Clean, Lube & Repair Shimano Integrated Brake Shifters (Brifters)

I show how to fix most STI type road bike shifters that are not working by simply cleaning and lubricating them. You don't even need to take them apart. Most times it's just old grease that doesn't let the pawls move freely. There are usually not broken parts. These are Shimano ST-6400 shifters (Shimano 600/Ultegra). STI stands for Shimano Total Integration.

I restore vintage bikes. Non-shifting STI shifters from the 90s is very common because, as shown here, the old lube has dirt build up and gummed up from many many years. IMPORTANT: Patience is key. Usually doesn't clear up instantly . WD40 is a great degreaser, but takes some time to break down gummed up dirty grease. Shoot tons of WD40 in there and let it sit for 20-30min and if doesn't work shoot more and let sit for day or two and shoot more in there to clean out. Works every time. It is not necessary to use PBblaster or similar which is too strong and can be damaging to some materials (plastics) and surfaces.

proper methods, well explained, not too rambly. you're doing it right! i love using motorcycle chain lubricant spray after solvent-cleaning mechanics, and on my bicycle drive train. it's a super runny naphta-like solvent that spreads like crazy over any surface, leaving a very thin and superbly long lasting conserving film of semi dry fat, that runs as smoothly as thin oil. it smells a bit, but who cares, it's cheap and works incredibly well! i use it on anything from mechanical typewriters to creaking doors

Just finished cleaning both my Dura Ace 10 speed 7800 shifters. Both failed after about 5 years. Used liquid wrench as degreaser, ran under hot water , the. Rinsed with rubbing alcohol to displace water and used compressed air it blow out and let dry. Ran to bike shop, purchased tri- flow and both shifters operating like new. (Did have to disasemble one, and watched your video on this to)Thanks... Great video and tips . Going to buy all new brake and shift cables now...

Excellent video, thanks. My shifter just started to act up a few days ago, not shifting down. Some liberal sprayings of WD40 lead to much black gunk running out, and eventually the shifter seemed to loosen right up. So far so good.

A friend had a cable break on a century ride. I was able to tie off the cable and she got home. The Ultegra shifter mechanism seemed all messed up when i tried to replace the cable and was wishing she had a Campy, which i've rebuilt. Please wear latex or neoprene gloves when handling wd-40, lubricants, and rubbing alcohol. All of these will have some kind of penetration into your skin and blood stream. Even if it is a trace, but especially if you have a cut or scrape.

I can't get the damn cable out! I tried WD-40 to get the gear catching which help them back to life, great. But this cable is still stuck. Using STI RX100 right shifter. Any tips apart from disassemble??? THX
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 5 лет назад
I am assuming it's a brifter like in the video. The cable needs to be lined up with the exit hole to come out. To line up the hole, press the small lever repeatedly. The cable should push out through the hole. If the shifter isn't shifting, follow this video. If the cable is lined with the hole and not coming out, you may need to spin it a little and push it. If the cable head is stuck, push it from the back side with a fine point dental tool.

I've read before that WD-40 can actually gum up over time if it's used as a lubricant. I should buy a can of Tri-Flow, reading about it I think it'd definitely be useful to me. I actually got myself my first tube of Super Lube because I've seen you use it so often, I'll start using that instead of just regular grease when I service my tools.

@jetjazz05

shyflirt1 I haven't either, but I try to avoid it if I can anyways since it's not technically a lubricant. That's why I'd like to get the Tri-Flow, for times when I need an aerosol spray to lubricate something I can't take apart easily.

WD-40 itself doesn't gum up but if you miss use it to say "lubricate" your chain it actually attracts dirt which can then gum things up;-)

@204514602

So it changes 3 gears at once with a full swipe of the shifter. You can swipe the shifter less and I can make it only change 1 gear. But if I push the shifter further, it changes a 2nd and even further it changes a 3rd gear. So one full swipe = 3 gear changes. Any ideas why?

No, no secret source. Just keep watching ebay and see if some show up.

I think 105 & 6500 Hoods will fit the 5500.... don't know for sure, but maybe someone at Shimano can confirm... just a thought

Hey, 105 is the overall group "family name" 6500/01/R600 also fit, but that does not make it easier to find unfortunately.

Pb blaster works even faster, if you happen to already have some

I have it and other stuff. I just want to dissolve the grease and not hurt the plastics. WD-40 works well enough.

I have tried to use this method on a shimano rx 100 shifter that didn't Work properly. Now it sheem like it is shifter up 2 gears instead of one. Do you know how i can fix this problem?

Flush it out more. There is a pawl that helps limit how much it goes up. But I think some STI shifters allow you to shift up two at a time depending on how far you push it.

shyflirt1 Actually, my Dura Ace 7400's shift three at a time. It might be the case that the pawl has broken, depending upon whether the shifter shifts up or down too much..

Might still be stuck pawls. There are multiple pawls in there. Pawls that shift it up, and pawls that limit how far it shifts.

shyflirt1 True. I rebuilt mine and needed a new pawl, but after that experience, I'd agree with your philosophy: always best to use a can of degreaser and lubricant cleaning it out rather than attempt a rebuild. Not worth the tears or the callouses.

It's different for different shifters. I don't know what kind of shifters you have.

Can't hurt to try. Sometimes the shifters are actually broken. But more often than not, they are just dirty and clogged up with old grease.

imanol arias Let me know how it turns out. Keep in mind that if they are really gunked up, it can take quite a bit of dregreaser/wd40 to get the pawls freed up. I have come close to giving up on one shifter when it started working. But then sometimes the shifter actually do break. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xKNYgHuxBQ4.html
