Only to see what I should open first (like yoghurts) but I never throw something out just because it's past the date. Just sniff and look (and taste if you're brave, or have your partner taste ;))

The golden rule for cleaning of anything is: put a detergent, clean firmly with a sponge and then rinse with water! Scouring cream for all kinds of bathroom items except wc and floor, universal liquid detergent for toilets and floors, and dish detergent for everything in a kitchen! Pay attention to sponges and cleaning clothes: v.i.l.e.d.a is the best! If you have a chance, buy a quality steamer, it makes everything quicker and easier!

I take a picture of my fridge interior before I take the shelves out. That way I will put them in the same slots when I reinstall them.

If you're short on counter space or time you don't have to empty out the whole fridge at once. You can start from the top shelf, remove the food on that shelf and that shelf, clean and dry it, replace it. Then continue down :)

We lived in a developing country for a few years, if you stick by the expiration date when shopping there then your trolley would be empty at the check-out. Even with the food being fresh, the tropical heat can destroy it quickly. I learnt quickly how to choose and store items for safe consumption differently to what I did before. I learnt how to make more items from basic ingredients rather than relying on imported, costly products. When we returned home to our nation, I knew how to gauge those clearance items and still make a lot of my own food products today. We have saved heaps on groceries over the years and have very little food wastage, all thanks to living by the skills that we learnt internationally.

My dh of 42+ years is a veterinarian. His career started out in the USArmy, and one job of the vets were food inspection. He learned all the rules, as well as all the tricks of all the places he had to inspect in the US and in Europe. We do NOT keep anything past dates, and he knows just how long any leftovers are safe... etc. BTW I loved this video, nice to see how to clean the fridge like a PRO, much better than my past efforts! Thanks once again!

It depends on what type of foods it is. If it is eggs or milk, I'll just do the "egg test" or smell the milk. I don't like letting my food go that long though. I try to eat out prepare things before they go bad. The biggest thing that has helped me with this, is before I go grocery shopping or meal crab, is I'll double check everything that is in my refrigerator and pantry, shop from home first, then make my meal prep, before I will bring new groceries into my house. This is been the best thing that has worked for me. If not, I just bring new groceries in and throw so much away. 😉

Great tips! Thanks for the videos! It takes me so long, I'm not a fan of doing the entire fridge at once. Start with the doors, and put stuff back in. Then, remove items from top shelves and additional shelves as it makes sense. Then, you can keep the fridge doors closed and cold food while you work on shelves & baskets. Sure, it's easier to do the deep clean when the fridge is at room temp. But, who has time for that? As maintenance, cleaning a different portion each week, works for me.

This is exactly how I clean my fridge, also after cleaning the shelves, I placed a layer of paper towel and then non slippery shelf liners on top. I also take out the bottom metal vent that accumulates lots of dust and nasty dirt and hose it down, then let it dry before putting it on again. :)

I use a sheet of Glad Press n Seal on each shelf and to line the crisper drawers. It’s so easy to just remove, do a quick wipe and replace with a new sheet. Easy cleanup of spills too! I also use Press N Seal on my vanity.

Thanks I just got motivated to clean my fridge .as I hate doing it . -My quick tip is to use vinegar in a bottle to do quick clean ups and don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals - do one shelf at a time as it gets overwhelming - I had a sink with hot water and dish soap and vinegar with a tooth brush handy with a sponge - dry each drawer with a towel and load in and then move to the next drawer or shelf - wear something that can get wet and you can change out of

Great video.. My tip for the bin inside the door Is to line it with a half sheet of paper towel topped with wax paper. If oil gets on it, the liner can be replaced without having to soak the bins.

I use some things past the best by date all the time, depending on what it is. But I always check to be sure it doesn't smell bad or look weird. I've never gotten sick from anything.

I clean my fridge the same way except in sections. I have a large fridge, very similar in style to yours, it's always full and don't have the counter space to set everything out. Also, I may get sidetracked with something (as a single mom of 3 this happens a lot) and this way I don't have an entire fridge full of food to contend with sitting out on my counters and table. I can stop and make a snack or meal or take care of minor emergencies (3 kids, always something) and then resume when I'm able. Sometimes that's not til the next day. So I start with the doors, empty one, clean all components, refill, then the other door, then the top shelf (always work top down), then the next, etc. I close the doors in between while cleaning components that I removed and the containers of food I'm keeping or while sorting and discarding old stuff, which is more energy efficient than having the doors stay wide open for a couple of hours. I use old washcloths and vinegar, baking soda, warm water, and elbow grease, and a dry towel to quickly dry all parts of the fridge quickly before putting things back in. I like this method (I think I got it from someone on RU-vid) because it's less daunting since I know that it's low commitment and I don't have to spend all afternoon on the fridge if I don't want to. However, I almost always finish it in one day because I'm one of those 'gotta get it done once I've started' kind of people. Getting started is half the battle.

I always pay attention to "best before" dates on food and/or drinks. My mother thought it was okay to use expired food, but I don't take chances with any type of food. I'm a real stickler for watching dates.

Manufacturers set those expiration date! There are only a few things that require dates by law. And yes I push it. Meat is the exception... I don't want to die from being cheap 😂 I also wipe out my fridge Everytime I get groceries and every 6 months pull out the drawers. My fridge is the cleanest thing in my house, no joke!

Almost everything in my fridge is in shallow baskets from the dollarama... I got ones that fit 2 side by side on a shelf... it makes it so easy to keep clean, nothing gets lost in the back, it’s so easy to divide things into categories ie: salad dressings are all in one, hamburger/hotdog/BBQ toppings in another, and drinks in another... they catch spills and are way easier to clean than the shelves themselves which now only need a quick wipe without taking the fridge all apart... in the bottom on the drawers I put a folded microfibre cloth... again, great for spills and containing bits and such... easy to wash and put back if they get icky.............. seriously I may not have my shit together elsewhere, but my fridge I’m proud of lol

I’ve gotten food poisoning too many times to push expiration dates. I always follow the best by dates and if it’s past the date on the packaging, it goes in the trash. Regardless of what it is. Love your videos!

One extra tip is to place kitchen roll sheets in the bottom of the crisper drawer so if you store some foods in there (eg onions) any crumbs, drips or whatever will just go onto the kitchen paper rather than the actual drawer. Is there any chance you could do a "freezer" cleaning video? Thanks!

I clean for re-use the meat trays from purchase to store fresh meat/poultry at the BOTTOM of the fridge to contain drippings. These must be low so that any spills will not contaminate other products underneath.

I am a professional cleaner...this very close to how I do my fridge as well. I take the framing for the drawers out as well. I personally use a dish brush at my sink to get into crevices. I really like the idea of using a cleaning toothbrush though!

It depends on the item and how far past the date it is, but for most stuff I will try a small bit if it is past the date. Somethings go in the trash if with no thought if it past it's date.

Yes, emptying the whole fridge is a must!! It's amazing how much you miss when you don't do this. I get place mats and cut them out and put them on the glass and in the baskets, it makes it so much easier to clean everything! If you own your fridge you can use contact paper as well. 😉 It also gives a design to your fridge.

as long as it looks good, smells ok, and doesn't taste funky I eat it. With meat I won't go more than a couple days past the date though. I buy just what we need each week, so the meat usually gets used up before the date and anything bought in bulk gets divided and put straight into the freezer. As for leftover meat that's been cooked, unless I plan on using it the next day it goes straight into the freezer with a lable that says what it is, what meal I plan on using it in, and the date I cooked it.

I have a garbage can handy and throw away all expired or non favorite foods away as I empty and wipe contents. I usually start on the top and work shelf to shelf leaving all good food still in refrigerator. I get pretty grossed out when I see cold items sitting out. A milkman said if you shake milk and it bubbles it’s still good. But I still use my nose

How often do you do this deep clean? The bits I can never get clean is the gunk that collects under the rubber edges on the side of the glass shelves which don't slide off.

I am pretty much the same way you are. If it looks and smells good and it's only a day or two past the expiration date then I will go ahead and eat it. But if it's chicken, pork or beef, unless it's frozen, I won't use past the expiration date.
