be putting the super sluice through the same test? I'd be interested in seeing you detail your production panning technique with the Garrett.
@EdBragg
@EdBragg 4 года назад
To reduce on arm strain, it is meant to be stratified under the water level. Once you gain experience and become comfortable with the pan, you can more rapidly tilt until completely vertical and go much faster. The deep riffles are pretty safe. It is also designed to be used without having to classify. So if you can get close to 80-85% recovery on a full pan every minute, as we all know, it's all about how much material you can process. Thanks for the video Dan!

Think the high loss count is to do with the color Dan. Chris from Vo- Gus tested a pink one, and obtained better results lol!!! Just choking your chain dude, another great unbiased review. Thanks again....

Hey Dan, I have a gold claw and I find that you have to use only the left/right stratifying motion the whole time until the pan is at a vertical angle. Lifting the pan or washing like you do with a normal pan will wash gold out the sides because of the shape of the pan. You have to use a stratifying motion the whole time, slowing down the more vertical your pan gets.

I love my production pan. I too have a prototype production pan. The ease and speed of the production pan is amazing. The gold claw series of pans are absolute game changers. I use mine dry panning to cons in the Arizona Desert and even dry panning it will capture some super fine gold specs. I have all 3 gold claw pans in my Jeep at all times. Great to get through a large quantity of material in a fast manner. Yes the production pan can get heavy but with a little practice, the process is phenomenal. I highly recommend the gold claw pans

Hi Dan, My experience with much finer gold and matrix than you are dealing with has shown that when you tip the pan while shaking the gold travels along the surface of the pan much slower than the blondes flow well above it. You might try to stratify for at least ten seconds, then fairly briskly tip while shaking until about a third of the material is out of the pan, then come back to flat, re stratify and repeat until down to black sand. It works on 500 mesh gold in 30 mesh matrix at about 95% recovery into the black sand in about 3 minutes with 2 lb batches in a 10" pan. The finish is much different though as it uses different physics.

Enjoying the comparison videos. I have standard gold claw, still getting used to it, almost seems counter intuitive to use, but i actually like the small size because of less weight to panning even if it means taking longer to process a bucket of material. Great job on the video production. Thanks.

Hi Dan, I’m a great fan from eastern Canada, I was good friend of Klint, He send me the same printed demo also, It work pretty, but it should be used carefully with different material, the shaking motion and the tilting will change between different material, specially with a black sand loaded pan or supercon, should recess riffle sometime, The great issue about the goldclaw is what klint say by itself « "I initially built the Gold Claw Pan thinking professional or seasoned miners would take to it naturally, and that beginners would struggle as they normally do. I quickly discovered I was wrong. People who have been panning for years have muscle memory, they use traditional swirling and dipping motion without even thinking about it" said Washburn. "For most people that have been panning for a while, their old techniques have become subconscious and they have to unlearn and retrain their brain and muscles to stop swirling and washing and instead to start using the side to side shake and tilt method. I was surprised to find that it’s the newcomers that take right to it"

Great review Dan! With losses of only 19% and using it as a novice for the first time then I would have to believe that once a person honed their technique with this pan that it would be a descent production pan. But that’s just my opinion. I’ve never used a Gold Claw and would probably not purchase one just because I can take a Garret or Minelab pan and typically catch all the gold even with hard to pan material. Round pans are what I started with and they’re very easy to use for me. I started with the Garret pans and after gaining some experience I purchased a Minelab Pro 15” pan and it’s like the perfect pan for me. When I use it it’s a very natural feeling pan just like it’s a part of me. Lol. Just my opinion. Thanks Dan. Take care and stay safe and healthy and gold luck and heavy pans.

Yes the technique caused some loss here. In a few places. Not bad for your first tries. I panned 100 litres of black sand from the beach during lock down. Tested with several pans and the gold claw was the best one by far with near 100 percent capture rate and it was fairly quick by the end. Imagine a pan with 95 percent black sand and the gold was powdered. Very difficult normally but with good technique it got it all enough times that i became confident in it.

Best advice is pretty much forget everything you know about how to use a round pan when using this one. I have seen the manufacturer videos and they are good for understanding how to use them. I mine a lot of clay and dirt for gold. My tests indicate I have to go slower with it than the manufacturer shows. I also finish my cons in a Garret Super Sluice because of the muddy water. If I were stream side, I might finish the cons in the Claw. I am in the northern Sonoran Desert, not too many flowing streams or rivers around here. Final thought is they are great pans. The big production pan will require some good upper body strength even with a small scoop of material due to it's size and having to manipulate it under water. The next size down pan is absolutely great! The jury is still out on the pocket pan.

Well, I clicked on this video cause, I had never seen that type of gold pan. I'm like you I'm used to my regular pan.

DAN, i have never used any sorta pan before just a sliuce , and miller table, so the 2 pans i have 1 is a garrett, wich belongs to my brother and i just got one thats called the best dammed gold pan, all the stuff i run is sifted down to 1/8th. in. thats cause the gold is almost fly poop in size, no matter if it comes from the beach or comes from creeks, so i am a novice when it comes to using pans,, thank you for the videos,, be safe, be strong, be free, be blessed

Wow this one looks amazing! The tilting/shaking motion makes me a little nervous though. Also the ~80% capture rate is not bad considering you plowed through a half bucket it 5 minutes.

No, i think that capture was relatively OK considering what it is trying to pan and how fast.

Hi Dan, another good video. I would love the see the Fraser River in person some day. It looks truly amazing. I wonder if they extended the riffles around the sides more if it would help the capture rate. It seems to me that sloshing side to side might be sending some gold over those edges, just a thought.

It does seem to be hard for the pro Paners to get used to the idea of the gold claws motions and techniques but for you all is forgiven thanks for sharing love the videos and glad you have a website I'm a avid dirt buyer and it's really cool getting something that I might have watched you gather Have a great day and prospect on

Although a nice looking pan. It would be too heavy for me too. As for the loss of the gold that is why a safety basin is a great idea in case you lose some. Thank you for sharing. Dan I hope you and your family and friends are staying safe and healthy. ;)

When I keep the most of the pan under the water the whole time made the difference for me it took a few times to get the feel. I wanted to swirl, now it seems I can’t swirl good anymore and choose the claws first now.
