In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I present my thesis that 2011-2017 was prime Clayton Kershaw. Prime Kershaw was certainly a sight to behold, and he compare him to other pitchers like prime Pedro Martinez. For my money, 2014 Clayton Kershaw was one of the greatest seasons ever.
I also talk about his slider. That nasty Clayton Kershaw slider really opened the floodgates for years of dominance.
We also talk about the best pitcher's of the 2010s -- namely Kershaw, Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Chris Sale. We compare the last three to peak Clayton Kershaw.
You'd think with a Clayton Kershaw MVP and three Clayton Kershaw Cy Young seasons that there'd be nothing left to play for in his career, but we're far from it. We have seen Clayton Kershaw playoffs struggles time and time again, so he'll have an incomplete legacy until he can circumvent his Clayton Kershaw playoff struggles and Clayton Kershaw playoff chokes. Will the Clayton Kershaw Dodgers get it done in 2019? We'll have to wait and find out.

He passed Koufax in strikeouts tonight and it brought a lot of haters out to cut him down. It's crazy to see people dismiss Kershaw, his career and accomplishments just because he hasn't won a ring yet. He still has a few years left and the Dodgers are set up to be contenders for all of them. He'll get his ring and maybe another to match. Hall of Fame is a lock and maybe even on the first ballot. Not every legend won it all in their first try. Roger Clemens went 13 years between postseason wins, then turned around and won back to back World Series.

I discount Koufax's career. He played 12 years, first 6 he was a bum. Only thing of note he did in that time was lead the NL in losses and wild pitches once each. Then he had 1 mediocre season with like 18 wins and a good amount of K's but also an ERA of like 3.90 os some shit. Then he went pitched like a legend for 5 years. Then he fucking retires at 30. I don't even think he belongs in the HOF. There's tons of other guys who had 5 or 6 amazing years then they had to quit cuz of an injury or their ability fell off and they've never been or won't ever be considered for the HOF.
@jamesanthony5681
@jamesanthony5681 2 года назад
@@unkledoda420 He certainly belongs in Cooperstown. Those 5, 6 years were as dominant as any pitcher in history, leading the NL in ERA for 5 straight years, WHIP under 1.0 (average), pitching all those complete games, winning 3 Cy's when baseball awarded only 1 per season (until 1967). Leo Durocher said if he had his choice of just 1 pitcher to win 1 important game, it'd be Koufax. Casey Stengel, who saw them all up to 1975, said Koufax was the best he's seen. Pete Rose batted .175 lifetime (1963-66) against Sandy. Name a pitcher who had *THAT* kind of dominance, and accomplishments (stats) who is not in Cooperstown? He retired because of an arthritic elbow that doctors said if worsened could result in loss of arm. Watching him pitch from the center field camera, you can see why he had that injury.

I am a big Kershaw fan, but I'd point out that stats like WHIP probably have a chance to improve if you know in advance that you aren't going to be asked to throw 110 pitches or go deep into games. Managers pull you from games quicker, but there's probably also expectation that you perform better on a per-inning basis than you would've if you were expected to go eight or nine innings. Combine that with the all-or-nothing approach at the plate and the defensive shifting, and I think WHIP numbers these days should be pretty low. You might not give up fewer runs, but you're not giving up as many hits.

Would love at some point a video on Walter Johnson, the (at least to me) best pitcher of all time. There'd be little video, but his numbers, even though they came mostly in the dead-ball era, are insane, especially the strikeout numbers. He was striking out 2-300 a year in an era when hitters would do ANYTHING not to strike out, even preferring a double play at times. His 3509 strikeouts was considered untouchable until Bob Gibson hit 3000 50 years later, and wasn't broken until the '80s. Another idea is Dazzy Vance, the pitcher who, due to injuries, didn't win a SINGLE GAME until he was 31, then won so many (197) he's enshrined in the hall of fame. Truly one of the most miraculous, and sadly forgotten careers ever. I'd honestly almost prefer a video on him than Walter Johnson. I could give about a million ideas for videos, but I'll leave it at those two, for now, because frankly, this comment is too long. Either way, good luck on whatever your next video is!

As a Dodger fan, I'm gonna be really mad if the Dodgers don't help him get a ring this year. This is arguably our best roster yet to support Kershaw (yes, better than 2017). I just hope our bullpen won't screw us over and Kershaw can limit the homers in the playoffs

Kershaw once threw a perfect game where he stuck out every batter and hit a home run for the only run of the game in highschool. He and his catcher were the only one's needed to be present in order to get that win. Let that sink in...

uh...I doubt the runner-less game was without some defensive plays from his fielders...surely some outs were from balls put into play and not all strikeouts...? Still awesome.

@@nandy9285 Hey thanks for the extra info and the link. What a dominant performance. Didn't mean to sound combative or untrusting so much as astonished and nevertheless doubtful. I was thinking that I'd never heard of anyone getting 27Ks in a game -- and indeed I haven't; in this case, the high school league had a mercy rule, so he only had to pitch 5 perfect innings before the game was called, because his team was up by 10+ points. Still an impressive game, but worth noting -- if not for his teammates contributing some of those runs to end the game early, Kershaw would have had to dole out 12 more K's (or contribute quite a few more runs between himself and the catcher) before we can truly say that it could have just been the two of them winning the game. Might be different for high school, but the Official MLB definition of a perfect game requires nine innings pitched: mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/about_mlb/rules_regulations.jsp

Two different types of pitchers. One an overwhelming power pitcher and the other is a highly intelligent crafty pitcher. Neither style is better than the other, it's just a matter of how well a pitcher executes that style.
