Do you want to know which gold pan to buy, or what is the best gold pan out there? Well, let me show you. In this series I will review, test and evaluate the major production pans out there. I test, the Pyramid Pan Pro, the Gold Hog Flow Pan, the Gold Claw production Pan, the Garrett Super Sluice, a Flat Pan and a Batea Pan. In this first video I introduce all the pans and use them one with no evaluation or opinions, each other video in the series I take one of the pans and dig deeper with it. Catching it tailings, timing it, and giving feadback on it's general use price and ease. _______________

@@DanhurdHave you used a pan with a second set of riffles, and what are your thoughts on them if you have?
@marclopez4249
@marclopez4249 4 года назад
Hey Dan u used the Gold Claw wrong. Your supposed to tip the material to a vertical position while stratifying at the same time towards the large long riffles all while keeping the entire pan submerged under water. Then after your vertical u lay it flat while still submerged and turn the pan to the finishing side and again stratify to a vertical position again then pull the pan straight out letting all the water drain out then that flap the sticks out, level it off then HIT the edge of the pan with your palm and JUST THE GOLD will jump out to the middle of the pan. You should be able to pan a full pan in about 30 seconds literally catching all the gold in the pan if done correctly. I have the pan and it works amazingly even catching powder gold. U might want to ask the company to send u an instructional video on how to use cause it’s totally different then normal way of panning with the Garrett gold pan. I think u might like a lot once u get the hang of it. I know I have. Thanks for the vid u have the best gold panning vids on RU-vid!!

It's very interesting to see the little innovations of each product. I'm glad that you give them all a fair chance. Some people are drawn to counter intuitiveness and can't stop trying to make a better mousetrap. I kinda like to stick to what I know, but it is interesting to see how all these pans work. I got a Garrett starter pack so it came with all kinds of goodies including the green classifier, super sluice, backpack pan and my personal favourite pan the “Gold Trap”. It’s smaller than the super sluice but I find it has 2 big advantages. 1: I personally tire quickly with the super sluice so I find the gold trap more manageable, it still holds a big shovel full, but I can pan for hours. 2: the base is offset so once you get to half a pan you can grip it much easier. Just my own 2 cents. Great video as always!

Thanks for this production pan series. When I saw the guys who make the Gold Claw pans demonstrate then, it was interesting that the pan is just held under water and shook side to side. Once everything is moving, a slight tipping starts. I had never seen underwater panning before. I tried it at a gold show. I have only seen the videos for the Pyramid Pro pan. A bucket is what they used as a pan holder. Again, this is an underwater pan. They moved it side to side so the material sloshed against the aluminum riffles. The lights flowed out the handle sides. Once the material was reduced to just cover the drain, the next shovel of new material was thrown in. I got one to use in Vermont and it is a fast way to get lots of black sands to finish at home.

Gold claw is an awesome pan but it needs a tweak. Problem is once you get a gold flake in one of the riffles, you cant get it back in your pan unless you have deep water. Wouldnt take much to fix it. I hope they addressed this n their big version. They have never gotten back to any of my comments so i will keep telling people.

At least MO has some decent geological diversity in its minerals. Being in KS we have salt, limestone, quartz, and dolomite (just limestone with magnesium in it). That is pretty much it. All of our "notable" minerals are just different types of quartz with different impurities. No chance of finding any gold here.

Thanks for doing this series Dan, it's an excellent idea, and I'll be watching. For the Pyramid Pro Pan you'll need deeper water and room to move to give it a fair critique - as that would be normal usage (not a tub). For me and the people I know who use it the PPP is one of the fastest, most efficient and most ergonomic pans on the market. It excels in areas where sluicing or highbanking is not permitted. Sure, you need to pan down the bottom concentrates, but that would be the case in any pan where you're panning down to concentrates and shovelling more in without sucking up the gold in a snuffer bottle. As with any pan people need to see the tool in proper usage, and RU-vid videos, as great as they are, don't always do that. Personally, I like to overload the PPP with material and then knead it with my hands while removing the biggest rocks. After that, stratify lightly to make sure nothing gets lost out the sides. At that point I have a lot of material in the PPP, and then you just alternatve between vigorous shaking side to side to stratify to lift out the lights. I've caught plenty of fine gold in my PPP so I'm confident in the recovery rate. If you're in an area with a lot of black sand or clay it's a good idea to pause mid-pan and stir the bottom of the trap to ensure all gold is all the way at the bottom (I do that with an aluminum tent peg). The main weaknesses of the PPP are its shape (hard to fit into a large hiking backpack, so you have to strap it to the back or carry it), and some might argue it's recovery rate is weaker in an area with super heavy black sands. Again, just stir the bottom of the trap with a thin camping peg to minimize that problem. On another note - curious to see how the Batea Pan (aka the Right pan) stacks up against the others as it seemed to go from raw material to mostly clean gold really quickly, and on the Fraser getting rid of black sand with the fine gold is a big problem. I appreciate you taking the time to source these pans and share your experiences with them. PS - I'm not affiliated in any way with the manufacturers of the Pyramid Pro Pan, just a customer.

I'm sure the fossicker is already on you about needing the 1/2 &1/4 material in the pyramid pro to keep that material from locking up. I picked up a couple of his pans from him for a trip up on Fraser. I just ran and ran material maybe 2 cleanouts an hour. Straight into the bucket and loaded next pan in 10 seconds. Elbows on knees wading is best ergonomically. I moved way more dirt than I have ever with a Garrett 3x. Put in some bigger rocks to keep that pan fluid. That hog needs some squeeze spring loaded baffles to run full at first. @goldhog twist handles and they rotate closed. Fossicker is real deal, gold mad scientist. If you ever have an idea he has seen it already my guess. I also want to say the handles on the pyramid pro are very comfortable and give great leverage, you can really tear it up. imagine a pair of those on your favorite saddle. Running the pan almost fully submerged takes almost all the weight off. Side to side with lots of splash

A great video, I love Dan & his shows. In saying that, I've been using the Pyramid Pro Pan for over 10 years now & I'm disappointed that Dan didn't watch Dennis Katz's (The inventor) video on how to use it. For starters, keep the pan flat & just under the water. Don't tip it sideways, the stainless steel slats along the side of the pan are only there to break up the clay/soil. After the initial wetting of the soil, stratisfy the contents with a vigorous left & right movement using short strokes. After about 20 seconds or so, increase the length of the strokes & this will clear a lot of the top concentrates. Restratisfy for another 20 - 30 seconds. Increase the strokes to clear the rubbish. WHEN you are approaching the BULB part of the pan, vigorously swing & twist the pan in a circular fashion & any Gold will sink to the collection chamber below. I suggest cleaning out the pan after every 5 - 10 fillings because if you are like me, you can trip over a rock in the river, drop the pan & lose your Gold. Yes, I have tried all the other pans except the flat on. The Pyramid Pro Pan is my favourite by far. Remember, it is NOT a finishing pan. At the end of the session, you still have to empty the contents of the collection chamber into a NORMAL Gold pan & pan it out. (about 1/2 a cup) You do NOT have to classify the concentrates BEFORE putting them into the PPP. I hope this helps & Dan, keep up the good work - we love it.

Hey Dan. You're the reason I'm getting into gold panning. I would like your opinion about the use of pans over the long hours of a work day. It would seem to me that the garret pan would be a better choice for a long day of work. Tell me if you think I'm wrong but I think you can sit with a garret, control your posture (more) and stratify with short shakes. Now the big flat blue pan or the batea?(the right pan) seem to be faster given a learned technique but I suspect that after hours of panning the faster pans with the larger circle motions will be working YOU instead of you working the pans. I would think being bent over the water panning all day would be tiring vs the sitting short motion agitation look of the garret style.

What I’m seeing here Dan, is the fancy pans need another pan to get your fines out. The Garret is a winner for me. Out of all the men in the early days, I’m sure there were some thinkers in that group, but the good old round pan is the one that made it to our generation. Go round and dig the ground I say. Cheers from Mario Australia.

Garrett over all. Of course some can do other things but over all the Garrett is first choice and obviously yours too lol you're always using the Garrett . Great vid as always Dan thanks. And also with the gold hog I think in the states it would work better just for the simple fact we can dig in the water and put wet material in the pan which would settle faster then dry material. I guess you could just wet the material first lol

My favorite pan design is the Estwing. It has the same style of riffles as that flat pan and it has a row of tiny riffles for doing cleanup. They are really cheap, too. Most of mine are black, but I do have one blue pan. The black has good contrast to the gold, but soaks up a lot of light, making it harder to see what is going on in it. I have yet to use my blue pan, but i can already tell it will be a brighter pan to work with. I also like my Garret Supersluice quite a bit. The green color has really good contrast to the gold and it is brighter than my black pans. The Garret is thicker and tougher, so I like carrying it on my wheeler. If i’m keeping a lighter load on a hike I will bring my Estwing. My biggest complaint about the Garret is the riffle design. They are too big and hold larger rocks in them. The riffles on my Estwing are plenty large enough to hold any gold I will find in my pan and larger rocks will roll over the tops of them.

Dan their are so many different pans out there you could do this for a month. I don’t have gold around me but I might get one to look for lead pellets just for the fun of it. Always good to get out doors

Hey Dan :) A Cool test would be if you put a known amount of old in a dirt sample and then panned that same amount from each pan. :)

Each new “pan” can be used for certain conditions; black sand, rough river bottom rock, sticky clay, and broken conglomerate. Most cases the material should be classified to exact same conditions for better results. 👍
